Selling a Gas dryer....what Should Be My Asking Price??

My husband and I have decided to buy a stacking front loading washer and dryer. With another baby on the way, we could use the extra space that our side-by-side unit was taking up. We discarded the washing machine as it broke down but the dryer is still in very good working condition. I am planning to put up a notice at my local grocery store to sell it. It's a Maytag gas dryer, no rust, works great, oversize capacity plus. It's only 5 1/2 years old.

My question is: What do you think is fair asking price? I need the money and I need it gone. It's in my living room!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your input! So greatly appreciated! I'll show your wonderful responses to my husband tonight so we can type up something to get this thing out of our living room.

***just a side note, it is a Maytag and we purchased it new at Sears in Feb. 2005 and we paid $586.49. I will "ask" for more so there is room to negotiate. Thanks again for your help.

depends on the brand. What did you buy it for? I would say you should expect to get 1/3 to 1/2 of the original price. so if it was originally $500.00 then you should expect to get paid anywhere from $165-$250. However that should NOT be the asking price. If you want $250, then ask for $275. People will negociate the price.
Dont forget to put that puppy on Craigslist. Appliances and work out equipment sell like crazy off there. I bought alot of my replacement appliances from C/L because I know I wont be in my house for more than another year and didnt want to spend a brand new price but didnt want JUNK for cheap either.

Definitely check Craigslist before deciding on a price. And then post on Craigslist as well with a picture. YOu never know how far someone might drive to get a pre-owned appliance.

I just looked and similar items in our area here in Western PA are going for $150-$175.

Scan your local classified ads to see what people are asking. You could also take into consideration what you paid or what a model with the same features sells for today would be a good place to start as well.

I'm just wondering if a dryer will be harder to sell since they seem to far outlast washers so not too many people may be looking for just a dryer. Hopefully that won't be the case!
