Anything brand with Energy Star approval...it will cost a little more, but it will save a fortune in utility bills
Hi Moms,
I am moving to a new house and need to buy a lot of new appliances. I need a new washer/dryer, refrigerator, stove and microwave. Can anyone give me advice on best brands to buy and the ones to stay away from.
Thanks a million!!
M.

Hi M.. My husband and i are big fans of anything Kenmore. You can buy Kenmore at Sears or now some Big Kmarts (I think). My husbands father has worked for Sears for 38 years so he grew up with the brand. They never let them down, and always lasted. We buy the Kenmore products that are most popular with the Sears employees. Just ask the salesperson what is the most popular W/D with employees, etc. (we go to Sears at Charlestowne mall or Sears on Randall in Batavia for smaller stuff). Then you know you are buying a reliable product and one that even the employees like. Good luck!
If you're planning on buy a bunch of new appliances, M. is Maytag month at Home Depot so you'll get some great promotions. They'll give you up to $400 visa rewards card for buying 4 appliances in addition to home depot gift cards, depending on the purchase price of your appliances. I myself have LG front loading w/d but they vibrate too much and are NOT recommended for 2nd floors and I myself don't recommend them since they really shake my house... Maytag Epics are identical to the Whirlpool duets, just a different brand name stamped on them. You'll get a great deal at Home depot.
I would consider buying at Costco. The prices are inline with those of other retailers but they offer an unconditional return system. When our dryer had a heating element issue several years back, they were happy to accept the return a year after the purchase and refund us in full. At the time, we were able to upgrade to a nicer dryer. We have moved since and bought our new Whirlpool Duet system at Costco and are extremely happy. It M. be worth a look!
Go to ABT. They have very knowledgeable sales people and will give you a great price on things - usually better than the sticker price once you sit down with them to go over what you want to purchase. We bought KitchenAid appliances and they seem to be working fine.
GO TO ABT !!!! They are WONDERFUL!
Hi, M. ~ We subscribe to Consumer Reports and recently had to buy a new washer which was just delivered last week. We had a Maytag Neptune and we recently found out that they were involved in a class action lawsuit because of all the problems. We only had ours 7 years and had to have the motherboard replaced and it just went out again so instead of putting out another $300 for a new board we bought a new washer. A recent Consumer Reports said that Whirlpool and Kenmore are good brands for washers. We went with the Whirlpool Duet and so far I really like it a lot. We also bought a new refrigerator a couple of months ago and again my husband researched it online and read Consumer Reports and found that everyone pretty much said that Amana is the best for refrigerators. Again, we've been very happy with our refrigerator so far. Hope this helps!

We have always had good luck with Kenmore (knock on wood).
I think a great way to start is to check Consumer Reports. You can check online and obtain a more detailed analysis via a subscription. Or pick up a copy. It's also helpful to check them out in the stores and then do some comparison shopping online as well as find consumer reviews. Good luck.
Stay away from GRANTS!!! My mom had the worst experience with them. They delivered a broken microwave (like one side had a huge den in it) it took them forever to get her a new one and that one was damaged too. My mom wanted her money back and they wouldn't give her money back, she had to get the general attorney involved and that's only when they replied. (but took out a $135 restocking fee). We were very disappointed. Also their serivce is horrible, takes forever to get someone out.
ABT is great!
I would stay away from KitchenAid dishwashers. We redid our kitchen too and bought all brand new appliances. Most were kitchenaid (except the firdge that was jenair).
Good luck!

Hi M.! I feel like I should tell my washer and dryer story to you. We moved into our current home about 9 years ago. All the appliances were here when we moved in, including the old washer and dryer. They were pretty aged, and after a couple of times having them both fixed, we decided that we should probably get a new set before we sank more money into them. We had purchased a new Maytag washer (from a mom-and-pop local Maytag shop) months before moving out of our old home, but we had to leave it with the house as a condition of the sale. I KNEW that a Maytag was the only brand we would be purchasing, so it was simply a matter of where to find the BEST deal. Best Buy had a terrific no-interest deal going on on appliances over $399, I think, so I didn't look any further. This was in 2003, I'm pretty sure. The warranty only lasted a year, and what do you know?!? The month after the warranty went out, I had to call the appliance repair man to fix the washer, and then the dryer six months after that. Here's the kicker...when they came out to look at them, the guys chuckled and said that MY WASHER AND DRYER WERE MAGIC CHEF (or similar name, but I think that's what it was) APPLIANCES WITH THE MAYTAG NAME SPLASHED ACROSS IT! Simply put, Maytag makes a superior appliance (which sells for a higher price) and a cheap model, which is made with cheap parts but is still marketed as Maytag. The better model incorporates steel/heavyduty parts, and comes with a better warranty. The cheaper model is just that...with lighterweight metal/plastic parts here and there, and a teeny tiny warranty. It comes equipped with the Maytag name to make you feel better, but what's in a name when it breaks down yearly?!? So far, in the few years we've owned the pair, we've probably had the repairmen out 5 times total for one or the other. Right now, the washer is constantly off balance when I do a heavy load like towels...and the kids know to shut it off when it starts walking across the floor. If I could do it all over again, we'd buy a Maytag pair from a Maytag dealer rather than Best Buy...because apparently Best Buy doesn't sell the "real deal" in a middle-of-the-road washer or dryer. There are ways to tell if it's the "real deal," and I think it has something to do with looking inside in the washer lid and seeing a brand seal/number or something...but don't quote me on this. Just a simple word of warning from a laughed-at-by-the-repairmen gal! :)
I would first start with Consumer Reports and look at their advice. I know when we shopped several years ago Kenmore was the best for washer & dryers. That was back in 1999 and they are both still working great today. But I know a lot has changed in 8 years. But when we bought them, I read up and I learned about what features were good to have and what didn't matter.
Hope that helps.

I've bought all those appliances in the last year and a half as well. I have the Whirlpool duet washer/dryer, GE stove and microhood and KitchenAid fridge and dishwasher. So far I like them all but I'm not sure I'm sold on the diswasher, I think I'm still getting used to it.
Last time I redid a kitchen I bought 1/2 from Abt and 1/2 from Sears. I'll never do that again. When my new fridge went out it took Sears a week to service it and it was still under warrenty so the fact that Abt could be there that day would have meant forfitting my warranty. Needless to say I'll only buy from Abt from now on. They stand behind their products, can come out to service them quickly if necessary and you never actually pay sticker price especially if you are buying more than one item at a time.
I didn't like the way one of their guys installed an AC window unit last summer and they not only came out to fix it, removed the installation charge but they even gave us more money off on the unit itself. They are great to work with and are online as well.
We recently built a new house and I did a TON of research. We ended up buying the LG front load washer and dryer which I like but be sure you know where exactly the hook ups are so that you can purchase ones where the doors open properly. We have the doors openeing against eachother right now and it's a huge pain in the butt. Other then that I love them. Very efficient. We also bought the LG fridge with the double doors and bottom freezer. I read a lot of reveiws on this fridge and was a little nervous buying it because some were not very good but we've had it now for almost 6 months and I really couldn't be happier. The stove and micro came with our house. And I did a ton of pricing. I first did internet pricing and Home Depot will meet internet pricing. So I used that and then went to Grants and told them Home Depots price and they BEAT home depots price so I save a lot of money by doing alot of pricing and using the different vendors against eachother. Good luck!
When we moved in our home ten years ago there was a very old looking Amana refrigerator in the kitchen. We used it until we had a problem with it, and that took 5 years. So... I was convinced to buy the same brand when it came time to replacing it. I have had the current Amana refrigerator for five years, and I love it. I love having the freezer drawer on the bottom, too.
I also have an Amana microwave. We bought it when we moved in, and had not had any problems (10 years) except I pulled the handle too hard once and it became somewhat detached from the door. (I just glued it back with Gorilla Glue.
Our Maytag washer and dryer are also 10 years old, and they are fine. I only had to have the dryer serviced once and paid approx. $125 to fix it. Otherwise... no problems with either. The commercial with the Maytag guy servicing tv's and photocopiers does a good job explaining that their appliances do not need many repairs.
I like shopping at Sears and ABT for appliances.
Maytag, Whirlpool and Kenmore are all good brands for washer/dryers. Whirlpool is slightly less $ than the other 2. When I was researching appliances 3 yrs ago to replace ours, I actually found that Hotpoint stoves had the best ratings of all gas stoves, however at the time tehy were basically impossible to find outside of the west coast. Since then, Home Depot has started carrying them. The other well reviewed brand, which we ended up with, was GE. We also ended up with a GE fridge based on decent ratings and that we found a great one that was huge at Sears Outlet for a great price. Don't know if you need a dishwasher, but the 2 top rated ones there are Bosch and Jenn-air. We got the Bosch and while it does a good job, I don't love it.
We got all our appliances at Abt and Sears Outlet at great prices, as a suggestion on where to shop.
Good luck!
Go to Grants appliance you will get the best prices!!!
I would look at consumer reports, they will give you good advice for what you need. You can look on line at babycenter.com and you used to be able to access consumer reports, we joined on-line so we can look up things or you can go to the library and use their's for free.
Also, ABT, a store...where you can haggle. Especially since you need lots of things. We haggled and got the price down and extended warrenties..which we normally would not purchase and we have had to use on our stove. Just ask what is your best price...can you do any better...Trust me they will lower the price.
Good Luck
