We just moved into the same situation. After a week we decided we had to buy something, and just got a washer. I hang the clothes to dry on a clothes rack, and it actually works pretty well - and is a lot less work than I thought it would be. We looked around a bit too, and found the cheapest place was Lowe's. We also had a 10% off coupon from the post office moving packet - which saves a lot when buying a big purchase. We bought a front loader Frigidaire. I really like it! It saves energy and water, and the clothes come out a LOT dryer than a top loader - which makes drying time a lot faster since I just hang dry everything. The washer we bought was rated (I don't know by who) best washer under $1200 and it works great, and holds a lot more clothes than a top loader too, so I have less loads to wash. We bought a 4 year extended warranty, and with the discount it all came to $700, which is a lot less than some, but enough to get something decent.
If you don't want to fork out the cash, check your local newspaper or radio station. They should have a 'free' section where people are trying to get rid of stuff. Here there were a lot of free washer and dryers listed that just need to be picked up (we didn't have a way to bring them home, so Lowe's delivery was nice.) Anyway, hope that helps. :)
