Need Suggestions for Fine Hair

My daughters are growing their hair long, which is great - except it's always in their eyes!! I've tried ponytail holders, barrettes, headbands - everything I can think of. Does anyone have barrettes that stay in hair well? Their hair is very fine and the barrettes I have for them slip out really easily. They also like to take barrettes and ponytails out and (of course) scatter tiny hair products all over the house.
Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice! I'm going to look for some grippy barrettes and headbands. I also want to try the diamond pattern hairdo, since I am really clueless about what to do with little girl hair.

J.,
try the little rubberbands that resemble a colored version of what goes on teeth braces. Goody sells them. I found them at Target. They are small and won't slide out. You get just tons of them in a package, too so you can just clip them out at the end of the day.
Enjoy!

The little tiny rubber bands that people use when they have braces work pretty well for holding fine hair back. They don't always look that attractive, but if you could place a nicer looking hair holder over the top of it, it should stay in as long as the little band is keeping the hair still.

Yes I also have a 5 year old girl with fine hair. I buy the barrettes that have a rubber grip on them from Walmart. My daughter's hair has some curl, so the small ponytail holders hold at the end of braids because the curl at the end helps keep them in place.
As for the scattering of small hair items, my friend had a good idea I adopted. We have a sandwich baggie of ponytail holders, one of barrettes, and so on. Then since we each have little ones in diapers we used an empty wipes container to store it all in. I am sure a shoe box would do the trick. My daughter now takes things out and puts them back when she's finished. Hope that helps :)

Ha! This sounds just like my house with my 4 year old. I find clips and bands all over the house. The best luck I have with her is putting one little pony tail on top of her head to keep it out of her eyes with a little terry cloth pony tail holder. She's still take them out on occasion though! She seems most likely to forget this setup though out of any. And I haven't had a lot of luck with any kind of barrette.

Good luck! i feel your pain.

My daughter has super fine hair also, when we do ponytails or pigtails we use the Goody elastics that are really tiny and still have to wrap it about 3 or 4 times but they hold really well and you just toss them when you're done. Also, I make and sell clippies with velcro in them and they stay really well also and they're super cute I might add! www.amyandavery.etsy.com

My daughter has fine hair also and I have a horrible time getting barretes to stay in. I use these little rubber bands. can't remember what they are called, but they are really tiny and come in clear or a variety of colors. They stay in wonderfully and you can put a barrette over them or in front of them too which is nice. You can find them by the regular hair stuff or sometimes in by the infant/toddler section. Good luck!

I've found little alligator clips, covered in ribbon (so they're cute), but with a velcro strip on the inside. The velcro sticks.

Or, goody make really small, grippy elastics. Pulled tight enough they're too difficult for little hands to get out.

My daughter is almost 2 years old, and we are growing her bangs out as well. We have a children's hair salon in my town that sells barrettes for kids. The difference is that they are a metal clip with fabric covering them, and between the clip wear it closes there is a tiny magnet holding the two sides together to helps hold the barrette from slipping out. I love them and they work great. The down side is that the cost between $3.50- $5.50 for one barrette depending on how fancy they are.
The salon in West Bend Wisconsin is called Stylin' on main for kids. 1-###-###-####. Maybe they could ship you some. Or check your local kid salon. Another option is a head band? I hope this helps. If I can help some more let me know. N.

Walmart has barrettes that are non slip. They have a clear plastic piece on the under part of the barrette that holds it in the hair perfectly. You can also buy non slip rubber bands for their hair too. My 2 girls barely have hair, but love those things, and I hunted all over for things that would work. Good Luck!

J., ive seen a really cute hair style and have used it on others, as well, you buy the cute little clips, small as you can get, some are so small, they are hard to use, but its a cute hair style, you clip about four around the front of the hair line, in some hair so all the hair is clipped back, then you take between the first and second clip, half the hair from each and clip that behind in the middle of clip one and two, now you clip between 3 and four, in the middle, again spliting the hair that is in those clips, and that clip holds that hair, you repeat this process till the head is covered in little clips but by spplitting the hairs that is all ready in a clip and clipping between those it gives a nice pattern on the head, like diamonds, its cute on little girls especially with different colors going on there, you just clip the first row, then add clips as you go to the back of the head, from the all ready clipped hair, its cute, and most of them stay in, unless they are playing in it, haahhaha i hope this helps, if you dont get a clear understanding, let me know and ill try to reexplain it, D. s

A quick suggestion to use the hair accessories you already have, spray a little bit of hairspray where you are going to put the clip or pony and that will help to hold it into place.

Wrap a real rubberband around the clip part of the barrett and it will help to keep the barretts in.

As far as ponies, I would suggest using the tiny vinyl ponies that come in packages of about 100. They can either slip out or I used to cut them out because they were so inexpensive.

Good Luck!

You could try the cloth head bands some have a soft plastic grippy on them. the plastic binders are better at her age but it is hard with fine hair.

My hair is still baby fine, and I'm 53. I perm my hair, I don't suggest it for little girls. Try hairbands they might stay in better and will keep the hair out of their eyes. You could try a volumizing shampoo and conditioner but it really dries out the hair. I use it when I want my hair to look more full but I always need to add a leave-in conditioner along with my regular rinse-out conditioner. When I was little my Mom kept my hair short and I hated it. But it really is easier to control fine hair when it is shorter.

You can buy any barrette or bow, open them, take a glue gun and place a small line of glue on the bottom part. It will dry and the end result will cause friction to stay in the hair. You can get a bag of orthodontic rubber bands (the kind kids use for braces). I used those with my daughter and she couldn't get them out.

my daugter doesn't like to keep them in, but I think it was the Goody brand of barretts, the plastic ones, that seemedt o have a better grip on them.
