Hair Product for Little Girl - Trying to Keep Hair Neat in Pig Tails/pony Tails!

My 2-1//2 yr. old daughter has thick, but fine hair. It slips out of pig tails and pony tails and she ends up looking like the Geico Caveman after a few hours. :)

I know it will be easier when her hair is a bit longer, but in the meantime, is there a non-greasy product I could use to help it stay put? I don't want to use gels that make her hair shiny & "crunchy", either!

What can I do next?

My daughter has really fine hair too - I can vouch for the tiny hair elastics that look like the rubber bands people use on braces, like some others have suggested. I got a pack of like 500 of them from Walmart for just a few bucks 2 years ago and I still have a bunch of them left - if you lose some, no big deal, but they hold her hair great. I have to brush her hair through with detangler all the time, since the "tangle fairies" like to visit on a nightly basis. Clips are worthless for her hair.

I would not put product in her hair.

If you have hair items that you love and want to make them grip her hair better, either layer them with the elastics that grip (Sally's and Meijer usually have them) or take a popsicle stick ( or disposable spoon, etc.) and get some non-toxic epoxy at a hardware store that dries clear. Coat the inside of your clips or elastics with the epoxy, making sure to put it on in DABS, not in a smooth layer. You want it to be able to have some rough spots or little peaks when it dries, because this is what grips the hair. Let it dry thoroughly overnight or according to the package directions, and then use.

You can also google for grippy hair bows and come up with pre-made cute products made in a similar fashion as I described.

They have ponytail holders that have grippy stuff on the outside -- they are made for exercising I think but would work for your daughter. I have the finest most slippery hair and they stay in mine.

They are by Goody and they are called "StayPut" and you can feel the rubbery stuff on the outside. www.simplyhairaccessories.com/product/76770

Well, you certainly have a dilemma. Products are what makes the hair stay in place and there isn't anything out there that will stay invisible.

I use a natural brush, not the spiny things that have little balls on each bristle. I do her hair wet, out of shower and towel dried a bit. I put in Pantene hair gel or mousse and then brush it up and put the hair accessory in. This is how I do pony tails, pig tails, french braids, etc...they stay all day and look good.

If her hair is dry I spray the hairbrush with quite a bit of hairspray then brush the hair where I want it. This is what we do for up-do's during recital. It is pretty stiff but stays very well.

Here is a link to a hairbrush that is similar to the one I use. Obviously there are much much less expensive ones but this one is similar. Make sure the bristles are not too soft or they won't pull through the hair.

Hi 312-

All my girls got 'my' baby fine hair...**sigh**

I have a small spray bottle...I fill half water...half 'sport gel'...shake vigorously each use...then spritz it on!

Does not get 'scrunchy'...yet gives some hold.

Best Luck!

My daughter is 26 months and she has very thin, fine, curly hair. I have never had a problem with her hair slipping out. We use the clear Goody rubber bands, they come in a pack of 3 sizes. We use the smallest ones on her- the look about as big as M&M's, but they stretch out and work wonderful.

Her hair is so thin and fine that clips, ribbons, and other things fall right out but never these rubberbands.

My 3 year old daughter's hair is sooo fine! I have really thick hair, so I am still trying to figure out what in the world to do to keep her ponies in! I've never wanted to put hairspray or anything in her hair, but I am at a loss myself. I have no advice, just want to see what other people will say! :D

I 2nd the mom who said to try the Stay Put pony tail holders. They are awesome! Our youngest has fine hair (she is 3) and I found these about a year or two ago. They are the only thing that will stay in her hair and keep it cute. They stay in during a nap and swimming and do not hurt to take out.

Have you tried the no slip hair bands? They look like rubber bands but smaller and in different colors. My three year old has real fine hair but long and these are the only thing that will stay in her hair.

Definately get the tiny little rubber band looking things. I have a pack of pasel rainbow colors (whitem pink, teal, blue, etc). They are maybe 3/4 inch diameter and a bazillion of them came in pack (actually I found them among my mothers things, saved them and ahve been using them for fixing my daycare girls hair, daily for months..and haven't even put a dent in the amount!).

We play "beauty shop"...to fix hair..or just do hair after one poor Daddy's attempts in the morning! Poor Daddy! He tries but 2 year olds thin wispy hair is always in her face which makes both of us nuts all day!

I know many parents who will do the spray bottle with watered down detangler if thats an issue, or the watered down get if the fly aways are the problem. So go that route! But definately get those little binders and a fine toothed comb to get it all in and smooth. Probably won't survive nap time (thats usually when we do "beauty shop" around here..after nap)...but otherwise they do well!

Good luck

We use the tiny Goody rubber bands too. We have used them since my daughter's hair was long enough to pull back. And we don't have problems with them slipping out. Getting messy in the car seat or having her rip them out...yes, but they don't slip out of her hair. I'd probably try that route before putting any products in her hair.
