Good Makeup Products Wanted!

I am in my early 30's and have very fair skin. I still have breakouts (mostly on my chin and forehead) and need good, inexpensive products to cover my acne flair-ups. I do not like oily anything and prefer something with SPF sun protection. I'd like to try mineral makeup but not sure what to start with. I'm not a makeup wearer by nature, so I need something that looks as natural as possible while still covering problem areas. I have tried several acne products including ProActiv without luck. Any advide on makeup and facial cleansing without overdrying for sensitive skin would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi J.. I am an Independent Consultant with Arbonne. I started using their skin care products and makeup three years ago. I used to have a lot of problems with clogged pores and breakouts. Not at all now. Their foundation is great. I prefer liquid to powder foundation, but they do have both. Feel free to contact me for more information. And the price is very, very reasonable.

There is a book called "The Skin Type Solution" by Dr. Leslie Baumann. She is a dermatologist. It is very good. It has a lengthy questionairre that determines your skin type (one of 16 different types) and then she recommends products for your type. I have used it for 3 years now and she was right on the money for me. I think it comes in paperback although I own the hardcopy version. If you REALLY follow the instructions it will work. She also includes products of all price ranges so it can fit your budget.

Hi I just started using dermalogica and I love it. Ive had acne probs all my life and this is the first time Im really happy with my cleanser. Ulta offers dermalogica face mapping for free and i highly recommend asking them which products to use. I think what would interest you is that they have a tinted moisturizer. It works well for one of my girlfriends but I need to use one with more coverage made by Mdskincare. Before my visit, I was interessted in the mineral makeup but its not good for my skin type. Check it out :)

Hi J.,

You should try a product called Glimpse, it is a toxin free cleansing product. Most products out there contain harmful materials such as engine cleaner and other harmful toxins that absorb into your skin. Glimpse on the other hand contains NO toxins and is very beneficial. Please check out my ____@____.com/MMSALGADO and go to products then click on Glimpse. You can read all about how it works, and then to read some testimonials and to order it you can go to Theoneperfectsystem.com/msalgado, enter your info and click on products and that will give you more information on the Glimpse. Check it out you will not be disappointed. Please also feel free to contact me if you have any questions :) Thanks, M. Salgado

I have just recently started using the Bare Minerals products and LOVE THEM!! they are not exactly cheap, but it's totally worth it. They have a set of your shade (and they help you find out your shade)at the SEPHORA in the Coronado mall for $65.00 dollars. You get three different shades, what they call the mineral veil powder (it's a powder that just evens everything out) and 3 brushes in the set.

Good luck finding a product you like. I don't think i'll ever go back to regular powder and foundation again!!

Hi J.

I have fair skin, don't like makeup and get occassional blemishes. I started using Neutrogena Healthy Skin enhancer. It is a very sheer liquid, has retinol, is oil free and has an spf of 20. It is fairly inexpensive and can be purchased at most stores like target or Ulta,. I also use Aveeno Ultra Calming moisturizer spf 15.

My good friend is an estitician, and helped me a lot with my breakouts. I don't really get them anymore. She did a lot of peels on me, and she works at a doctors office if you want her number.

Also, I really like this stuff called everydayminerals.com. Bare Minerals exacerbated my pores I thought. I looked into it, and a lot of mineral makeups have this ingredient called bismuth oxychloride which can make your pores look bigger. But it does provide thicker coverage. I also use just a drug store concealer that works well.

Well I went to a dermatologist about my exact problem. She prescribed me some cream for it. But she said my skin was really not that bad and when I told her I use noxema anti-blemish pads the only thing she recommended was to follow up with Oil Of Olay complete al day moisture lotion with SPF15 for sensitive skin. The combo works great for me. I have problems when I do not cleanse my face at night before bed and for that I just use oil of olay face wash and agin follow with lotion. Good luck.

I really like the L'oreal mineral makeup. It's a lot cheaper than most, and you can get by with the foundation and bronzer (to add back that natural-looking color difference so you don't look like a china doll). I've also used the Bare Essentials products, which I have to say, are amazing. But for the price difference ($45-$55 versus $13) I'd go with the L'oreal. I didn't like the Neutrogena one, by the way.

I know you didn't ask, but have you ever tried cutting out milk? My husband has some weird milk reaction...he's had pretty bad acne his entire adult life until he cut out the milk. Now he just breaks out when he cheats and has butter or milk or cream in something. He can still eat cheese, just not anything too close to milk in its original form. No yogurt, sour cream, etc. Might be worth a shot?

Good luck!

Hi J.,
You want to look for skin care products and make up that do not contain mineral oil. It is an oil that our bodies cannot process and utilize and clogs pores. I have dealt with similar skin issues myself. I have found that the Arbonne products have helped my skin immensley.I have been professionaly trained in make up application and can help you pick out the right types of make up and colors for your skin (absolutley free)as well as skin care. You can visit my web site www.beautifulinside.myarbonne.com for information on the products and contact me through the site or through here. Good luck and I would love to help you out!

Hi J.,

I too have fair-skin and breakouts. On my wedding day the makeup artist used something by Jane Iredale, I think it's called Disappear (I could be wrong about the name). It's like a foundation, but it doesn't look cakey and you can't even tell you're wearing anything and it covers absolutely everything. I'm not sure how much it costs...probably $30 dollars for a tube, but it should last a long time. I also use Prescriptives, while it's not cheap, it does a really good job covering my acne without looking like I have much on. I usually just put on the concealer and the compact. A compact is $30 and lasts me about 6 months and the concealer costs around the same and has lasted me longer than I should own it (I've had it for almost two years). I tried to go back to using cheaper store brand items and found that they started making my face break out even worse. I tried a lot of different expensive brands and none of them seemed to match my skin tone very well or they looked like my face was painted on. I really like the prescriptives products.

Hi,J.! My daughter uses Mineral Make up by Purity, which we got online. It's not cheap, but it's not oily and very attractive. They offer a trial set, but be careful to send it back within the first week if you don't like it. If you don't, they'll send you another, larger more expensive kit before you know what hit you. But you can buy it in stores, especially at Ulta. It comes in a "creamy base" (just moisturized, not oily), two tones of foundation and a finishing powder. It sounds like it should be heavy, but it's not. I've tried it myself a couple of times. Try that and good luck! Hugs, Kat

Beautiful skin doesn't need makeup for anything but enhancement - your skin is your body's largest organ - it absorbs everything you put on it so you should be aware of what is in the products you choose. You might be interested in an all-natural skin care line that not only cleanses and polishes your skin, but repairs, nourishes and moisturizes. All without the chemicals or synthetics in most products that actually cause more drying and damage. This skin care line also includes an extract from a rainforest fern that actually protects your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. If you want more information feel free to contact me or visit my website: www.shootingstarherbs.amazonherb.net.

Most of the products include SPF. Also look into the MARK products, the have many items for sensitive skin. Hope this helps, email me with any questions.

Hi J.,
I am not a Mary Kay Consultant but do love their products. Mineral make up does not look good over acne. Because it's a little shimmery it will accentuate any and all bumps or large pores. I suffered from adult acne and consequently have tried a lot of things. The best thing I have found is to use a matte powder. I love MAC makeup powder. Been using it now for years. It's not a liquid foundation. I hate foundation especially in the heat. Plus I don't like to wear too much makeup. The powder did not cause me any acne and has great coverage. Mary Kay skin care is wonderful too! I love their products. I also recommend talking to a dermatologist about Accutane before you develop any scarring. Especially if you are breaking out all the time. If not then another great product for break outs is Erno Laszlo black sea mud soap. It even clears blackheads...it's that good! I used it when I was breaking out and it helped a lot. Good Luck.

This was a great question as I am extremely fair complected and am allergic to most cosmetics, including those natural Bare minerals, Arbonne, Mary Kay, Stri-Vectin, Benefit, any Department store product, expensive rainforest products, Burt's Bee's products, and the list goes on.....My experience is that people who are NOT fair complected do not understand what it's like to be allergic or sensitive to facial creams/applications. Their recommendations can often be ludicrous, such as, "Well, don't put the cream close to your eyes." Anything put on my face and hands will eventually migrate towards my eyes and I will have burning eyes for days.

Most of my friends use Prescriptives or Dermalogica. I have tried them, and can use them for short periods, before I start to react. For instances, I can use Dermalogica longer than I can use Prescriptives, before I need to give my skin a break. I can ALWAYS use Lubriderm, Original, lotion, but then can not use another tinted brand over it. UGH! What skin type is this?

I have figured out with time that I am specifically allergic to the chemical Octinoxate, used in almost all facial sunscreens. For a while, Clinique used to carry a tinted sunscreen without this additive, but changed their formula a couple of years ago. Costco carries a new line of cosmetics and their tinted sunscreen does not have Octinoxate. But the daily moisturizer with SPF DOES have it. Go figure. I can tolerate their tinted make up, which also helps cover up blemishes.

My fair complected sister tried the ProActive without any benefits. She is a busy teacher with 3 kids too and I've always thought there is too much stress in her life, which causes her breakouts. Finding the right make up will be just part of the solution to caring for your skin and breakouts. Ensure you are drinking healthy beverages to stay hydrated, eating lots of fresh veggies/fruits, sleeping well, take a good pre-natal multi vitamin, etc.

I'll be watching the recommendations to learn from what others know.

I've been using Mary Kay for over 20 years and have been a consultant for a little over 5 1/2 years! I have loved the product line the entire time. We have different skin care formulas and products to meet your concerns. The mineral powder foundation is light and has great coverage. Give Cheryl a call for your complimentary facial. As she said, there is no obligation to buy, and it's some really good pampering time for yourself!

I feel you pain. I swear I have used every product out there. What I found that worked for me was Cetaphil products. They are sold at walgreens, target, walmart etc. They are facial cleansing products and moisturizers. I only occasionally have breakouts now so I am pretty fortunate not to have to wear makeup. Hello J.,
I have to agree with most of the responses, Bare Minerals is the best. I used Revlon before and I've noticed a huge difference. It's also very safe for problem skin. I also have breakouts and since I started using Bare Minerals it has been minimum because it does not irritate my skin at all. It is also SPF 15 or 30. I also like the Dermalogica products for cleansing my skin. It may be a bit pricey, but in the long run it is well worth it. Ulta is a pretty good place to find a variety of beauty products. Good luck!

I have tried the Amway products and they are great!!! I went on a hunt for the great mineral Make up and found a bunch of different ones to try out. I got a bunch of free samples, tried them all, and could not find one I liked. I then joined Amway and tried their products. I love them and have really seen a difference in my breakouts. If you would like to try them please message me back. If you want to try a brand that you can get at the store try the cover girl kind. that one is good. My sister uses it. Good luck on your search.

I feel your pain! I am a red head with pale skin stuck in Tucson! I swear by Bare Minerals! I use the light in the winter and the fairly light in the summer. They have an spf of 15 which seems to be enough for my face in the sun down here! You would also need the Mineral Vail which is a must have also! They are not the cheapest make-up around but I think they are the best. I used to break out on my chin and forhead and I havent had that in about 6 years of using this make-up! I will also admit that I do NOT wash my face at night and believe it or not the makeup seemed to clear my issues faster that way! My advise is to check out QVC they are the cheapest I have found, ulta sell's it also and start with a kit so you get everything you need and usually a brush or two! I put the powder on between 5 and 7 days a week and one container lasts about 3 months, once you learn to use it you learn a little goes a long way! I have gotten more compliments on my face and people usually comment on my clear skin and never the makeup that is on it! If you have any other questions please let me know I would be happy to answer!

Great luck!
