When PC Gets Stupid

One, or at least one, of our news stations has takien to reporting descriptions of people who the authorities are looking for without reference to skin color. I noticed a week ago when they were looking for a 24 year old male, 5ft 10, 205 pounds. Errr

Tonight they are looking for a 14 year old girl, 5 ft 1 and 200 pounds that was taken from a hospital by her father while in protective custody by DFS. They have Ohio plates.

Am I the only one who thinks this take PC to the point of stupid? You want to find the person! Right?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

No skin, eyes, hair, nothing that can be used to determine race, or who they are. It is crazy I tell ya!

Well good news, the other stations have not joined the insanity.

Sue, nope, the other channels reported she is African American. Just this one station has decided to be stupid starting a couple weeks ago.

By the nine o'clock news they had photographs and dared to speak of her ethnic background. So what if someone had seen the child before nine?

That doesn't sound PC, that just sounds like lousy reporting!
I live in what has to be one of THE most "PC" places in the country (the San Francisco/Berkeley bay area) and I can tell you suspects and/or missing people are always described as "caucasian, african american, hispanic, etc" in addition to other details, hair/eye color, height, age.
Like I said, sounds like lousy reporting, change the channel :)

Maybe they don't know. Maybe the person's skin color defies simple explanation, i.e. "white" or "black". Maybe the witness didn't get a good view. Maybe they were wearing winter clothes...

My grandchildren are not caucasian/white, but not everyone seeing them would describe them as "black". Then what? Do they call them "brown"? Race is not as simple as black/white.

I agree with you. I didn't realize PC had gone this far. The paper and news programs in our area still reports on race, I think. I'll have to pay more attention. I do know that they do when reporting certain stories. If the story involves a police shooting they always say when the victim was black. Some community groups have asked for a federal investigation; therefore race is always in the news.

Yeah, that's annoying.

I am also not a big fan of Halloween being turned into a "Fall Festival" and Valentine's Day being turned into "Friendship Day". So sue me.

Yeah, stupid. Some people take skin color so far to one side it's racism, and the other side is stupid PC.

To me, the color of our skin is like the color of a car - the inside is a car, no matter what color the outside is, and if you're going to describe the car, you have to say what color it is. Duh - sheesh.

I agree with you, J.. This is pretty much useless reporting. Just another example of a tradition, trend, habit or guideline becoming a slavemaster rather than a servant, as it was originally intended. People do this all the time, in just about every area of our lives. Sigh.

There are a few news outlets down this way that only give that information if the individual is white. If they are not white, they do not mention race/ethnicity at all. Interesting, no? Doesn't make it hard to figure out when it is a "non-white" person they are looking for.... Still annoying though.

Eye and hair color is not a race thing, and a putting a picture of the person is not racist either.
When a kid is missing any little clue is worth it, that is my opinion.

Unfortunately our society has made us PC. There are many out there that get offended with the smallest remarks which I feel has made folks very cautious as to what they say and how they say it. The world wasn't like this 20 years ago so I don't understand the change. I very mush continue to say things like Merry Christmas not Happy Holidays because that is what I have been saying for years. I do think we are have become too PC and I think people need to get over themselves and how others will respond. Just my thoughts . . .
