i started shopping around 6 months pregnant. I have always been the one to play it safe though so i waited untill i knew if something would happen baby would have a good chance.
I am 13.5 weeks pregnant and I've had 9 ultrasounds since 5.5 weeks with everything growing perfect, nuchal fold screening was perfect, it's all going very well so far. I know that there is still a risk, but I was wondering when everyone else felt secure enough to start buying things for their baby/babies? I was thinking 20 weeks sounded reasonable, since anything major should come up by then. However, this is my first baby, I'm 39 years old, TTC for 7 years and I don't think I can wait that long!!!!!
When did you feel safe to start shopping???

Oh honey, from my experience you enjoy them while they are with you and don't worry so much. When my fourth child passed away, I was thankful for the things that I had purchased for her. They were my keepsakes of her. Very soon you will begin to feel that little one wiggle. Sit back and enjoy every movement. You are a Momma right now and enjoy it.
We had our youngest when I turned 41 after the death of two children. We purchased things when ever we wanted them. Enjoy!
Congratulations to you! I don't have an answer about when--you'll have to decide--but I wanted to urge you to try not to worry about things and just focus on your love for your growing baby. There is so much worry, when you're pregnant and when your baby is tiny, and it's so hard not to worry, but it does get in the way of enjoying the wonderful experience of it all. Anyway, again--congratulations!--you're in for wonderful times ahead!
I had a miscarriage when I was 17 so my second pregnancy when I was 25 I waited a while before even telling anyone I was pregnant. I think I was 2-3 months before I even told anyone. After that I was very nervous that I would have another miscarriage but I did not let that affect my shopping for the baby. Unless you have some medical issuse to worry about, I think you should stop worrying about it. You are just causing yourself extra stress that you don't need. Focus on the positive that all of the ultrasounds and tests have been normal. If you are still worried about it but want to buy things then just make sure you keep the receipts for everything you buy. Then if something happens all of the items you have purchased can be returned.
Hi Yvette,
GO CRAZY GIRL! This is your first, and there will never be a more exciting time to buy buy buy! Congrats on your first little honey! My first was soooo exciting! Have fun, and enjoy this time.

I started when I was about 11 1/2 weeks along, when I got my home doppler. I was still a little scared, but slowly started accumulating things. Every week, I'd take money from our checks and purchase something so I wouldn't have to do it all at once. Now, I'm 31 weeks just about and only have a few things to go. (after baby shower). don't worry! they say miscarriage rate after 12 weeks is dramatically lower, especially after you hear and see heartbeat.
I did a lot of window shopping the whole pregnancy! But I didn't bring anything home my first pregnancy until the 3rd trimester. I am really not a superstitious person normally, but for whatever reason I just felt like I would be jinxing myself if I brought things home earlier than that. I was being silly, obviously, and with baby #2 I already had all the necessary stuff, so I guess... I started buying stuff right away (when it was on sale =). And both babies came out perfect, so I say, buy what you like, when you like! They can get to know you on a first-name basis at Babies R Us. =)
CONGRATS on your pregnancy! Sounds like it has been a long road; you must be very excited!!
Yvette, if you are excited, take advantage and buy a thing or two for the baby. As you said, things are looking good. I think I waited until 20 weeks or so, and my 20 week ultrasound, but if you feel ready, by all means, go for it. Celebrate your baby- it helps to make it all "real" sometimes. :)
Congratulations and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I would say that its safe to plan a registry, and to buy a few neutral gender items. I would however keep the tags on with receipts in case you change your mind. I had planned a Winnie the Pooh nursery, but then a few weeks later saw a set that a family member had put on their registry that I liked just as much, and wished I had seen it before saying I wanted a Winnie the Pooh nursery.
As for buying the big ticket stuff like a crib, dresser, changing table, etc. I waited until I was 30 wks along. I had been buying diapers of different sizes, blankets, washclothes, wet ones, etc. all along. I put as much money towards my nursery splurge fund as possible. My baby was due in early Nov., so in early Sept, I took the biggest family car I could get a hold of, and a family member, and set off for the store. The furniture had to be ordered, so I paid for it that day, and then went back a few days later to get it.
When planning your registry, put an infant carseat and a frame stroller - the travel system strollers are HEAVY, and are hard to fit into trunks. a lightweight stroller, and a regular size convertable carseat.
Also, before you purchase big items or signup for a registry, check the store's online website, and return policy. My first pregnancy I signed up at a local store only to then realize after the baby shower that they had a 'returns = store credit only' policy! I wish I had realized that beforehand.
Congrats

i started as soon as I saw a cute sleeper at Target.
I was very young with my first pregnancy so I couldn't really afford to go out and buy a lot, but I recall being so excited with my second baby that I was out buying things right away...its all about how comfortable you are. I have known friends that were decorating a nursery Before they conceived Just because they were "trying" to get pregnant. Its all what feels right to you.
Congrats!!!
I started buying a few little things like onesies , hats when I was around 15 weeks (after I'd heard the heartbeat) , I just could not wait any longer! , at 20 wks once I knew the sex that was it , I went and bought , go and do it , having your first is sooooo exciting!
Congratulations
I would say fulfill your shopping urge by going out and completing registries. The great thing is you can go nuts and register for EVERYTHING you wish for but you don't have to worry about paying for it! Then if you have a shower, your registry is ready to go. Once you see what you get from showers and just various gifts from family and friends you can start shopping late in the pregnancy to fill in any holes. Other than the fear of something happening with the pregnancy, from a practical standpoint it's not wise to buy things for yourself this early because you will inevitably have people asking what they can get you and you'll have already bought it all!
Good luck,
K.
Hey there, Congrats on your pregnancy! We waited till we found out what we were having which was 20 weeks then we went and registered and bought a bunch of things for our son! Im thinking that you must be high risk if you have had 9 ultrasounds in 13 weeks! So id prob wait a little bit longer too.....But again Congrats!!
