Hi, I am trying to pick out a good book for my twelve year old daughter who loves to read. She likes books like the Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and Maze Runner and one of her favorites is The Giver. I would like it to be age appropriate. Thanks and Happy Holidays everyone!

What can I do next?

At that age, I loved "A Wrinkle in Time" and all subsequent novels to follow. I still read them now and again because they are just that good.

A book that really touched me and my kids is "Missing May" by Cynthia Rylant.

It's not a very long book and it's written in a style that's different from those you mentioned that your daughter likes. However, it leaves a lasting impression. It's very good. It's about a 12 year old girl, but even my son couldn't put the book down once he started reading it.

Best wishes and Happy Holidays to you too!

My daughter will be 12 in a few weeks and she loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. The next book she is reading is The Hobbit (since she wants to see the movie). If your daughter likes Harry Potter, she might like the Hobbit. There is a really nice version out there that is a hard back that has great color pictures (this is the one I read at that age). It makes the book that much more fun to read (I don't even know if that version is still in print, actually. Hopefully it is).

The Twilight Saga. I am reading The Host, also by Stephanie Meyers right now and it is pretty good. I started reading the Anne McCaffrey Dragonriders of Pern series when I was twelve, and I was a huge fan of S.E. Hinton (The Outsiders, Rumblefish etc) as well.

I bought my 12 y/o the American Girl books, not only does she love reading them, she loves learning what's going on with her body and why. I know you were probably shooting more for fiction but it wouldn't hurt for her to learn more about her body :) I bought....

My Side of the Moutain and it's sequel, but I don't recall the author's name. You can find it on amazon. It's about a boy who left his family (maybe ran away?) and lived the woods for awhile. I read it at your daughters age.

Johnny Tremain, but I can't recall the author on this one either, I just know it's a woman. The story is about the Revoluntionary War and how it's seen through the eyes of Johnny Tremaine. It's din't in a story format, so you don't realize you are actually learning about the war. I read it when I was 12, and many times throughout middle school and high school for fun, even though I hated history.

Everyone else has mentioned what I would have suggested. Happy reading!
