my son really enjoyed the tripod trilogy by John Christopher: The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, and The Pool of Fire. He's a sci fi fan as well. If I think of any others i'll add them.
My 12 year old scarfs down books with incredible speed. Before summer is upon us, I'd like to know what books you know of that a middle school boy would love to read. His favorites are sci fi but if you know of other ones, we'd love to hear what other kids like. Thank you!!

My sons like the Alex Rider series, The warlock series, Septimus heep series, Rangers Apprentice, series, Eoin Colfer books, he just started reading the Hunger Games trilogy. The Overlander series, Percy Jackson and the other Rick Riordan books, Just to name a few.
Also- some of the older Star Trek and Star Wars novels are age appropriate (no sex, some violence).
My son is enjoying the Pendragon series by MacHale. If your son likes the first one, theres about ten more in the series. Also, he enjoyed City of Ember series, the Hobbit, and "Heaven is for Real".
The Cirque de Freake series was recommended by my son's 7th grade teacher. They are about vampires and were out LONG before the girl's Twilight series. My son read all 8!
My son prefers sci-fi also. He has read and liked -
Everworld by K. A. Applegate - this was by far my son's favorite series.
the Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins - these came in a close second
Eragon is the first book in the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
Harry Potter - of course - but I have to admit he stopped by book 5. The movies were everywhere by then...argh. He was also about 10 when he did these.
Witch & Wizard by James Patterson & Gabrielle Charbonnet
I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore
He also read the Hunger trilogy - I read it last summer and found it intense - and he is almost 16, so I don't know about 12. The book(s) are so much more intense than the movie.
I make it a point to read everything that he does - it gives us something to share and ensures that the books are appropriate for him. Also, we use our librarians for reference - in fact, they referred him to the Everworld and Underland series.
I'll ask him if he can recommend any others and PM you if you would like. Just let me know.
My husband enjoyed reading sci fi and fantasy. His favorite author at that time and still today is Stephen Lawhead. I have read some of the books and they are good.
Call or email his English teacher and/or the school librarian, they will be able to tell you what is "hot" right now :)
I would agree with the former person who recommended Eregan and the other 3 books of that series. My husband is a Sci Fi reader and asked him what he started out with as a middle schooler and he recommends Andre Norton. She started out with books for young people. Back then women were not taken serious for Sci Fi. so therefore Andre. Although she is now dead, she has many books. You can even download many on e-reader from your library to you phone. Good for on the road. Anne Mc Caffery along with her son Todd also write very good Sci Fi. I have read several of all these authors and enjoyed them. The Eregan series is my favorite. You always have the Hardy Boys. Happy Reading.
Take a look at the Scholastic Books website for his reading level. I'm sure it will give a lot of great suggestion.
There's also Percy Jackson Series & The Kane Chronicles both series by Rick Riordan. Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Definitely the John Christopher books. He is probably old enough for a lot of Robert Heinlein's books. If he hasn't read Madeleine L'Engle's books (Wrinkle in Time trilogy) yet, he should. You should also try Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea series.
Definitely second the vote for Rangers Apprentice by Flanagan - great books - I loved them as much as my boys!
Also - the Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander is a great series - the first one is called The Book of Three - there are 5 in that set...
Have you heard of Ralph Moody and his series Little Britches - it is about a boy growing up in Colorado when Colorado was part of the wild west. Different genre from what has been listed, but good books nonetheless. Some of the adults in the book use somewhat 'salty' language - just so you know.
Happy reading!
my son started reading the Rangers Apprentice series when he was in 6th grade. there are 10 of those books and the author has started a new series. also the percy jackson books and the 39 clues books
War of the Worlds and Journey to the Center of the Earth - my son read both several times, and says they are much better than the movies (and he loves both movies).
He also loved the Percy Jackson and Christopher Paolini books that have already been mentioned.
His favorite book when he was about 11 was The Sight by David Clement-Davies. I read it too because he loved it so much. I think it's the first in a trilogy. It's about 400 pages I think, and it's very well-written. It's told from the point of view of a family of wolves, but it's not a children's story. It's really fascinating. I loved it even though it's not generally my type of book. My son was obsessed with wolves for a couple of years after that, and he still likes them.
Anything by Rick Riordan. My middle school son loves anything he writes.
If he likes fantasy types, my little brother and I read the Percy Jackson series and really liked it. He also liked Harry Potter, so if your son did, too, it might be something to look into.
Our library website has a section where you can click if you like a certain genre, it will recommend more books for you. I love to do that and find random books for myself that I never would have found otherwise.
Also, if he likes sci-fi, and has ever watched Doctor Who, my husband and I enjoy reading the novels they write to go with the show. I have a ton I found at Half Price Books, and I've also gotten them at the library. They have them for all the different Doctors, so it's fun. They're the same level as the show, never anything dirty, which I like about them.
My son loves the Alex Ryder series. This is kind of a 007 for boys and I think the kid is 15 or something like that. I cannot remember the author but look up Alex Ryder. I think there are 4 or 5 books. Also, if he liked Harry Potter, he might like books about Septimus Heap. None of my kids liked Harry Potter but one of my girls has read the first and most of the 2nd book in the series. The author is Angie Sage, starting with "Magyk". I actually lilked these books and got teased for reading a "child's" book.
My son (age 13) is like yours he will read everything. His favorites right now are the Vampirates series by Justin Somper. My sons teacher though has asked to try and make him read more of the classics, Tarzan, Treasure Island, etc.
