Tied in with the idea of making movie watching a more active event, I found a great site called "Kids of the Couch". They offer a weekly email that combines a kid friendly movie and an activity you can do with your children dealing with something in the movie. For example, this week's email suggested watching "Tale of Despereaux" + Cooking Minestrone with Kids.

Any of the Feature Films for Families. Rogue Stallion, Rigoletto, Split Infinity, Willie the Sparrow, Thumper the Seventh Rabbit.
Disney has their hidden agenda about homosexuality, even in their animations.
Veggie Tales are good, too. Of course they are christian based.

Are you talking about Christmas ones or every day ones? For Christmas, my boys love Christmas Story and the Grinch. For every day movies, they like just about everything. I think my favorite to watch with them is Nemo. Doesn't matter how many times I see it, I love it every time! They also love Underdog and Firehouse Dog.

We like the classics like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs & Broomsticks. You might even want to try other musicals too such as State Fair, Anchors Aweigh, Take Me Out To The Ballgame or On The Town. Of course with boys that age you are also good with all the Pixars movies - Cars, Toy Story, The Incredibles, etc.

What a great post! I haven't even heard of a lot of these movies, so I'll have to check them out.

My 4yo son LOVES "Speed Racer"- both the old cartoons we watched as kids & the new cool movie. It was the first he ever saw in the theater.

When my sons were under 8 years old, they enjoyed; The Jungle Book (Disney cartoon movie), The Snowman; by Raymond Briggs, (musical cartoon)and The Little Prince (musical movie) with Richard Kylie and Gene Wilder.

Saw this request posted on a sidebar. I LOVE movies. We grew up watching classic films and musicals. I recommend anything with Errol Flynn - Captain Blood, the Adventures of Robin Hood, Charge of the Light Brigade. If they enjoy musicals, then Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire movies are good, too - like Singin' in the Rain, or Easter Parade.

And, perhaps as a treat just for you, have you ever seen Thoroughly Modern Millie? It stars Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carol Channing, and it's pretty family friendly. It's quite funny. We watched it all the time growing up. Great way to teach them about the 20s, too, and how everyone is convinced they live in the most modern of times and that life starts fresh with them..... ;)

My boys really like Old Yeller, Lemony Sniketts (not sure on the spelling)and a good majority of what has been listed. I wonder if they would like some of the old classics like Darby O Gill and the Little People, Bed Knobs and Broomsticks, and the Wonderful Mr. Limpit? My kids like the classic movies. They like Star Wars, Back to the Future Trilogy, and the Indiana Jones series too, and a lot of the old Disney movies as well. I know its after the holidays, but hope I helped in some way!

My grandson loves the movie Barnyard. Great animated story with voices by Sam Elliott, Wanda Sykes, Kevin James and others. Lots of music and dancing, which he really likes.

My nephews love the Indiana Jones movies.

Funny you mention Sound of Music. My three year old daughter is in love with this movie right now. We actually just watched it the other night =)

Okay, I'm way late on this, but I was suprise to find that my 8 year old boy and 6 year old girl really like the High School Musical movies. The kids are really great role modles and my kids dance and sing the songs around the house for weeks after watching them.
There are so many great flicks out there for kids!

There are a lot of great ones there, but nobody mentioned "Toy Story"????? My daughter loves that one! (and I quite like it too!)

You got some great movie suggestions. Meet the Robinsons is super cute. Great family movie. Even my husband loves it. Hook is also a great one! Now that it's after the holidays, this one may not work but keep in mind for next year...Santa Claus the Movie. NOT the Tim Allen one (although cute) This movie was made in the 80's. Great story about Santa Claus.

Hello there, the brave little toaster

i know this is late but i came in to read all the neat ones and although alot of these are our favorites i am surprised it wasnt mentioned (unless i missed it) that one was my kids favorite when they were little they still watch it once in a while..

Milo and otis! live-action dog and cat on adventure... filmed in japan, so it's paced much more kindly than American films.

IN addition to those mentioned: Shark boy and lava girl, Nanny Mcphee.

My boys liked the Incredibles, Spy Kids, Shining Time Station, Magic School Bus, Veggietales and Classic Pooh

I have two boys (7 and 5yrs old) so in our house we have a wide variety of movies. We do our best to keep as many questionable movies out. We screen the movies before we let our kids watch them, too many movies today claim they are kid & family friendly but have much questionable material that we choose not to let our kids watch them yet.

So we have oodles of movies, don't forget to check your local library for movies to borrow to see if you like them before you buy them. Another option is Netflix. We have the $8 per month - one movie at a time but unlimited online. Our kids right now love to watch the Pink Panther cartoons online.

-Disney movies (the older stuff - including black & white) all of them are safe for everyone.Including Swiss Family Robinsons, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, & Dr Doolittle (the original) - just to name a few, Ok they like just about all of the older classic movies. I like Sound of Music but the boys don't care for it as much.
-Disney cartoons (I like the older ones but there are a few newer ones that I have issues with but most are good). Don't forget the Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy cartoons.
-Pixar cartoons (Toy Story, Cars, Nemo, etc)
-Veggie Tales
-Classic Cartoons (Popeye, Superman, Casper, Mighty Mouse, Pink Panther - their favorite right now)
-Classic TV shows - they LOVE Gilligan's Island
-Star Wars (the originals, the newer ones are a little strong for them right now especially episode 3, episode 1 is OK)
-The two new Narnia movies - I love them too
-Scooby Doo (cartoons, not the live action joke)

We do own Stand by Me & A Christmas Story but we have decided to wait until they are much older due to language and content in them. Happy movie watching (:>)

They both love Cheaper by the Dozen, Stuart Little, Home Alone, Free Willy, George of the Jungle, Casper, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, The Cat in the Hat, The Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka, and The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking.

I can't believe no one mentioned the Lion King or Tarzan those were my nephews favorite movies when he was 4-6! My daughter loves The Sound of Music and all the Shirley Temple movies. A few more favorites are:

Can't believe no one mentioned Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I loved it as a kid, and my daughter loves it!

Disney's "Enchanted" is a great family movie, and my 3 boys (ages 8, 5 & 3) enjoy it as much as my 5 year old daughter. The acting and the music is wonderful...you can't get the songs out of your head once you've heard them! Plus Patrick Dempsey is one of the main characters in the film, so just for that reason alone I could watch it a hundred times a day and not get tired of it!!

My all time favorite movie is Toy Story. I watch it with my 6 year old grandson all the time.

The Incredible Journey --this is the original for the Homeward Bound movies and I think it's far better.
Most of my other favorites are already mentioned.

I have girls, a few of my friends have little boys between the ages of 6-8 years old. When I asked them what they were into for Christmas, I was surprised that 3 of them were very excited about the Star Wars movies, Attack of the Clones was a favorite. Shark boy and Lava girl was a close second and the Spy kid movies.

For Boys; Cars, any old Goofy or Donald Duck movies, the Knob Mobile, Jungle Book, Home Alone

I was flipping through the channels the other day and actually saw "The Apple Dumpling Gang" on TCM. It's a kids "western" from the 70's. I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. I didn't like the sequel as much but the first one was cute.

Robbin Hood disney with the fox and bear. Little rascles old black and white and newer one. Labrinth, I didnt like the Dark Crystle but others really did. A Christmas Story is still a family favorite...you'll shoot your eye out. The Prince of Eygpt..the story of Moses. I loved all the Dr. Susses movies. When they are a bit older 10 Stand by Me was a favorite all us kids. We watched the t.v. movie because of all the cuss words. I never realized how racy it was till I bought the movie. Goonies. Shrek. Narnia, Treasure Planet, Peter Pan movie and cartoon. Drop Dead Fred- I recomend you watching that one before you let your kids due to his behavior if your kids tend to copy what is seen on tv then that one is a no no.

My kids loved Thomas the Tank Engine stuff when they were younger. Also enjoyed seeing certain Disney movies on the channel when we had it, but I don't know if they are available any other way--Johnny Tsunami, The Color of Friendship, Ready to Run.

Brave Little Toaster movies were good too for awhile.

How about Pink Panther?

My 14 yo still likes Dudley Do-right and Toy Story (1 and 2), as he did when younger!

I Love all those and I have an almost 3 who loves everything I mentioned through Jungle Book.

There is a Peter Pan movie, live action with real kids that is spectacular. It keeps 4-8yrs olds happy at the same time. Our friends let their kids watch Indiana Jones movies(incidentally which holds the record for the most amount of murders per minute ever in a movie as of 1994). Their oldest often thinks stuff is boring but loves this one.

I also found Cirque de Soleil videos I would rent from netflix fascinated the kids, it was less expensive than live tickets but I did have to be clear no double flip attempts on the bed.

Don't underestimate the old black/white Disney Zorro and stuff like it

I liked (and my kids seem to) The Sword in the Stone and The Hobbit (that series), and Mary Poppins.

Lots of good ones here- my kids also LOVE Nanny McPhee. (And I do too!)

Just about everything is listed already, but my 4-year-old son recently got hooked on Wallace & Gromit, clever and goofy British clay-mation. They had a feature-length movie called The Curse of the Were-Rabbit a couple of years ago or so, and we have some earlier shorter stuff on VHS tapes too. As a result, we've been eating a lot of crackers and cheese... :)
