Trying to Decide Between Edward, Hinsdale, Good Sam or Central Dupage

I just recently moved to Naperville and we are soon to be TTC #1 and I am completely lost as to which hospital to go out of. I currently go to West Suburban Women's Health and love them but not sure if I'm in love with Hinsdale hospital enough to drive 45 minutes when I go into labor. Does anyone have any input on any of these hospitals? Also, which practice you would recommend? Thanks so much in advance!

What can I do next?

I have delivered two children at Good Sam and would highly reccomend TRE Medical group. Dr. James Jenks is great! I also thought the hospital was very attentive. Good luck!

I vote for CDH. They have "state of the art" facilities and great Dr's as well. I believe they call their rooms "suites".

I had both my kids at Edward and absolutely LOVED it. No complaints whatsoever. I go to Naperville Women's Health. They have a group of doctors there - I like all of them. There number is ###-###-####. They are located on Brom Ct. right next to the hospital.

I had my daughter at CDH last October and I loved it! All private rooms, snack rooms on the Labor and delivery floor (so dad can eat whenever he wants to), Room service once you get to Mom and baby. The nurses and lacation consultants were amazing.

I go to Hinsdale and LOVE it, but 45 mins is a bit of a drive while in labor... But, I have never had a bad experience there, and everyone I ever dealt with was nothing but nice and helpful. Had 2 kids born there already and will deliver my 3rd there in May.

Hi A.,

I had one daughter at Edward and one daughter at Good Sam, both were great with nice accomodations. Nurses were also great at both hospitals. My ob/gyn is Dr. George Banuelos of Western DuPage OB/GYN. He is a wonderful, caring and highly skilled physician with a great bedside manner and nice staff. He has offices in both Downers Grove (directly across from Good Sam) and Naperville (75th and Book Road). I highly recommend both Dr. Banuelos and the two hospitals that he works out of. We are currently TTC #3 and would have no problem going to either hospital again to deliver. Best of luck to you!

Congratulations A.!
I had my son at Good Sam and my two daughters at Edward. My ob gyn stopped giving choices and focused his deliveries at Edward because he was delivering more babies as Naperville got bigger.
Your hospital partly depends on where your doctor has privileges to deliver your baby.
In case of emergency, 911 will take you to the nearest hospital.
More birthing information is available at www.birthlink.com JoAnn Lindberg gives consultations on birthing choices/plans.
More recently as a prenatal yoga teacher, I have worked with Moms who have delivered at all of the hospitals listed in your email and heard positive things from the Moms delivering at these hospitals.
I do recommend that you ask for a tour of the hospital and fill out forms ahead of time and have a plan for someone else to do the driving when you are in labor. I fondly recall my husband driving like a crazy person from south Naperville to Good Sam as I went into the labor with our son...the first part of labor started at home and then when we realized that the contractions were repeating 5-6 minutes apart we went to Good Sam (as earlier coached by the ob gyn...but each person works with their doctor to have a shared understanding of when its time to go to the hospital). I cannot say that the ride to the hospital was comfortable because I was having contractions during this drive.

I had my second child at Edward. First was at Northwestern Prentice. Boy what a difference! Edward was so much nicer and the staff was excellent and more friendly. I really liked my docs too at the Edwards Womens Health Center in Naperville off Hobson. I was 40 when I had the second one and had issues. They monitored my every move. I felt very secure in their hands. I had extremely low amniotic fluid in my 8th and 9th month to where they were going to take the baby early. They monitored me up until I finally went into labor with a healthy, though low weight baby girl (2 weeks early). It's a tough decision. You probably already have but visit and interview all that you are interested in. Go with your women's intuition. You'll know. Best of luck.

I live in the Naperville/Aurora area and am expecting number two. I am also out of West Suburban Women's Health and delivered my first one at Hinsdale. I had an absolutely wonderful experience at Hinsdale. I would not do it any other way with number two. The drive was not an issue the first time when I went into labor and hopefully won't be the second time. I recommend staying with the practice and the hospital. I couldn't have asked for more compassionate nurses, lactation consultants, etc... from Hinsdale.

If you are going with midwives, Hinsdale is awesome. I am a natural childbirth educator and have also served as Doula for my clients at Hinsdale hospital and it is a great place for natural birth. Edward hospital is getting better; I just delivered my 2nd there on 12/15/09 and they were actually really good with my birth plan, though I did have to fight on some things. Feel free to contact me should you have questions about these hospitals!!!

We moved here 1 1/2 yrs ago, was promptly pregnant and had a lot of anxiety about finding new MDs & hospital. I use Female Healthcare Associates, they have numerous offices which includes one in Naperville. Dr Lori Hardy I normally see, her and Dr. Moran delivered, saw all of them in practice since I had a complicated pregnancy and frequently needed to be seen...everyone was great. CDH was great, I was in and out alot prior to delivery, and all my experiences were good. The maternal-fetal medicine MDs were great, if for some reason you have complications. They have the highest level NICU around that is staffed by Children's Memorial...which is all good if you need such services, and you just do not know. The ER is also great, they have a regular ER as well a childrens. Hope this helps! Good luck! I hope you have a smooth pregnancy and a very healthy baby!

I delivered at Central Dupage and absolutely LOVED it. My husband put it best when he said we felt more like guests than a patient. They were very good to my husband while he was there, too. The nursing staff was fabulous, and I was in such good care. I highly recommend that hospital to anyone!!

I went to WSWH with the midwives and Patti delivered our daughter at Hinsdale. They are amazing and DEFINITELY worth the drive. If you are preferring a more natural birth, Hinsdale will support you in that. I had no drugs and a lot of pain, but NO ONE even suggested them for me since they knew that I didn't want it. They were a great hospital and fantastic practice. We had a 30 min drive to get there. It's fine. You're generally in labor for 15-17 hrs for your first so you have more than enough time to get to the hospital. Also, check to see if they deliver at the Bolingbrook hospital now since that's part of Hinsdale and has a OB ward. I'm not sure what direction you are, but it's not too bad.

I've had nieces/nephews delivered at both Edward and Central DuPage and I delivered at Rush Copley (on Ogden in Aurora, about 10 minutes west of Fox Valley mall). I loved Rush Copley for both of my deliveries. Central DuPage didn't have private rooms 7 yrs ago, might now, but I thought it was dumpy and not nice. Edwards was ok, but I still liked Rush better. So my vote is for Rush Copley.

I had my son at Edwards and I loved it. So much that I told my husband that I didn't care where we moved to I want to have our next baby there, we moved to Plainfield and I will not budge on the hospital. Good luck to you.

Hi! I delivered both my children at Central DuPage and was extremely happy with the experiences! At CDH, your Labor and Delivery Room is the same room (and private, of course!), so you don't have to be wheeled elsewhere and back. Once you get to the Mother/Baby Unit (post-delivery), it's more like staying in a really nice hotel than a hospital -- 100% private rooms, order your meals via room service, dessert cart comes around every evening, etc. The nurses have no problem with your decision of how much to keep your baby in the room (vs. leave in the nursery). I thought the availability of lactation consultants was excellent at CDH also (although it can get pretty busy during the "prime" feeding hours, as you can imagine!)

I strongly recommend you take a tour of each hospital before making your decision. I know CDH and Good Sam offers free tours for prospective parents. I took the tours very early in my pregnancy because it impacted the OB group I selected. I selected DuPage Medical Group (out of Glen Ellyn, with offices also in Naperville and Bloomingdale) and was happy with them.

Best Wishes!!

I LOVE Dr. John Carroll he has his own practice so you know who delivers your baby. I just love his bedside manner, too. He's funny & kind and I chose him because he's a high risk doc, even though I'm not a high risk patient, I figured if the you-know-what hit the fan I'd be in the right hands. His # is ###-###-####

CDH has a new wing on it for labor & delivery, you really ought to take one of their tours to really know what you're getting into. This doc also delivers out of Geneva, but if you're in Naperville, I think it'd be a bit out of the way. :)

Good luck & congrats!!

I love love love Hinsdale Hospital. I have been to all of the above listed hospitals. Either I or a family member has had stays in each hospital. For us there has been fewer problems post-surgically, etc. at Hinsdale than anywhere else. Overall the quality of care at Hinsdale is better than the other hospitals. The doctors we have had tend to be more cautious than other doctors at other hospitals. Also an added perk recently to the labor and delivery at Hinsdale is free massages for new mom's. I had my daughter there 2 years ago and had a fabulous experience. I had my son at Rush Copley and was very upset with my experience there. Hinsdale is definitely my pick. Good Luck!

I vote for Central DuPage!!! It is so great. And the neonatalogist are with Children's Memorial- so if heaven forbid something is wrong you have excellent care for your newborn! I had my first child at Elmhurst and second at CDH and they don't even compare to one another.
Best Wishes :)
