My 18month old is teething..getting his molars in and he has always gotten fevers when teething..I have been giving him tyelonal every 4hours exact and putting the teething oragel on his gums..The thing is he still feels that he is burning up after giving him tylenol as if it is no longer helping the fever go down..Any other suggestions to help with fevers or soothe my very fussy lil guy...Ive already given him a bath and he didnt even want to stay in and he normally will not want to get out..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I did take him to the doc today and he did have an ear infection! Thanks again for all the advice! and now the poor lil guy has cold sores all in his mouth..and nothing to give him for it

He had a high fever of 101.9 under the arm..I did give him motrin @4am last night when he woke up crying and was burning up, after about 1/2-45 mins he didnt feel warm anymore..he feels a lil warm right now, but not nearly as hot as he was yesterday and during the night. So Im hoping he is going to stay this way.
Thank you for all the responses and I did go check the Kaiser website out about teething and fevers..

Try Mortirn. Also my little guys really likes to suck on an ice cube when he is teething. Popsiclies might help to since he well be able to get them farther back in his mouth. we only give them to him when he is teething so they really make him feel better becuase he also feels special.
Hope he feels better soon.

Tylenol is not real good for relieving fevers - give him infant/child Motrin (ibprofin) - not only does infant motrin relieve fevers better, it also lasts longer so that you won't have him waking up at night feverish when the medication wears off. Your pediatrician or advice nurse will verify this is you feel you need to contact a professional. My child got her first tooth at 4 months of age and had all of her teeth, including molars, by 14 months of age - we lived on motrin for many a bad teething night.

Just as a side note (and you can look it up on any official medical website, and verify with your pediatrician) that teething does NOT cause fevers: it is an old wives tale. Chances are he just happens to be suffering from a virus at the same time he is teething - the two are unrelated. It would explain why he is so extra fussy, why his bath didn't soothe him, why the orajel doesn't seem to be helping. Regardless of if he is teething or coming down with something, the motrin will help with the fever and any aches and pains he might be suffering from if he isn't feeling well.

Are you sure he doesn't have an ear infection? Before my son got tubes he would get an ear infection with every new tooth. There's a lot of extra fluid when they teethe and sometimes it can find it's way into the ears. Just a thought. As others said, ear infections don't cause fevers higher than 100. If he's not better by Monday I'd take a trip to the pediatrician just to be sure it's not his ears.

Also, Motrin is better than Tylonol for fevers. Good luck, hope you're little guy feels better soon.

M.,

Frozen waffles are life savers for teething babies/toddlers! I would try that and also keep your child in as little clothing as possible. A diaper and onesie or just a diaper. Motrin should help with inflammation of getting the teeth and also the pain. I would do that instead of tylenol. I hope he feels better really soon!

Hi M.,

His fever is from something else other than teething. He probably got some extra germs in there since teething causes the urge to put things in his mouth. I hope he feels better! Teething fevers (which really aren't fevers at all) should be under 100 degrees otherwise it's something different. Teething may cause a slightly elevated temp. but never high enough to actually be considered a fever. How high is his temp?

Hi M.,
Check out my profile to see my experience in this area. My hubby said that at UOP dental school they told them that infants COULD experience a very low grade fever during teething, possibly due to a herpetic infection. I would take your son to his pediatrician to rule out an ear infection though. Our pediatrician told use that any fever that doesn't respond to Tylenol or Motrin should be evaluated. Make sure you are brushing his teeth, especially right before bedtime. Now is the time to start establishing good brushing habits, even if he doesn't like it. Email me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
L.

Teething should not cause a fever, there is an infection somewhere.

Hi M. (I like the spelling of your name),

I'm glad the Motrin seemed to help (it tends to work better than tylenol) but I would still call the pediatrician and get him in tomorrow. From what our doctor has told us, teething alone should not cause a fever over 100 and certainly not one that doesn't respond to a fever reducer. An ear infection on the other hand can!

My son had several ear infections between a year and 18 months and never once pulled his ear. In fact, if he hadn't had 16 teeth on his frist birthday, I would have thought he was teething with every single one. He was irritable, had a low fever, was shoving stuff in his mouth and NEVER ONCE PULLED HIS EAR!

Good luck and I hope your little guy feels better.
