Extremely High Fever for Teething?

My 2 year old suffers from tachycardia (rapid heart rate)when she has a high fever. She had another bout of 104 temp Friday and I had to keep her on Tylenol on the clock or her heart would race to 160. We recently discovered she is cutting some molars. She does have a cold and has had it for about 2 weeks, her sister is in preschool and brings her all sorts of contagious goodies. She has had a cold with runny green nose (sometimes off and on) and has never had a high temp with it. My question is, have any of your babies suffered from a very high fever 103+ over something as simple as molars or shots etc?
The last time she went through this is was because she had her shots when she had a virus, which caused a high temp and I took her to the ER(I didn't know NOT to vaccinate with a cold, I know now!). I put her through a lot of hardcore tests for them only to come out negative. (Her kidneys and bladder are fine). Her normal temp has resumed, since.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone with your replies! Her temp & heartrate resumed after her molars poked through. Now we are treating with Motrin for comfort. This is my second child and you wouldn't have guessed it, my first born never had fevers...I wish my second one came with directions! Thank you ladies so much, and have a very HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! :)

Hey M.! Just 3 days ago this happened to my son. He is 23 mo and he had a fever of 103.3. It came back the next week and lasted 2 days, then it was gone as quick as it came, and he's much better. I think it was from teething.

It is over 104 that they worry about....so as long as it stays there or under, and the Tylenol brings the fever down, I wouldn't worry!

As my pediatrician told me - new teeth cause nothing more than some discomfort, a little fussiness, and new teeth - nothing more! The rest is all wives tales; there are no proven links to earaches, fevers, or any other health issues. If your baby has a fever, then he/she needs to see the doctor - it could be an ear infection, they are going around!

My three year old when he got his first flu shot ran 105 temp. That is the worst he has ever gotten a temp before. I have never seem a baby run a fever that high for even molars. That doesnt mean that it isnt possible but I would watch it. Does she have anyother symptoms? Runny Nose Sore tHroat? There is a cold/flu going around in my area that you start out feeling yuck and then you run a fever for a day or two and then get the chills and runny nose. My hub and I both had it. You should watch for something like this because his turned into strep throat and mine turned into a very bad sinus infection. It is possible that because she is cutting her molars that has made her more likely to catch something because her immune system is not as strong. I suffer from tachycardia too so i know how scary it is. Even the littlest thing gets me anxious and my heart rate gets going. I actually had to deliever my first baby because my resting heart rate was 160. Good luck!!

I have read on babycenter.com and other parenting magazines that a low grade fever is normal with teething but a high fever is NOT. The articles (often written by doctors and/or nurses) say to give tylenol but to go to the doctor if the fever persists for 24 hours. I would call the doctor if my child's fever went over 103 especially if it is effecting the heart.

Hi- My son is just about 15 mo old now, and I have had about 3 times where he spiked a fairly high fever for no reason. He will have a fever for one day, and then the next day, it will be gone. I have asked his doctor about it and he is not sure. But, he did NOT think a high fever is caused by teething so we have no clue why it has happened. It kind of scares me that maybe something is wrong, and I dont know it.

My 3 kids never ran high fevers when teething. Discomfort maybe, but fevers no. With regards to vaccinations, you never get a shot when you're running a fever or have a cold, flu or virus. Just not a good thing. My doctor's office always had me give a dose of baby Tylenol right after the shot to help with any discomfort or slight reaction. Again, have the conversation with your pediatrician, especially in light of the tachycardia. Giving a child Tylenol when they have a high fever sounds like normal protocol unless directed differently by your pediatrician. A fever of 101 or more should warrant a call to your physician anyway. To bring an extremely high temp down, run a tepid bath and let the baby/child lay/play in the water as you wash them down. Don't use cold water, never give an alcohol bath. Again, you should talk to your pediatrician as to what's causing the high fevers and what they suggest you do. Take good care and I hope the tachycardia is a short term condition.

Don't know from personal experience about the shots since we chose not to vaccinate our kids, it just was too risky to do, but do know that teething usually made all of mine have 104 or so for a fever.

When I went to the pediatrician with my first he said that teething didn't cause fevers, but they always had fevers while teething. I asked our family doc ( an ND) and he said of course teething causes fever!

They tend to run high a couple of days and then get better!

Hi M.. I just went through this with my now 17 month old about a month ago. It started with a low fever off and on again and her being really cranky and no other signs of illness, so I figured she was teething again. About a week later she was still cranky and still not eating very well. Then about 1 1/2 weeks into this the really high fevers started. She would seem fine and then all of a sudden she would have a fever of 103.5+ (the highest was 105.5). I took her in to the doctors and they said it was a UTI. After a week on antibiotics she seemed fine until the next day after she stopped her meds. The fever returned. After many doctors visits and trips to the ER and test they found nothing wrong with her. Her blood work came back normal, urine test were normal, and a renal ultrasound were normal. On the last dr. visit he said she probably had a virus which had to just run its course and he would not be suprised if the fevers were gone within a few days. By the next day she had gone 24 hrs without a fever and we discovered 2 new molars popping through. I hope this might be of some comfort.

Hi M.,
My daughter, when she was little, she ran a high fever for a few days and I took her in. Nothing noticable going on. But a few days later she broke out in an ugly rash. It turned out to be roseola. It might be that. Come to think of it, my son had that too. Good luck. It is no fun when our little ones are not feeling well.

A fever of 103-104 is not too high for a toddler. Infants and toddlers get higher fevers than adults and tolerate them well. She will be happier if you keep it down with Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Tachycardia is a natural response to fever that everyone, including adults, gets. 160 for a toddler is normal with a fever like that. Her heart rate will come down as the fever comes down. As far as teething, I've never seen a child get a fever from teething, though many believe this happens. Vaccines frequently cause fevers to 104, that's why it is recommended to give Tylenol right before getting the vaccine, then continue it for 24 hours.

Yup, two teeth, two fevers over 103. We give tylenol and motrin and it helps. We also offer lots of cool teethers to help with the fever and cuddles so she feels better. Check with your pediatrician about what you can give and how often, but little ones can run hotter than an adult without it being a problem. The rapid heart rate comes along with the fever too.

There are some people in this world that "spike" fevers. Some do it until they are two or so and others do it until their about 7 years old. The doctors don't know why and in my daughters case, we were given phenobarbital (SP). They will run really high fevers for little to no reason and then of course when there is a reason the fevers are Really High. I did this as a baby and my daughter spiked fevers until she was 7 although she was a very healthy, happy, active child. Just remember to watch for them, and give cool baths and try to keep them calm with the tylenol. I hope this helps.

M., My oldest daughter would always run a very high temp when cutting her teeth. especially her year old molars. She also had a terrible time cutting teeth. She had gums like leather, one of them they finally lanced so it could come on through.
Hope this helps...they always have me alternate with Tylenol and Advil every three hours. This kills the pain and keeps the fever under control.
Does shelike to get in the bath...give her a very luke warm bath to bring the fever down but not chill her.L.

Yes cutting teeth can cause a fever.. never seen one that high with my 5 but I am sure all kids are different...and Molars are harder to cut so I would guess that's why the high fever and shots also are notorious for causing fevers but agian we have never had one that high and I no longer Vax right now... getting shots while sick use to be frowned upon becasue of the higher reaction rates and maybe your DD is just one of those kids.. hard to say but if you had the standard battery of tests i would guess she is just one the "lucky" kids Becky

Cutting teeth does not cause high fevers. They can cause mild fevers, but all the legitimate sources indicate that teething can not cause high fevers. Thus, high fevers should be brought to a doctor's attention. My son ran a temp as high as 104 a few times and it's always been caused by something other than teething (e.g., ear infection and sinus infection). My son, however, did have a very rough time when cutting his teeth. His gums got extremely swollen with some and he got blood blisters under some of them. When two of his molars came through he had bleeding with them (he would drool bright red blood and I noticed that there were blood spots by the molars so it was definitely the gums bleeding when the molars were pushing through.) He never, got more than a low grade temp during any of his teething though. I would have your doctor carefully check nose and ears. Sometimes the infections are hard for some doctors to see until they are pretty extreme infections. You are doing the right thing by giving tylenol to keep the temp down though. Hope you find an answer to what is causing the high temps.

Hi M. - my 18 month old son ran a fever between 101-104.9 for 3 days. I spoke with 3 different doctors who all basically said to let it run itself out. He did not have any other symptoms. Since he was not lethargic and actually had periods of normal toddler behavior, they were not too concerned. They did say that if it went to 105 we should take him to the ER. He was cutting about 6 teeth at the time. I would still call your doc, if you can - or does your insurance company have a nurse line? They were very helpful for me. I hope she feels better quickly!
