My Kids always seemed to have the runny nose and a slight fever. I gave them some baby tylenol recommended by my doctor and orajel for their sore gums. Teething rings, just anything to help them out.

OK moms... What has been your experience with teething? This is my second child and with the first we heard all the horrors of teething - fussing, crying, chewing, etc. My question is this... Did you experience runny nose and/or fever? I know many moms swear that their child(ren) had runny nose & fever when teething, and of course the doctors say that teething does not cause those symptoms. So tell me, what was your experience? Our son will be 8 months on Sunday and is teething like a mad man, but no break-thru yet, and he has had a runny nose for what seems like forever now. Been to the Dr. for it and various other things, and there are no other cold/allergy symptoms, so I'm wondering if moms' experiences will surpass Dr. "expertise," LOL. I did have a pharmacist friend confirm that his kids noses ran like faucets when they were teething. So, are "faucets" and/or fever common? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

My son has had a runny nose and a fever with teething. He has had a terrible time. Some doctors agree that it is with teething, so it isn't across the board that they say no it's not related. My advice is try tylenol or ibuprofen. Especially right before bedtime, it will help him sleep longer through the night. My son teethed for like 4 months before his teeth finally started breaking through. Some kids just have a terrible time.
Looks like you're getting varied answers, but all 3 of my boys had cold-like symptoms with teething. My oldest's pediatrician said that it was an old-wives tale. My pediatrician now said that it was coincidence. However, all the old wives I knew (including my mom) told me that they'd seen the same thing in their kids.
I have to agree with Tamara, it is prob a small virus that is occuring at the same time. They are exposed to SO much the first year. That is what most likely causes the diarea and diper rash too.
The runny nose may be from extra crying :(
Don't worry children usually run a low grade fever and have a runny nose when teething. It is very common and nothing to worry about. Both of my kids ages 9 and 4 had fevers and terrible runny noses most of the time.
We are going through that right now! My daughter is getting her 1 year molars and is "runnung like a faucet" like you said. I have heard that fever is common too and when my son was teething he had really runny stools. You are right, doctors say all those things are not symptoms but all bodies are different and you as a mom know your child the best!
With my first 2 the only way I knew they were teething was by the runny nose and slight fever they had, they were very easy teethers none of that really seemed to bother them, The next 2 came to me past the teething age, and then my 5th son was your typical horror story, looking back it was comical, I had no clue what was going on, I honestly thought something horrible was going on with him( a couple months previous he had been in the hospitol for pnuemonia, but he had been lethargic that time, and then a month or so prior to that he had a hernia operation) anyways when my husband got home he informed me he was just teething that that was how one of the 2 who aren't mine teethed (all children belong to my husband) and he literally laughed at me, he felt I should have known this, but the older two were easy so I had no clue, after the first teeth broke he only did the runny nose and fever, and the same has beed true with number 6 and 7, I think when something can't be explained medically doctors just discount what us moms see happening, would I discount it could be a cold, no, it is that time of year, but I also wouldn't discount it to the fact that your daughter is teething. Most expierenced moms will tell you that it does happen, we have seen it with our own eyes. Sorry it is so long just though people might enjoy a funny story to go with it!
My 1 son had the fever and runny nose untill the tooth cut thur and then the fever and runny nose was gone untill it was time for the next ones to come in. My daughter and my other son didn't show any signs of cutting teeth.
My son's nose use to run a lot when he was teething. I've heard it from other people too so I doubt it's just coincidence for all of us. Occassionally as the teeth were breaking through he'd get a slight fever, but very rarely. I think it was the teething causing these things...there were no other reasons evident.
I havent read the other comments V. but wow, my son will be 2 here in the next couple weeks and he is getting in his 2 year molars...he has been teething since he was 3 months old and cut his first tooth when he was 4 months old. Every time he has cut teeth he runs a fever and has cold like symptoms. I was told by my family doctor that the swelling that occurs when he is cutting teeth effects his sinuses and that is why he always has a runny nose and cough. Cuz if it isnt draining out his nose than its going down his throat. The only thing I have ever used was teething tablets and motrin, you can use these together. It relieved alot of his symptoms. Hope this helps and good luck to you. Merry Christmas.... =) J.
my daughters nose ran for 3 months straight, and yes she did have a fever. her pediatrician said that was normal, so i am curious whose info is incorrect? she has 20 teeth, and is 20 months old. everyone one that came had a fever and runny nose. hope this helps?
When both of my girls were teething they both ran low-grade fevers and had "faucets". I think that it is very very common for this to happen. I had a friend who's a doctor tell me "off the record" that it's not a big deal and not to worry unless the fever gets very high or if the snot turns color. If I was you I wouldn't worry to much. I do know how fun it is to have a teething baby around. I feel for you. Just be glad that your baby doesn't have terrible bleeding diapar rash too...that's what my youngest had with it and she is now 8 years old and still has scars on her little tushie because of it. Good luck and I hope things get better with teething.
I disagree with the doctors. My daughter has a runny nose and fever and hed her tooth pop through that night. It wasn't a really high fever, but of course the doc said it didn't have anything to do with teething. The next day both the fever and the runny nose were gone.
I do think teething causes a runny nose. Fever - I'm not sure. I do know that some of my children have had fevers coincide with teething, but I don't know if it was something else that just happened at the same time. My kids will also tug at their ears when teething.
I am a mom of three children. My older two ages 9 and 6 both had fever along with teething. I did as well when I was a child. I do not know about the runny nose. My son will be 8 months on the 20th, also no break through yet. He is always pulling his ears and his cheeks are red at times. I assume this is from teething since there seems to be nothing else wrong. I think moms surpass the doctors in my family. Fever and teething go hand in hand in my family.
NO! I am a Mom that agrees with the Dr. on this one. Teething does not cause those symptoms! Usually is a virus/allergies that happens to be the same time as teething, because the child is ALWAYS teething.
Hope this will help you My middle child would get ear infection with every time he teethed. It came with all the stuff fever runny stuff noses you name it. My youngest would get no stop runny noses that would last forever as soon as the teeth would break through the runny nose would be gone it just seemed like it would take forever for them to come through. I just tried all the runny nose/stuffy nose medicines until I found one that work. Good luck.
I don't know about other moms, but both my boys experienced runny noses and fevers while they were teething.
I don't know why Drs. insist that teething can't support a fever. Maybe it doesn't cause it, but it sure does make the environment ripe for it. My son only HAD fevers when he was teething. He teethed 4 teeth at one time, once, and his fever was 103/104 for a few days. Also, the drippy nose thing, is entirely on target. Iburpofin really helped my son. Otherwise, he was very miserable. Also, you can do that switch between Ibuprofin and Tylenol. But, it's still worth calling his Dr. again, if thing progress or he gets a fever. Keep the liquids available and plentiful.

My son had a runny nose and fever with almost every single tooth. We heard the same thing from the "experts" that they weren't related, and the same thing from friends that they were!
With my oldest, she had the runny nose and a slight fever, but it didn't really bother her. My 2nd, we didn't even know she was teething because she still slept good and didn't really have any 'signs' that she was teething. Now with my son, who's 8 months old, he has a slightly runny nose and has a couple of fussy days before the tooth cuts thru. I've done the infant tylenol at bed time and during the day I make sure he has all kinds of things to chew on. Baby Oragel (sp?) would help too. Good luck! I know what you're going thru right now! :)
Hi, yes runny noses, red butts and a host of other things went on when my boys were teething. Sweet relief comes in the form of "Hylands Teething tablets" this wonderful homeopathic remedy is awesome. Tablets melt in their mouth, may help with runny noses, but it sure helps with their mood. Also, if you can find a book on "Reflexology" there are certain points you can touch "very gently" for the little ones that can help turn off the faucet or at least make them more comfortable (the bases of the toes, where they attach to the foot are good "sinus" points. Just stroke lightly with your finger. Also, if it's clear it's good, if the runny stuff is thick, reduce dairy, cheese, etc intake.
Good luck,
G.
