Sleeping in Swings and Car Seats

My son doesn't sleep much unless we rock him. He loves movement.Sometimes I have to put him in the swing to sleep and if I try taking him out to put him in his crib he usually wakes up - so now I let him take naps in the swing. However I am concerned about spinal development from sitting in a chair/swing. I am also interested in buying a more "natural" swing like a hammock you hang from the ceiling. The plastic swing was given to us by a relative and want to avoid more plastic. Any advice/suggestions?

What can I do next?

The Amby bed is great. It is JPMA certified and recommended by Dr. Sears. My little one loved it. It is like an enclosed hammock and when the baby wakes and moves, it will swing gently from side to side or front to back and soothe them back to sleep. It was the only way to get my little one asleep when she was very little. I had a friend recently whose second child is not a good sleeper and I lent her the amby bed and it worked like a treat. You can order on line from www.amby.com or do a google search.

Hola Mujer!
I found that walking around the house a bit with Lillian in the Maya Wrap put her out like a light. Then I could set her onto a bed or into a crib for a nap (while still in the mayawrap) and then unwrap and release myself, and use the mayawrap itself to wrap her up. Not as jarring as lifting her out of something and putting her somewhere else.
Oh - and I've heard thtat the Amby bed is good too... thinking about getting one for #2 - due in October.

oh my gosh L., i was about to ask the same question on mamasource. my 6 month old (today already!) will only nap in her swing or the car seat-which is also the stroller for now. her bassinet was on a rocking chair and now that she is in a crib, she will just not nap there. at night she is fine-she'll even sleep 12 hours in a row sometimes. she basically just takes one long 3 to 4 hour nap per day and then has one long night. i'll be reading your responses but just know that you are not alone. i pad the swing with lots of blankets or if we just go for a stroller ride where she does not need to be strapped in, i do the same with the car seat--if that little advice helps. take care. ;-) A.

Hi L., this sounds very typical for an infant. They do love movement however you are right, the swing isn't the best for his back. I didn't get a swing so I can't recommend one.

However, what I can recommend is a book (quick read) called the Happiest Baby on the Block. This really helped us with our infant son.

Children are creatures of habit; once you get them used to something they will want it always. If you don't want him to fall asleep in the swing than try other things. It's tough though because you need a break too. Try the book.

I hope that helps.
