Seeking Advice on Scabies Treatment

Hello all! I am the mother of a wonderfully adorable 5 1/2 month old son, and work full time at a hospital. Unfortunately, I recently got scabies (an infection from mites) from a patient at the hospital. I've treated myself and my husband, but my pediatrician seemed reluctant to let me treat my son (scabies is incredibly contagious, and incredibly itchy on the skin). She says that we should wait until he shows signs of the disease first, rather than pre-emtively treating him like we do adults. However, sometimes symptoms don't show up for up to 6 weeks!! I'm wondering if any other mom's out there were in this position (ie faced with the decision of treating their asymptomatic child) and what they did....Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

My first husband who also worked in a hospital. We also had an incident with scabies. Out infant son got them too.

I would complain that my son didn't sleep for long periods and everyone would tell me it was because he was a newborn (if I remember correctly much younger than your son. He was too young to scratch or communicate what was bothering him. I couldn't really notice the "Rash", but we took him in and had it diagnosed. Everyone was treated with Quell (sp?. I washed every washable thing in the house and left on a vacation.

My son was able to nap regularly and was so much more comfortable after the treatment. I say if you got scabies, EVERYONE in the house should have been treated. I would worry about reinfestation.

If your doctor won't prescribe for your son, seek a pediatric dermatologist specialist or just another doctor to help you. I remember just how uncomfortable it was and what a HUGE difference it made in my son's comfort.

Visit NAET.com and learn about this procedure. NAET practitioners can treat infants BY PROXY (i.e., through you or your husband so long as child is in skin to skin contact with the child). You may want to consult with Dr. David Karaba at the East West Medical Group in Fullerton.

Have you tried researching a homeopathic or alternative treatment for the baby, or even yourself? Here is a link I found about scabies and it lists a couple of different treatments for it. Good luck!

Been quite a while (I'm a gramma) but I did have a five year old contract scabies without it spreading to her sister or parents.
I think your pedi is giving good advice. No need to put a fairly strong substance on your baby untill it shows up. It might not.
bye

I would seek the advice of a dermatologist, I remember when one of my kids had the same symptoms, our pediatrician said it was Scabies, he referred us to a dermotologist and he said it wasn't scabies but exzema in other words really bad dry skin turns out other people on my hubbys side of the family had the same thing as a kid. the dermotologist gave me some free sample size creams I didn't have to pay for them that way and he also told me to not bathe my kids to much in a week he said a maximum of 3 times a week will be good and he also told me to use Cetaphil cream on my kids when they get out of the bath so I did that and it cleared up in about 2 weeks. they are now a little older now and when I give my kids a bath I check their skin when I dry them off and if I feel any dry skin I still use the cetaphil cream on them it rehydrates their skin. talk to a dermatologist if you don't know one ask your pediatrician to refer you to one, hope this helps.

Hello M.,
My daughter contracted scabies @ 4 months old from the babysitters dog. She broke out with very small bites on her arm and the Dr said it was a heat rash. A few weeks later she had a rash all over her body. We took her to a dermatologist and he checked one of her bites/bister under a microscope and came back frantic because we brought her to his office. He said she was very contagious with scabies. He gave her a cream Rx and gave us a large bottle of Rx lotion. He even had his nurse walk us out and she had to press the elevator button and as we were walking out his other nurse was spraying the sitting are with lysol. We then had to go home wash everthing we had touched everyday, place all her stuffed animals in baggies for about a week. Take in mind we had no symptons only my daughter did but the Dr said every one who came in contact with her was infected. My daughters cream did not seem to be working fast enough for us so once a day I would rub our lotion on her. Her rash was gone in about a week and all of her fussing had stopped. Hope this helps you.
Good Luck,
D.

Hi,
Try the health food or whole food store and find a soap or cleanser with tea tree oil. Using tea tree oil may keep any symptoms from showing up. My daughter-in-law is a nurse and was exposed to scabies while she was pregnant, she used tea tree oil products and had no symptoms. Homeopathic treatments are often best.
