Nightime Diaper Leaking

My daughter always wakes up with wet PJs and a soaked sheet. I use Pampers Baby Dry diapers and they seemed to be working but now every night she leaks. Does anyone else have this problem or can you recommend a solution? Besides the hassle of changing the bed, I'm afraid that she gets cold and uncomfortable. Thank you!

So What Happened?

I took the advice and tried the Huggies. There was still some leakage so I went to the Pampers overnights and went up a size (thanks for that recommendation!) and there have been NO leaks with those! Thanks so much for all of the advice.

Another vote for Huggies Overnights! My son started soaking through those for a while as well so we put a pair of cotton training underwear (the thick padded cotton ones) over the overnight diaper and that did the trick.

Another vote for Huggies overnights! They've been a life saver! Pampers now makes an Overnight diaper as well as an extra absorbency type diaper too.

We found training pants in the One Step Ahead catalog. They help my son to stay dry at night even if his diaper leaks. These have been a real help-they're soft and comfy, and they help keep the bedding dry, too! They also have sheet protectors which have come in real handy.

I have always used Pampers diapers with my children, but not the Baby Dry, the Swaddlers then Cruisers. I now the Cruisers are a bit more, but are far as absorbtion they are great. And I have put them to the test! They seem to be able to soak up anything that comes their way. My oldest would sleep for 10-12 hours at night. She'd wake up with a huge swollen diaper, but no leaks!

My son had the same problem. Very annoying, isn't it? We like Huggies so we use the Huggies for night time that are extra absorbant. Then he got a little older and then he was even peeing through those so we now add a liner I get from BRU. They're something like $3.50 for a package of 30. My friend told me she added a maxi pad to her son's diaper to give extra absorbancy. It's really the same principle. A tip for you, if you're going to use the night time diapers, go up a size because they absorb even more. Just make sure you fasten them really well and you will get even more absorbancy power. Then if the night time diaper alone is leaking, add the liner. We've had very good luck with the combo. We maybe have an accident once every couple of weeks, and that's mostly because we probably could have put it on better, where before we were having it happen all the time.

Hi M.....my daughter who will be 13 months on the 12th has been waking up wet since she was 8 months and our solution was huggies night time diapers. I am a faithfull pampers user but I have found that the huggies night time works the best for her at night and have not had a problem since. Good luck. ~K.

You may want to try going up to the next size. That was always the sign for me to put my little ones in a bigger diaper. Hope that helps!

Hi M.,

I had the same problem - what we do at home is I buy 2 different diapers. Both are Pampers, durning the day my little girl (18 months)is in the size 3 crawlers by Pampers (I'm forgetting the actual name of them, but they are the ones with a snugger fit) and then at night we moved her up to a size 4 Baby Dry by Pampers. It seems to have helped to put a bigger sized diaper on her at night, I guess it holds a little more? Since moving her up a next size we haven't had any issues with leaks at night. Also, I've seen now Pampers has an overnight diaper - haven't tried it since the system I explained has been working. Hope this helps - good luck!! :)

When my daughter (now 26 mos) started doing this right around the age your daughter is, we solved it by doing the following: for night time, we went up to size 4 diapers, folded from front down and made sure it was pulled up high enough on her belly. If you daughter is a stomach sleeper, all the pee pools to the front and the absorbant lining goes up to the top of the diaper so it leaks out there on the sheets and PJs. Also, Huggies stay drier on the outside of the diaper than Pampers (I use Pampers for my 10 mo old son so I can tell the two diapers apart quickly).

Good luck!

As many others have noted, Huggies Overnites are terrific! They do cost more, but I think that it is worth it! We use them for overnight, longer car rides, and outings where I know it will be difficult to change a diaper! They sell them at certain Targets, Jewel, Babies R Us, and Diapers.com.

going up a size in diapers usually does the trick for us. also, it seems you're getting a lot of diaper brand recommendations, so i thought i'd throw in that we use nature baby diapers - target online and babies r us carry them. we chose them bc they're 60% biodegradable and always assumed that the regular brands worked better. but we have realized (when we vacation and use huggies or whatever the local grocery store carries) that the nature baby diapers work so much better than anything else. boy were we surprised! it may just be that they fit our son best, i've heard that's an issue, but we rarely have problems when we use them, though we seem to have a few every vacation when we're not using them.

Huggies Overnights!! They work wonderfully for my 18 month old who sleeps an average of 12 hours a night... no leaks! She wears Luvs during the day to save $$ (since I change her often during the day), and then gets a Huggies Overnight at bedtime. Good luck!

I tried to glance over all of the posts and didn't see this reponse. When my daughter went through this phase, I simply used one of my maxi-pads (I could never find those inserts people spoke of...believe me, I looked). When I secured her diaper shut, I placed the sticky side to the inside of the diaper (non-sticky side obviously to her skin...like a belt). She always seemed to flip on her tummy and pee would go up the front. It did the trick for me, and this didn't last too long anyway.

Also, I bought a second mattress pad and double-up (mattress pad, fitted sheet, mattress pad, fitted sheet). That way if there's an accident in the middle of the night, there's not too much disruption and chaos. I just pull the top pad and sheet off, and baby can go back to sleep. Good luck! Hope you find what works for you.

Like a lot of the posts, we started using the Huggies Overnights. We still occassionally have wet PJ's in the AM, but that's usually when he wears two piece PJ sets and the band from the pants gets caught in the diaper. OTher than that issue, the overnigth diapers are great!

You can also try limiting the amount of liquid she has before bed. Good luck!

We used diaper doublers (a liner that you place in the diaper). We found them at Toys R Us but they were always in short supply (only 1 or 2 packages). You could see if she's wet before you go to bed too, and change her again then.

We tried everything for this issue for about 3 weeks...Huggies Overnights are the best! I swear by them! She was in a 3 when we started so we bought size 4 overnights. she is now in a 4 diaper and we still use 4 overnights....they keep her PJ's dry and pull that moisture off her and into the diaper too...WIN WIN! :)

My daughter always leaked because she slept 12 hours straight. I would put a poise pad in the middle of the diaper (pampers) and one across the front and one across the back of the diaper, yes it sounds crazy to use 3 a night but I was soooo very tired of wet jammies nad changing sheets and washing sheets everyday. I also made sure she finished any liquids an hour before bedtime.

Good luck it is a pain!!

My daughter used to have the same problem but it was when she was still on breast milk/formula. We would put her to bed with two diapers...one in front and one in back. It worked.
Another thing to think about is how much water or milk she is having before bed...maybe try stopping her drinking at a certain time and see if that helps.

When my kids started leaking through their diapers I knew it was time to go up to the next size. (Even if they still fit in the weight requirements for the current diaper. I also use LUVS. I hated pampers after their "swaddlers" (which I love). I was not a big huggies fan either but I know alot of people recommend them.

I use huggies night time diapers and my 23 month old son rarely goes through those. I do notice of course the nights he drinks more before bed, the more likely he is to go through his diaper. So we begin to lessen the amount of liquid he has as it gets closer to bedtime.
Also a friend of mine just uses 2 regular diapers. Cut a hole in the first one, which allows it to first soak up the 2nd diaper, then the extra fills up the 2nd...

Hi M.,

I'm glad you posted this question because we're going through the same issue and I look forward to reading your replies.

I don't have a diaper solution however, we use a vinyl sheet cover that's wipeable to protect our matress pad that protects our matress. The wipeable vinyl makes it easy to switch out the sheet during the night. We just spray the vinyl sheet with Clorox CleanUp and wipe dry; then put on a clean sheet. This also helps when you're potty training during the preschool years. My kids are 2,5, & 7 and they all still have these sheets over their matress pads just in case they have an accident at some point. They sell them at Walmart/K-Mart/Target in twin, full, queen & king sizes. They start at $7.00-$18.00 for King.

Meijer carries a vinyl matress cover for a crib. see below link.

There is extra absorbency Pampers now. But, in my experience, when the diaper isn't holding it in over night it is time to move to the next size up.

Also, when my daughter was learning to stay dry through the night someone suggested "puppy pee pads" to put underneath her to avoid changing sheets all the time. You could try that for your little one.
