1-Year-old Leaking Every Night

Every morning my daughter wakes up and her diaper has leaked through. We have tried different diapers and giving her a bottle earlier and waiting a half hour to change her diaper before putting her down. This has been occurring the last few weeks and the only time it didn't was the other night when she was too tired for a bottle and went right to bed. I'm not sure what to try next. She's in size 4 but is on the lower end of the weight requirement. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

So What Happened?

I was so grateful to receive all the helpful hints to curb a leaking nighttime diaper. They all seemed so simple, too! I decided to try one at a time. I went up a size, but that was actually a disaster. She woke up at 3:30 am with her diaper dripping. I think it was just too big. I hadn't heard of Huggies Overnights because my Target doesn't carry them. I bought some at Wal-Mart and we all enjoyed the first dry night in weeks! She was dry for five nights and leaked just a little last night. Thank you all so much for your advice! Next time I won't wait two weeks to ask for help.

My littlest is like a fountain and I found that Huggies Nighttimes, one size larger than he needs, is the only way to keep the bed dry at night.

If you don't want to double up on disposable diapers or spend extra on the overnight diapers, here is another idea if moving up a diaper size doesn't work. Buy some cloth training pants and plastic pants and put these on over the regular disposable diaper. There are also the combination vinyl training pants - cotton on the inside and vinyl on the outside. You'd probably be able to buy enough for a weeks worth for the same amount it would cost for a couple packages of overnight diapers and you'd be able to use the training pants for a year or more!

Good luck!

I have seen people double up on the diapers. Tear a small hole in the center of the inside diaper and then put another one over the top. I know it is using a lot of diapers but it seemed to work for one of my friends with a special needs child who tended to leak. Good luck!

Whenever this happened to us, it signaled that they needed to be in the next size up. Dont pay attention too much to weight thing on the package. Try the next size and see, it always worked for us. Good luck

My son was born 4 years to the day we were married as well! If you haven't tried already, Huggies Overnites were the only diapers that prevented nighttime leaking for us. You can't find them everywhere though--our best bet was Walmart. Best wishes!

I usually get a bigger size to put on at night. Try a size 5 and I'm sure it will work great.

I had this same problem with my son when he was younger. I had to buy the Huggies Overnights. They are a little pricey but you only 1 a day so they last long. They worked great and he never peed thru them at night. Hope this helps.

Have you tried Huggies Overnights? There is a pull-up version of an overnight too. They also have a big kid overnight where it goes up to 65lbs. or something. I started with Huggies Overnights and they work! I give my kids sippy cups of about 4oz of water to go to bed with and the Overnights still work!

My twins did that too at this age. I put them in diapers and then put those plastic-covered training pants on them in a larger size over the top of the diapers. The training pants caught whatever leaked out of the diapers.

I had this same exact problem for a while. I tried some different diapers and finally bought a package of the Huggies "Overnights". They have a purple package. I got them at Target. They have worked so far! I haven't had one leak since. Give them a try! My daughter is size 4 as well, but weighs probably 24 lbs.

I would bump her up to a size 5 diaper- at least for the night time. I don't go by the weight requirements on the box since all kid are different with their "output". =) my kids grew out of diapers before their weight limit. and the last thing I want to do is change my kids' diapers, clothes, and possibly sheets in the middle of the night. good luck!

I had that problem with my daughter.. may sound wierd.. but I used the "over nights" for bigger kids.. The sides are like pullups but they hold alot more.. They worked great for me just until we could get her to stop. Better then cleaning sheets every morning & having a wet kids every morning. Hope it helps you.

I thought I would also tell you that the huggies overnights were great for us. My son is just over 2 now and we are working on potty training. He wakes up dry almost every day. We went through him soaking every night so, it doesn't mean it will make potty training hard. It must be something they kind of outgrow!

We used the "overnight" diapers. I think they are Huggies. My daughter was also on the low end of the weight range and this was a problem for us for awhile. These diapers solved it. You also may need to go up a size in diapers -- the front should come up pretty high. Normally the larger size will come up quite a bit higher in the front, which will also fix this problem for girls. You can also stop the bottle at one. Good luck!

Do not go by the weight requirements of the diapers. My daughter is only 20lbs and is 14 months, and we are in Size 5 Pampers diapers for the very same reason.

When my daughter leaks we go to the next size--we never go by the weight. Sometimes during the day we put her in size 4's because I can keep an eye on the leakage.

Good Luck!

My daughter who is 18 months had the same problem and what I have been doing is putting her in a diaper 1 size bigger than what she is in and that has worked. She normally is in a size 3 and I put her in a size 4 at night time. Try putting her in a size 5 at night. I use Luv's diapers and they work great!!!

My daughter had the same problem, we used Huggie's Goodnights - they are little bit more expensive, but you only use 1 per day because we only used them at night time. They really did help out a lot and as she got older we cut back on liquids before bed, it use to be a glass of milk she would take to bed (yeah i know bad habit) but once we took my son who is older to the doctor we told them no more milk before bed and only water. Now both of my children take water cups to bed but both are waking up hardly wet if at all. We have since quit using the Huggies overnights, and now use regular Pampers on my daughter.

Hope this helps!

Both of my kids went through something similar at different ages. What I eventually did was change them in the middle of the night. But my kids are both heavy sleepers so they'd stay asleep during the changing. I'd even do it in the crib with the lights off so they wouldn't be too disturbed by the changing. And even if they do wake up, they are still so sleepy that they'd just roll over and fall back asleep! Not sure if this method would work for your child, but maybe worth a try! ??? Either that or try tucking a towel in across the matress to help soak up any leaks during the night so your not changing bedding every day. I know how old that gets! Good luck!

Good question L.!! I have been double diapering my son since he was 1, he is currently age 2..and we have the same problem! And he just has a sippy of milk every night before bed and still, even double diapered, wakes up wet alot of mornings! I am a pampers lover so thats all we use, I`ve tried others and they are even worse in the morning. I don`t have an answer for you but wanted to let you know your not alone in the fight against wetness! Sometimes wonder how they can go that much when there sleeping..or is something wrong?? My son is very healthy so I guess he just goes alot at night..it`s going to make potty training a bit harder that`s for sure! Good luck!

We met this challenge with both our daughters and found that every parent/child goes through this stage. What we did to get through it with a bit less laundry was bought Huggies Overnights jsut for night time----they really do hold more that a regular diaper. Then when the stage was at its worst we would set and alarm for about 2-3 am and go into our daughters room and gently change her diaper while she slept. She rarely became fully awake and the couple times she did it was a simple lullaby and running fingers through her hair to put her back to sleep. I know it seems a bit unsettling right now to have this challenge but it too is just a phase and she will move past it. The best thing is to remain calm and do all that you can to help her/love her through it. Just think of how yucky it must be for her to wake soaked everyday (and the poor quality of sleep she must be getting during the time she still is sleeping but is soaked). I shure wouldn't like that feeling. Hope this helps, hang in there. SAHM of 2 beautiful daughters (2 and 4) who along with thier father/my husband of 7 years are the light of my life.

Huggies Overnights have been our salvation! We have used them for both of our older kids when they started leaking at night, luckily it happens when they are in size 4s, because that is the size the Overnights start in. We get them at Walmarts (not all of them have them) and Target stores. Hope this helps!

Don't pay attention to the weights on the diapers. Generally when they start leaking it is time to move them up a size. Both my kids have never fit into the weights on the diapers it just depends on the fit. I have a five month old in size 4, for example. They are both really tall. So I would move up a size and you should be good to go.

Hello,

We went through this too. We found the only diaper that would hold our daughter was LUVS. And even then she would sometimes leak through at night. Now we are going through this with our son. If I make sure I change him by 6 AM then he doesn't leak through......

But I also started changing her half way through the night. She hardly even woke up for it. Just make sure you put jammies on her that are easy to do this with. And if you get up for any reason in the middle of the night just go change her.

She will outgrow this.

Huggies Overnights! We used them for close to 2 years, and I think we only had them leak through once or twice. Regular diapers our daughter would leak through almost every night, even if we went up a size at night in a regular diaper. Spending slightly more for the Overnights diapers is worth the money! You'll spend less time changing wet clothes, changing dirty sheets, and doing laundry, plus you'll save money on laundry, too. I highly recommend the Huggies Overnights, and usually I used Members Mark (Sam's Club), Luvs, or occasionally Huggies during the day. They come in size 4, 5, and some places you can find them in a 6. My nephew wears them now, too, because he soaks through regular diapers overnight like he's not even wearing a diaper. They work well for him, too.
