Need a Maternity Evening Gown.

I am attending a wedding at the end of December in Chicago. This is a black tie affair in which an evening gown is needed. I am 6 mo. pregnant with my second child and am wondering where to go to look for such a dress. I am a pretty casual person by nature, and the whole event has me a little worked up. Any suggestions on where to start?

What can I do next?

You're lucky for the time of year. Motherhood and many other maternity stores will come out with their holiday collections any time now. They often have attractive, reasonably priced maternity gowns. Good luck!

Isabella oliver has great dresses that are super cute and last through many pregnancies. I have had 4 babies back to back and have had a few pieces from Isabella Oliver that have lasted through all pregnancies. Good luck!

My daughter and one of her friends were pregnant when they had their weddings. My daughter bought her dress at David's bridal. As I remember they did some alterations for free or at a very reasonable price. She had a traditional floor length white dress with a veil.

Her friend's wedding was less formal but she wore a floor length loose fitting shift that she bought at a regular store. I think she went up a size or 2. The dress did not have a waistline seam and was sleeveless. She wore a shawl with it. The material was soft and shiny.

I have seen women wear fitted knit dresses that would expand with their body. They are more form fitting but the women still looked lovely. Buy it in a flattering dark color and dress it up with jewelry. Target has really nice jewelry very reasonably priced.

If you or someone you know sews they could stitch up a fancy fabric into a shift dress in a short period of time. It could be A-line or more straight. There would be 3 seams for the dress its self and either sleeves or not and a collar or not. If you don't put in sleeves and a collar it could be made in 3-4 hours. You can make the neckline in any shape you'd like. If you're concerned about being chilly You could add a shawl or a purchased bolero type jacket. Shiny gold, silver, and black or white with gold and silver are in style. David's Bridal has formal looking shawls.

Another idea is to wear black pants and a sexy looking top. I've seen pregnant women wear a camisole and put a shiny formal looking blouse over it. Choose a dark color that will blend with the pants.

If you're not a part of the wedding party or a relative you can wear a more casual outfit dressed up with jewelry and no one will notice or care. If you're concerned about looking appropriate and if you know any one in the bridal group you could call and talk it over with them.

S.,

I have a bridesmaids dress from David's Bridal I wore in a wedding when I was 8 months pregnant. It is empire waist and long and flowy. I still had to get it altered to fit a pregnant figure. It turned out very flattering. It is a pink/fuschia color. If you can't find anything and are interested, I could send you a pic and would sell it to you for very cheap. You still might have to get it altered. I live in NE Portland.

Check out www.isabellaoliver.com - gorgeous, hip stuff and sales are great too. Some of the stuff can be worn post pregnancy as well, esp if you are on the more petite site in general - they have gorgeous wrap dresses for example and you can find great stuff under $200. They are really good about returns.

Try Motherwear stores or Pea In The Pod online. www.expressiva.com might be helpful too. Depending on how much you're showing you might be able to find a non-maternity gown with an empire waist and a full skirt that would work.

I had to get clothes for an in-laws' wedding when I was pregnant. Have you tried "Generations"? It is a maternity store on SE Hawthorne Blvd at about 43rd or so. They used to have some nice outfits for dressing up.

Biggest advice: be comfortable! you have an excuse to wear whatever you want and you will look great.

Hi, S.--

Not sure where you are located, but I saw a beautiful black maternity gown on display at Baby and Me on Hwy 99 this week. Not sure what else they might have in stock, but I bet you could call. Also, have you checked with Motherhood Maternity? I remember buying the most beautiful fancy sheer top with shawl there when I was pregnant. If price isn't a big deal, someone told me that Mimi Maternity has some fun evening wear. Generations near Hawthorne is great, too, and they could steer you in the right direction if they don't have what you need. Best of luck and I hope you have a great time!

I would try Davids Bridals. They have lots of dress to choose from and many with an empire waist which would work well for a prenant momma. Or, even a simple black dress from Macy's might work. They also had a ton when I was there a month ago.

Try Motherhood maternity. They have stores in most malls, they are in both the Troutdale and Woodburn outlet mall, and you can also buy online. They have a little black dress for as low as $20.

Congratulations first off! So here are just a few ideas for you to try out. I am not sure what your budget for this event is, but it will probably just be worn once so I am under the assumption that you do not want to spend too much.
DAVID'S BRIDAL; they carry Very Formal gowns, aside from weddings also and you can choose to have it tailored or not. You can go in and ask to see the ones on sale. I have known people to get them for less than $100.00 here
JCPENNY'S has huge sales going almost all the time on gowns. If you go in and they are over $40, try again the next week. They may not be in the Maternity section when they go on sale, but if you get one in a plus size that fits loosely on your tummy, and you pay less than $40 you can easily get it tailored to fit the rest of your body fairly reasonably if necessary. They also carry very nice Maternity dresses that are also very resonably priced. I am just not sure how formal a gown you are comfortable wearing.
TARGET; Also has Maternity and non maternity that is resonably priced and ranging from dressy to somewhat formal. I hope that these help you some and that you have a wonderful time at the event.
Peaceful wishes,
~M.
