Hi Ladies,
My husband is the best man at a black tie wedding in NYC (on a boat). I unfortunately will have to buy something to wear but I'm not sure what. I have never been to that formal an affair and maybe whatever I wear I'll never wear again. I also have a very limited budget. Any ideas of the type of dress to wear, and how to get something nice on the cheap? I live (and shop) in northern NJ.

A black dress would probably be the best for you. I'm not sure if its still open, but Burlington Coat Factory has great dresses and very low prices. If not, then maybe TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Kmart also had some cute dresses that can pass for something very formal. You can dress it up with pearls, etc.
Try David's Bridals on Route 4 in Paramus. I just bought a bridesmaids dress there for my brothers wedding and was pleasantly surprised at how many pretty dresses & gowns there were and how inexpensive they were (most under $150). There was also a tremendous sale rack.
I would go to DSW for shoes. Great selection, good prices.

Check out Loemanns, TJ Maxx or Marshalls. They have great dresses for cheap prices. I have been to several black tie events and weddings and have always been able to find something inexpensive. The last one I went to I wore a simple black dress that was empire waist and fell to the floor. With the maxi dress craze you should be able to find something along those lines. I just picked up a max studio maxi dress as Marshalls for 39.99. Mine was cotton but you would want to find one satin, silk, etc. Pair it with some strappy heels - Marshalls again is great for inexpensive shoes and dress it up with jewelry. You will be fine. It is not important to spend a lot of money to look great. Just look for something that falls to the floor and you are fine. Good Luck.
