I used Sea Bands and they worked great. You can get them at the drug store by the Dramamine. Good Luck and hang in there!
Hi, I'm 7 weeks pregnant with my second baby. I have severe morning sickness all day long. It's getting in the way of my everyday activities. I'm dizzy, nauseas and can barely eat meals or drink fluids. I was not this nauseas with my first. I'm doing all the natural remedies I can ( drinking ginger tea, eating ginger chews, eating small meals, taking nux vomica etc..) My doctor who is very very conservative at prescribing meds suggested I take Zofran for the morning sickness. I was wondering if anyone has taken it and what you thought of it. Are there any side effects etc.
Thanks so much!!!

Hi S.,
In my last pregnancy I found that lemon juice worked really well for the morning sickness. I often sucked on lemons or drank lemonade and it worked (worked best with actual lemons). Good Luck!
While I can't speak to the medication, I was given some advice to deal with my nausea which may be of help to you. Eat an apple or applesauce when you feel nauseated. For some reason it helps settle the stomach. Also, lemon is great. I would just sqeeze it into my water so that I stayed hydrated and the lemon juice seemed to help with my sickness. Hopefully these two tricks will of of some help to you as they were for me!
Best of luck to you, I know how miserable it can be!
Hi,
I took it with my twins and singleton. They are all perfectly healthy children. The side effects are constipation. I had to take Colace (sp?). I also recommend the website http://www.hyperemesis.org/mothers/hyperemesis-or-morning.... It is a support group and has a lot of info on medications.

Ditto to Mary Beth!!
I wore the sea bands all the time!! The little bead presses on a presure point. It worked great for me!! I was never sick!!
Best of luck!!
mint is a really good morning sickness tamer! i am on my fourth pregnancy and every time i had sickness (with last three) i had used mint anything and it helps SOOO much. i loved candycanes or coughdrops and if they are sugar free its all the better. oh and raspberry mint tea with hibiscus was GREAT!! it was especially good when i iced it.
Hi S.!
What I found to really work in both pregnancies was "KRISPY" brand SALTINE CRACKERS (no other brand would work...too buttery) and sipping GATORADE or PROPEL to replenish electrolytes. Each person that I have suggested it to have found that it's helped. Sometimes I just lived off of that for awhile until it passed and then it was back to regular nutrition. I hope this helps you!

Vit b lolipops and suckers. look for them on line.
Hello, I'm 9 weeks pregnant with my first baby and I have severe morning sickness. I have taken Zofran in IV form it helped me alot. I was admittted to my local ER for dehydration from my morning sickenss. The attending physician gave it to me and I was concerned, he answered my questions and said it was ok. I have my concerns about medications, but when feel as bad as I have felt the relief itself helps the feeling of wanting to oppose such medications. I did research and everything has side effects, but I felt fine.
Hope this helps!!!
Hi S.,
So sorry to hear that you are feeling so sick. I had severe 24/7 nausea and vomiting with my son and it was unbearable. I also could hardly eat or drink anything and got very dehydrated. I tried everything I could think of that wasn't medication and nothing worked for me. I finally tried vitamin b6 and doxylamine combo (unisom tabs - not the gels) and it took the edge off enough so the vomiting stopped. Ask your doctor what the right combo dose is. Both b6 and doxylamine are category A safety for pregnancy. Zofran is a C, which I hear from my doctor is still safe but if an A works why not try that first was my thinking. I had to stay on it the entire pregnancy b/c whenever I felt that I was getting better and could go off I would start intense nausea and vomiting again. Good luck. I know how rough it is and can imagine it's even tougher with a toddler to take care of at the same time.

Hi, S....
Before getting out of bed, eat a couple peanut butter/cracker snacks. You can buy them in the snack isle individually wrapped... It's amazing!
Good luck!

hey,
i was going thru the same thing with my second pregnancy and my doctor prescribed it. it worked well but it made me extremely sleepy so it a trade off yes i didnt have morning sickness but maybe that cuz i was sleeping instead. LOL
I do not know about the medicine, but MINT GUM worked wonders for me....I was sick forever it seems. The mint in the gum helped to settle my stomach. Also club soda just plain soda water also really helped. Hope some of this might help. I know how horrible that can feel, especially while trying to entertain a toddler!
Have you ever tried acupuncture? I know the name of a good one in the South Bay. Let me know if you're interested & I'll give you her info. Also, I've heard of these wrist bands/bracelets which push on pressure points on your wrist to help alleviate nausea.
Luckily, my nausea wasn't that bad...but I ate ALL of the time. Just make sure your tummy is full & have snacks always available.

Hi S.,
I was the Same way with my second child, I foud that Pregy pops work soo well. You can find them at babies r us and any of the motherhood maturnity stores. They are suckers that you suck on when you feel nauseas they help me soo much. and also Ginger ale to that help as well. I was the same way for the first 3 months. I hope that this helps and you feel better.
A.
Nux vomica is good but you might want to take ipecacuanha It's also for vomiting. You can take it in low doses but what I do is take it every 5 minutes until you feel better.
I wouldn't take the prescription for morning sickness. It was some concerns that they cause birth defects. They doctors say oh it's a small chance. I wouldn't want that small chance to be me.
oh man i know how you feel i had the same thing with my daughter for 4 1/2 months i dropped 20 lbs and had to be put off work for a month. i have taken promethazine (it didnt help me) then zofran and the zofran worked best when i wasnt at work (i worked in a service deli in a grocery store so it didnt help when i was smelling food all day). it does really good but it is expensive (400+ dollars with out insurance i had to pay 104 for mine). its worth a try to give you a break. what i did that helpped me (unmedicated) was eat mints and drink lemon water. also i know that its cold but pop cicles are really great too. good luck!
Have you tried those wristbands that they use for motion sickness? They press on a pressure point that helps to relieve the nausea. Chemical free!
Hi S.,
So sorry to hear you're going through that. I too, went through 24/7 of morning sickness. It felt like I would never feel good again. I couldn't function. I was so dehydrated, I was put on IV fluids every week. I was also put on so many other meds but none worked. Finally, someone told me about Zofran. When I started taking Zofran I was finally able to eat. To this day, I still remember the first time I took the pill. I was actually able to keep the food down. I didn't experience any side effects.
Good luck to you.
Hi S.-
I'm sorry you feel so horrible! I know this sounds strange, but I heard this on the radio once as a hangover cure. So I tried it, and it made me feel better for at least an hour, and when you have morning sickness all day, an hour of feeling somewhat normal is like a miracle! Anyway, enough chit chat-go to McDonald's and order fries and a Coke. Seriously! Something about the caffeine and the salt/fat from the fries works well-I even do it when I'm not pregnant and have stomach issues.
Also, I second the mint gum (or just sucking on mints), eating lots of little snacks, and ice water!
Hope something helps! Even if it's just for an hour!
J.
Sea-Bands..they are little elastic wrist bands that have a bead inside that hits a pressure point on your wrists & it really does work. You can get them at any drug store, they'll be by the Dramine/Bomine for motion sickness. I used them through 4 pregancies & they help tremendously!!
I would try acupuncture. Whatever you do, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. herbal teas are ok. I hope you find relief.
Hi S.,
Sorry you are not feeling well--I've been there and done that twice! I had 24-hour morning sickness with both my boys for about 3-4 months, but it felt like forever. It was so bad that I had to go to the hospital a couple times (with both pregnancies) and get an IV to replace my fluids. It really is miserable! NOTHING worked for me--crackers, tea, gum, sea bands, lollipops, etc. Zofran saved me the first time around...it was WONDERFUL! NO side effects at all. As I had the dissolvable kind, the worst part was the taste, so I took it with soup. It made me feel 100% better! The second time it didn't work as well, but it still helped. I was also given caplets the second time, so I don't know if that made a difference.
It depends on your insurance what kind of coverage you have. The first time, my husband had great insurance and we didn't have to pay much, just the copay. The second time, the insurance was different and I could only get so much of the Zofran before I had to pay out of pocket (a lot!)--the original prescription did not last a month.
Should you try Zofran? Definitely! If it works for you, you will be happy you tried it...and so much more comfortable! (This is the medicine they give cancer patients to help them with nausea when getting chemotherapy.) By the way, they say when you feel this sick that the baby is healthy, so maybe that offers you some comfort. Not much, but some. LOL
Good luck, hope the Zofran helps, and hope you get over your nausea by the start of second trimester! Congratulations on your pregnancy! Any more questions, just ask! :-)

One more thing I just thought of. My husband's cousin had pretty bad morning sickness and what helped her was a prenatal vitamin called Perfect Prenatal from Whole Foods. It's a bit pricey, but it's all natural and you can take it any time, even on an empty stomach. You can take different amounts, too. Just read the bottle. And if it helps with the sickness, you can take a bit more than the daily dose. That's what the cousin did and it really helped her (but it didn't help me).
Are you having twins? I was like that when I was preg w/ my twins. It lasted til about 17 weeks. Nothing worked for me. Hope you get some good advice or just ride it out, stay hydrated and eat protein
sorry you're feeling so bad..when i was pregnant..my doc told me to take my prenatal at night just before bed..i bought some that are easy on your belly at WholeFoods...also carbs seemed to help..like lasagna
but taking the prenatal at night just before bed really worked.
Zoran saved my life. Can't put it any other way. I also used unisom at night. I tried everything, acupuncture, mint, lemon, preggie pops, ginger tea, ginger candies, motion sickness bands, crackers, small meals, popsicles and jello. the only thing that enabled me to get out of bed was Zofran. It is ridiculously expensive, but it saved my life. For the small percentage of women who get horrible morning sickness, it's the best answer. We just saved money on not going crazy with the baby's room and asking friends for donations and using Craigslist. Plus, we saved a whole bunch of money on groceries and not going out to dinner! Good luck to you! It will eventually pass. I know it doesn't seem that way now, but it will pass;...
I had severe hyperemesis and was on Zofran for several months. I still got sick, but can't imagine how much worse it would have been without it. My doctor called my insurance company and told them to pay for it, or I would be put back in the hospital (I had been in the hospital after losing way too much weight from being so sick). It worked, the insurance covered more pills. Before she called, we were having to pay RIDICULOUS amounts for the pills, as the insurance called them a non-necessity. I am also told that Canadian on-line pharmacies sell it for a lot cheaper. Several of my friends have also had to take Zofran and all of our babies have been SUPER HEALTHY! Good luck and I'll say a prayer for you. By the way, I know people that have had similar situations and have had a variety of boys and girls; it's just an old wives tale that being sick means the baby is one gender or another.
Don't know about the meds. What I did is stay in bed an hour eating crackers before getting up and then I used one of those sea sickness bracelets, I'm not sure if it really worked but is harmless and worth a shot.
I was on Zofran for morning sickness for several months, and it did do wonders. The one side effect I had was constipation. No one (not my doctor, his nurse, nor the pharmacist) had mentioned this as a possibility. I went a week without a bowel movement, then had to use an enema to get things going again. After that, every time I took a Zofran I also took a Colace, and everything was fine. I don't know what I would've done for the first 1 1/2 trimesters without the Zofran.
I'm 12 weeks pregnant and just getting over that lovely stage...I've found that sucking on lemon drops is the best. I hate the taste of lemon but it's the miracle cure for me! At Babies R US they sell Preggie Pops and the lemon flavor ones work the best...I also read that just sucking on a lemon helps as well. Good luck!
Hi S.,
I am a Labor and Delivery Nurse. Zofran is fine, and just try to stay hydrated, I ate boxes, and boxes of popsicles! You will survive, any questions email me! Good luck :)
Hello S.! First off, congratualtions to you!!! I wanted to let you know that I know EXACTLY what you are going through. I am 26 weeks pregnant with my third child, and up until a little over a month ago, I had the 24/7 morning sickness from hell. I didn't want to take any medication, no matter how safe it supposedly was for the baby, so I opted to grin and bear it. Right before it finalyl went away, I discovered that popsicles worked miracles. They were all I could eat, for weeks on end. They helped so much, and I just wished I had found out about them sooner! Of course, for everyone it is different. I had tried everything, the crackers before getting out of bed, ginger ale, chewing on actual ginger, mint, bananas, even cantaloupe, because that's what my aunt said helped her. Not everything works for everyone, unfortunately, but please just give the popsicles a try, If they don't work, no loss, they aren't that expensive. LOL I got a bag of mixed ones from Stater Bros, that had lime, mango and coconut flavors. I could only stomach the lime, so my son would help me out by eating the other ones for me, so I could go buy more bags. One other thing that really helped, but not completely, was switching my prenatal vitamins to a different brand, and adding additionla iron pills, as prescribed by my doctor. Best of luck to you, and again, congrats!!
Congratulations!! I just had my first baby back in September.
I had pretty bad morning sickness too. My Doctor told me to take a combo of 25 mg of unisom and b6. Its an odd combo but worked perfectly. I couldnt keep anything down but when I started this combo it was a miracle. And its safe to take.
good luck!!
Here is are some tips for your morning sickness.. http://whattoeatduringpregnancy.blogspot.com/2009/05/morn... although it not for everyone, it worked for me. I hope it would help you. good luck.
I think several people have told you this one, but what is working fairly well for me (I'm 10.4 weeks pg)is the Unisom Tab and vit B6 before bed. I sleep much better and the bad ms is held off until around 5pm the next day. But make sure it is the UNISOM TABLETS - not the SleepMelts or SleepGels. They contain a different ingrediant that is not as safe. This is allowing me to eat well and only feel crapy for about 5 hours at night.
Also the eating crackers (I like Rice Checks) before you even lift your head from the pillow for 15-30 minutes in the morning is a life saver! And I keep GatorAid by my bed all night and drink some every time I get up to pee. It helps keep me hydrated.
This stuff is great! http://www.vitalytestore.com/ I started drinking it when I was training for my first marathon. I ended up drinking it during my morning/day sickness with my second child and while in labor. It is great. It's an electrolyte drink (totally safe while prego/breastfeeding, etc.. anyone can drink it). I always have it on hand if one of the kids get sick (great to sip) or in the summer when it's real hot, they'll drink this along with water and/or I'll make popsicles out of it. You can get it online but you can also find it at REI's or most running stores. Besides sipping this when I had morning/day sickness, I found the best thing - the one thing that got rid of it within 15 minutes or so was going for a brisk walk/run, even when I so didn't feel like it. Once I got moving it just went away! Remember to eat well and eat often. I'm sorry, I don't know anything about Zofran but I did notice it is perscribed for those going through chemotherapy to help with nausea. Vitalyte has also been known to cure nausea in chemotherapy patients so it's worth a shot!
Hope you are feeling better soon and congrats on your pregnancy!
M.
It's a GIRL! LOL! I had two girls and was EXTREMELY nauseous and vomited everyday a couple times a day for 40 weeks. My two sisters were ok with their boys and VERY sick with their girls. No advice, just CONGRATULATIONS!
Hi S.,
I'm so sorry you're sick! I had Hyperemesis (feels like the stomach flu 24 hours a day) my ENTIRE pregnancy. I lived on the couch in my PJ's. Ugh... so I feel your pain. Seems like everyone would tell my husband different natural remedies for me to try but nothing worked. I don't think people realize there's a difference between normal morning sickness and Hyperemesis. My doctor put me on Zofran and I was on it with no side effects for 6 months. Since I had such a severe case it basically just took the edge off so I could keep food and water down. I have a friend who is currently pregnant and taking it and she has had wonderful results. Good luck and feel free to contact me for any reason! Also check out www.hyperemesis.org for support and more info about others who have used Zofran.
