I am 7 weeks pregnant and am having awful morning sickness. I'd rather not go on any medications as I have a farm and our children to take care of while my husband is at work. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm open to it all.
Thanks!!

So What Happened?

Thanks to all the wonderful Mama's out there! I tried almost all suggestions (except for the acupuncture, I'm a wimp!) and all of them helped a little. I carry jolly ranchers with me everywhere, as that helps to ease the nausea quickly, if only for a little bit. I went to the Dr's and asked him for help, so I tried Zofran (didn't help) and back to phenegran, which I cut into quarters. That makes me sleepy, but it also completely knocks out the nausea.

I found out about candied ginger when I was pretty much through the morning sickness stage. (Arrgh!) I also found out (as mentioned below) that an empty stomach made me nauseous. Keep trying different things - I hope you find something that works for you.

My combination was ginger capsules at night and a protein drink mix first thing in the morning, followed by herbal raspberry tea.

It took a few atempts with various "remedies" before I found the combination that worked for me.

A few people suggested the protein idea through various means, I think this helped to regulate the blood sugar and definitely, don't let yourself get hungry. I did a lot of mini-meals while pregnant. I couldn't eat big meals and not feel nauseous and I couldn't let my tummy be empty, either.

Good luck to you and congratulations,
D.

When I had really bad morning sickness, I switched prenatal vitamins. Vitamins with a lot of iron in them can make morning sickness worse. I also took Unisom at night and a B12 in the morning (or maybe it was B6. I don't remember.) which helped level out my remaining symptoms. I never actually shook the morning sickness, but those two methods made it a lot easier to handle.

Try "Nausea Ease" supplements by Dr. Tori Husdon, available at Whole Foods, combined with dry bread or toast and natural gingerale or mint tea. These are all safe for a wholistic pregnancy.

My accupuncurist, Mark Goldby on SE Burnside at Open Gate Accupuncture could cure my morning sickness when I started going every week or two.

I also reccomend Stefan, the Chiropractor at Root Whole Body on NE 15th, for just about any pregnancy ailment. He cured my sciatica during my pregnancy.

If the sickness if first thing in the morning, try nibbling soda crackers and sipping water before you get out of bed. Sometimes having something absorbent in your tummy before you start moving around can help.

The one thing that seemed to help for me were the motion sickness bands (I think they're called Sea Bands). I wore them pretty much continuously until last week (18 wks). Also, instead of Preggie Pops (which according to the ingredients are just lollypops), I took Jolly Ranchers or Lemon Drops with me everywhere. Whenever you start to feel nauseous, just put one in your mouth and somehow it helps. I lived on dry toast first thing in the morning.

So those are some things that worked for me, but I have heard many more ideas from others; peppermint tea, saltines, ginger (tea, pills), vitamin B6, bland foods. Definitely take your prenatal vitamin in the evening either right before bed or with dinner.

Hope this helps!

Mum said it was because of low blood sugar, and to keep Saltines by the bed and eat a few before you try to get vertical in the morning, which I see a couple of people have recommended. I did that for my first pregnancy. I didn't have morning sickness too badly, though.

My last three pregnancies I didn't have the problem, but I think that was perhaps because I was no longer a vegetarian and could stock up on protein (and fat) more easily before going to sleep--so wasn't running a deficit in the morning.

One friend who just kinda had a problem pregnancy all the way through, which included morning sickness (and all day nausea, really), told me the only thing that helped was a McDonald's burger!! So for some people it's an ice cream or pickles kind of instinctual fix that's needed ;).

The other thing, is if you are taking a supplement with hard-to-digest iron, STOP, and get an easier-to-digest supplement. I used an iron-free prenatal supplement and then Nature's Way iron capsules (HUGELY easier to digest). A couple of friends I've recommended this to said it stopped their nausea issues, too.

A., when I was pregnant with my twins I had morning sickness from my 6th week on until I quit working. Not to be graphic, but I would literally vomit 4 times every morning, then it was done. Once I was able to quit work, I think it was week 30, and sleep in a little longer, my morning sickness was gone. I see that you live on a farm so I don't know how this will work for you, but you can always change the hours that you are homeschooling your children. You might give this a chance so you won't need to be on any meds. Good luck.

I took Zofran- it dissolves on your tongue and has no side effects, and it helped so much! Even with our insurance (
Aetna) it was $50 co-pay for 30 pills. I was horrified and almost left the pharmacy without it, but was desperate. Turns out it was worth every penny and then some. On the days that weren't so bad, I had ginger tea and ginger snaps, even candied ginger. Just make sure you're buying a product made with real ginger and not an artifical flavor.

I suffered from morning sickness a lot, too. My remedy was to eat a little bit of cheese and that took care of it for about half an hour. I just got used to "grazing" on cheese all day long. A friend of mine recommended protein shakes in the morning, but I didn't hear about that until after my baby was born, and I didn't get morning sickness that bad with my next baby.

HUGS. Looks like lots of people have given you some good suggestions. I hope one of them works for you. I have two kids and had all day nausea (and vomiting) all nine months with both kids (one boy, one girl).

I tried the ginger, sea sick bands, yadda yadda yadda.... I too refused the meds (I was worried about the possible side effects). I agree with one of the other responses about checking with your doctor if this is the first time you've had problems. If your current kids are all the same sex, maybe this one is the other sex. (shrug)

I changed my diet to what didn't taste as horrible coming back up (hot and sour soup usually tasted good to me). What finally worked for me ... giving birth.

I hope that your morning sickness goes away soon and you can try the things others have mentioned (ignore anyone who mentions eating dirt or laundry soap).

Good luck and I hope you have a healthy pregnancy.

I would recommend Zofran, it works almost immediately and they have tablets that disolve under the tongue. I dont know how bad yours is, but I had HG so I was throwing up all day long non stop. Most of my GF's have all taken it, and they all loved it with no side effects at all. It is spendy, so if you have insurance then it would not be a problem. Good Luck!

Wow, lots of suggestions. I have just recently hit 12 weeks & the nausea is beginning to subside. I survived on 100mg B6 + 1/2 Unisom tablet every 6 hours. I tried Reglin, but caused diarrhea (still felt sick, just in a different area). B-Natal Therapops are a hard candy with B vitamin--they're not easy to find at the local pharmacy, but you can order them online or have your pharmacist order them. I also took ginger capsules.

Hi A.,
With my third pregnancy I had terrible morning sickness (24 hours a day). The doctor gave me Reglin. I know you said you'd prefer not to take medicine, but this is a tiny little pill and you will feel so much better. Plus you get to regulate it yourself. I could take up to 3 a day but more often than not, I only needed one. There wasn't any weird side effects (like upset stomach or anything). The only thing it will do is make you feel not sick anymore. I had two other kids to chase after and the medicine really helped me be able to be a normal mommy again, not the sick one. And I only used it for a couple of weeks. I have a health beautiful daughter who is now 2.

Morning sickness is often a sign of dehydration!!
It takes a lot of water to make a baby..
There is a book out there called...Your are not sick you are thirsty! I think that is what it was called. They had it at New Seasons a while back. He said it was amazing cure for morning sickness.
I have also heard B vitamins work. Which are best absorbed when taken with food. If you decide you want to try the B vitamins I have a really great one I love and you add it to water with your meal. I often have patients add Digestive Enzymes to the same glass. They are both a nice lemony flavor and compliment each other well.
I actually find I drink more water when I do that since it is so tasty!
Good luck..

Greetings,

Sorry to hear about the awful morning sickness.
For myself, carrying soda crackers in a bag in your pocket and nibble when ever nausea strikes.
Peppermint sometimes helps.

In my friends situation... she had morning sickness for 5 months before the Dr cared about the morning sickness and then changed her prenatal vitamins and that solved her problem in a couple days.

Good luck~

I drank a lot of kefir, and that helped. I don't usually turn to chemicals, especially with a baby, but this pregnancy I have been using half a unisom at night, which was developed in the 60's or something as an anti-nausea drug, but made people so sleepy they ended up marketing it as a sleeping aid. For me, the dual purpose really helped, because I felt better (much less sick) when I had a better night's sleep, and the anti-nausea carried over through the next day. I was not functioning well at work without it. A popular combination is unisom and Vitamin B6. Best wishes, hope you find something that helps. it's really rough!

my fist son, i could not keep water down. I took B6 and 1/2 a unisom tablet at night before bed. and it really helped, but ask your dr about it before doing it. My dr suggested it, but she said some will not. There is also a hard candy that has vit B that is supposed to help. it came out after my 3rd child and I wished I had known about it. You could just try upping your vit b and see if that helps. Also, keep something next to your bed, so when you wake up you put that in your stomach before even getting up or anything. There is also a thing called SeaBands that are used to put pressure on a spot on the inside of your wrist for motion sickness. good luck

You've heard most of these

Saltines- I'd eat them while still in bed then get up about 10-15 mins later. then added peanut butter. I ate this for 9 months.
I used Unisom- I didn't like to take it but I only took about a 1/4 of a pill- seemed to help- especially at night to sleep.
Watermelon ( hence the note about needing extra water, makes sense)
Starches.
Ginger anything--- I just ate a ginger cookie after 20mo's - it took a long time to like it again.

Hope you find what works for you and it goes away early on

The thing that helped me most of all was to make sure my stomach was NEVER EMPTY, especially at night. I know it seems counter-intuitive when you're nauseous to eat but it works. I would keep granola bars, Clif bars, any kind of grab and eat snacks around at all times and as soon as I felt queasy I would eat a small something.

Most importantly EAT AT NIGHT. I would get up 2-3 times at night to pee and every time I got up I would eat a yogurt, or granola bar or small thing. This way my stomach didn't get really empty which makes morning sickness sooo much worse.

Also, even if you do not normally have heartburn or acid indigestion I would suggest an antacid while pregnant. The acid makes the nausea worse.

Ginger Snaps! Carry a baggy of crunchy style (I think they come in a box)ginger snap cookies. It saved me on my last pregnancy. I couldn't even keep crackers down for more than a few minutes..and it lasted months. My mom stopped by unexpectedly one day..and I was a mess..on the floor..barely able to move..my husband doing the best he could to help me and doctors telling me "this too shall pass". My mom said "nibble ginger snaps". It worked like a charm. Also if you are on prenatal vitamins..she suggested to me that they can be hard on the tummy at first at least so switch to children's chewables. (Like Flintstones). At night you can use chamomile tea...in small doses with a little honey. Sip at that. When you feel a little stronger keep the ginger snaps with you but also keep the sprite and soda on hand..might want to see if you can find some ginger ale..that helps too.

I totally feel for you. I am 29 weeks and haven't thrown up in almost a week, but I still have to work very hard at it. The first thing I would say is notice what you are eating that makes you extra sick. I have had to cut out all raw veggies except baby carrots, including salads, and peanut butter, whole grain (heavy) breads, spicy foods, milk, yogurt, and probably some other things I'm forgetting..oh, yeah, like chocolate. It sucks, but its worth it not to eat the foods that make you sick.

I tried every single remedy under the sun, and the best things for me were sea bands with medicine from the doctor and ginger. My doctor gave me Phenegrin for night time and Zofran for day time because it doesn't make you sleepy. (its a chemo med so it works really well) I used these off and on, but the best thing I found was fresh ginger chopped into small pieces and put into an empty gel cap (from a health store). A whole piece works too, but not as well because your stomach has to break it down. This works for me and I still use them whenever I feel sick which is quite often. The other thing is there is an acupressure point on the hand in the soft pad by the thumb on the way to the first finger. If you or you husband squeezes it hard, it can have a calming effect on your nerves and your tummy.

What did not work:
eating small meals
ginger candy
ginger snaps
ginger tea
candied ginger
saltines
water (this actually made me throw up for several months)
warm milk
protein bars/shakes

As you can see all the normal remedies didn't work for me like they do for other people, but I did find some relief. Oh, and I didn't have just morning sickness, I had 24/7 sickness, I would even wake up from sleep to go throw up, so I know how you feel. I hope it eases up! Use the ginger and the meds from the doc if you can. The Zofran is very spendy, but the other one is on the $4 list, so its affordable. good luck!

The only thing that worked for me was honey roasted peanuts. The sugar will elevate your blood sugar with you having to eat too much. The protein in the nuts will make you feel more full for longer which will help too. It's kind of difficult to explain why it works. Crackers don't stay in your stomach long enough, and you have to eat too many to make it work. The act of eating was not appealing to me and the more I had to eat the sicker I felt. With the peanuts, it only took a handful to make me feel better and you can just snack a little throughout the day as needed. Other nuts would probably work just as well.

I see that you have a lot of suggestions, but only one that referred to the prenatal vitamins. I had morning sickness and kept crackers and water by the bed, but one day I started taking prenatals at night and discovered I felt much better in the morning. You could also try changing the vitamins themselves, as another mom suggested.

Sleep is always good. Rest when you feel sleepy. Your kids may like helping mommy prepare for a rest and play quietly while you are napping.

Drinking a real ginger ale (not Schweppes), something like Reed's Jamaican Ginger ale can help a ton. Ginger is GREAT for reducing nausea (of ANY KIND). Just be cautious with how much you drink. In some women too much can cause insomnia. If this happens, just decrease your intake :)
Another thing that can help is motion sickness bands. They're like sweatbands with a plastic button on the inside to stimulate the acupuncture point Pericardium 6. If you get the bands, they'll come with instructions for the proper positioning of them.
Chinese medicine (acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine) can bring a TON of relief for MANY pregnancy-related symptoms. If you have any questions regarding Chinese medicine and pregnancy, feel free to message me privately, I'd love to answer them for you!

Hopefully one or more of these will help you get through the nausea so you can enjoy your pregnancy!

They are chewable lozenges that have ginger root and vitamin B6 (which are both awesome for nausea. They actually taste really good too (and I'm not a huge ginger fan). You don't say how many other children you have, so if this morning sickness is out of the ordinary for you in comparison to your other pregnancies, I'd be checking with your doctor, it may not be morning sickness. Your farm work may have exposed you to something that's the cause of your nausea.

Hope it passes soon!!! Congratulations!
