This is my second pregnancy and I always tend to get sick. My last pregnancy I was sick all day, I had Hyperthyroidism, and I had kidney stones. I had lost 20lb before gaining any weight. Now I am 12weeks pregnant and I am starting to get sick again in the mornings. its not as bad this time, but Then When i get hungry and want to eat, once i look or smell the food, I get really Nausious. Then I dont have an appetite. i have lost almost 10 lb again And i really think thats not good. I just want to know if there is anything i can eat or drink that will make the nausea go away so i can eat. Thank you

What can I do next?

Almonds Help... I think maybe unsalted Sunflower seeds too... and another thing I found really helpful was Real Cherry Juice for Headaches.

Before I would move out of bed, I would eat 3 saltine crackers.

Aother thing was I would make me a fruit smoothie every morning. (My daughter calls them mama shakes and loves them.) Yogurt, flaxseed meal (great for the growing child in you. But you don't have to add this.), frozen fruit or fresh, 1/2 a banana, 1/2 cup of apple juice (or any clear juice), and a cup of ice. Blend. Add small amounts of water as needed to get it mixed & smooth.

The other thing I did was I went to a tea shop & bought a special blend of tea just for morning sickness. I have a fuser so I bought the loose leaves. But there might be bags as well. I would brew it, add a bit of honey & lemon juice to tast. I drank a lot of it.

Good luck. I lost before I gained also. But went on to have a great pregnancy!

There are a few things you can try. They are old things, but seem to work - you may have to cycle thru them, tho.

Ginger ale. Ginger is supposed to help, but also the fizz of the soda helps.

Peppermint. This is supposed to calm and sooth your tummy. You can get peppermint drops or peppermint tea. It doesn't have caffiene and if you like it a little sweet (I do) the way to sweeten green teas is with honey or with raw sugar. Something they do when they refine the granulated sugar makes green teas taste off.

According to my mother-in-law, almonds. Now, I never tried this, so I won't swear by it.

You can talk with your doctor about your nausea. Some will prescribe compazine (sp?) But, there is no real "Sure Fire" cure.

I wish you luck. Chamomile has also been reported to help some. If you use these and rotate them, your system shouldn't have time to get used to one.

Hi K.
When I was pregnant I was exactly like you I know how terrible that is. I actually would suck on lemon drops you could get them anywhere and also my doctor gave me some pills so you should ask your doctor about that and good luck.

Morning sickness is a normal part of pregnancy. If you have/had thyroid issues, your OB should check your blood levels to make sure that your medication dose is appropriate.
For nausea, try to consume foods that are cold so that the aroma is not as strong. This should help maintain your appetite. Also, stick with bland foods (avoid tomato, caffeine, acidic foods, pepper, chocolate). Eat small frequent meals and wait 1/2 an hour after meals to consume fluid/beverages.

If you still have questions, talk to your OB and ask for a referral to a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist.

I was sick EVER day, morning, noon and night with my first daughter even up till 2 days after she was born. It was terrible!! I gain a whopping 10lb my whole pregnancy and thats after loseing some at the start. What I did find out is that if you let yourself skip meals or snacks because your were feeling sick, it only made you feel worse, of course all this came to me during my 2nd pregnancy so I pretty much just suffered the whole first so during my 2nd pregnancy I would eat crackers and cheese before going to bed and then first thing in the morning I would have the box of crackers right next to my bed, I ate them if I felt like it or not. Ginger ale worked ok too. I made sure to just keep snacking all day and not letting myself get the tinyest bit hungry, that would just start a terrible cycle of feeling to sick to eat, not eating, then feeling worse. I wont say I didnt get sick the 2nd time around but it was much better...then the 3rd time I was not sick at all really. Now, I know this was more a craving thing but I found that if I started to feel alittle sick to the stomach I would pig out on Arbys beef and Chedder :)

Hey K.,

I also had horrendous morning sickness with two of my three pregnancies. (I lost about 20 lbs during the first trimester with both.) If you bring this up to your doc, they may have you try taking a B12 vitamin and a half of a Unisom tablet daily. I'm not completely sure what is in it that works, but man...it worked miracles for me.

Also, if it's REALLY bad, they may prescribe you some anti-nausea meds like Phenergan.

Good luck and congratulations!

I don't miss the morning sickness. Thank god it goes away. What worked for me was saltine crackers and 7 up. For some reason I could eat them and they helped cut the nausea. Also suck and chew on peppermint altoids. Peppermint is known for its ability to cut nausea. I should have taken stock out in Peppermint Altoids. I lived on them. But they work.

You may not be able to eat the way you're used to eating for awhile but at least with crackers in your stomach you won't feel sick and starving.

In my experience, bananas made me terribly sick, the potassium in them. I've heard contasting things about ginger, one of which is that it can cause miscarriage so I'd be careful with that, even though some say it cuts nausea. That may be OK if you're not pregnant.

Hope that helps. Just think, a new life is on the way. Hang in there :)

small frequent meals preferable lots of protien...eggs(soft or hard boiled), celery with cream cheese, premake your snacks so they are ready to go...

I had to be on medication with my last 2 pregnancies (the medication they give to cancer patients to keep them from throwing up during chemotherepy) I lost 20 lbs with my first pregancy, 40 lbs with my second, and 10 with my third...not to worry, I gained it ALL BACK and then some by delivery! :(

The above was the only thing that helped me! stay away from spicy stuff! or high fat stuff... you can also try sea bands (bracelets you can get at any store that sells luggage, it is a popular thing for relief olf sea sickness...) or Nux vomica (homeopathinc cell salts can get at any health food store, liike wild oats or whole foods)they sometimes helped...

good luck! I feel your pain! hang in there!

I had the same problem with both of my pregnancies (sick 5 mo's with one 6 mo's with the other and lost weight with both). I would suggest very small meals all the time - even keep crackers or something by your bed for middle of the night or first thing before you get out of bed. Also, ginger seemed to work sometimes and different types of soothing teas. You can also try seasickness pressure wrist bands from the drug store. Good luck!

I am pregnant with my 4th baby, and each time it gets worse for me. With my first child I lost 10 pounds (I was only 105 to start with, so I didn't have much to lose). My second I weighed a bit more and lost 19 pounds, and with my third I lost 26 pounds (24 of those were in 4 weeks). Weight isn't the only issue; I was so dehydrated I was admitted twice to receive fluids through an IV. This is actually a disorder called Hyperpermesis. The kidney stones were most likely due to you not having enough liquid intake, and the hyperthyroidism may have been a misdiagnosis. It was for me, and I guess it's commonly misdiagnosed when you lose so much weight and are sick like this. I test positive with each of my babies, but it goes away after I am able to eat better, which means it wasn't a true diagnosis.

Anyway...there is a federation for the disorder and there website is http://www.hyperemesis.org/. Some things that actually do help, only when you are nauseous (it doesn't help me when I actually throw up), is coke (you can actually buy coke syrup in a pharmacy to prevent vomiting) and peppermint tea. These are still hits and misses for me, but this helps me eat before it really hits me. After that I am medicated. I also try to find things that I can eat. I think through different foods and once something hits me as appetizing I get it and eat it as fast as I can. If I wait too long I won't be able to eat it.

I know one thing when it comes to being pregnant, this is an absolute. We are all so different; there is no exact science when dealing with being pregnant, what works for me may not work for you. Just try as many things as you can. Good luck.

I lost 60 lbs both pregnancies. It is a blood suger thing the more level you can keep your blood sugar the better. that means grazing. A nutitionist at Lovelace helped me figure this out. I also was given some medicine but aht didn't help much. Get up slowly and I had to eat a hand full of oyster crackers before I moved so I wouldn't get sick. Ginger altoids also helped.

Hi K.,
I know how you feel-trust me! I was sick night and day for my pregnancy for over 6 months straight. My son is only 4 months old so the memories are still very vivid. I lost 30 pounds in one month from not being able to eat and from throwing up so much. I got so sick and tired of eating dry toast and saltines-yuck still today they make me gag! The important thing is to stay hydrated, I got so dehydrated that I had to go into the doctors office and get 4 bags of IV fluids pumped into me Sucking on popsicles worked for me to keep me hydrated. This will sound weird too but when I was feeling slightly better I had pepsi floats (I used caffene free pepsi) I don't know if it was the fizziness of the pepsi or what but it made me feel better for whatever reason. (FYI the pepsi floats didn't fly so well with my doctor but it was temporary and it did make me feel better. I know that nothing sounds appetizing to you but if something sounds good eat it. My sister just ate almonds all day-for some reason that worked for her-didn't work for me though, but it may work for you. I hope you feel better soon. This too will pass-good luck. R.
PS I have a friend who is a mid-wife and she says that the women who are very sick in the beginning end up having the healthiest babies. Hang in there, I know it sucks but it will all be worth it!

hi K.,

an old girlfriend of my moms - who is a nurse - told me to get progesterone cream when I was going through morning sickness. you cant take the pill form, becuz its not natural, but the cream is absorbed through your skin and there is no harm to the baby. It made my morning sickness go away completely.

A few things that worked for me are fresh ginger, eating some saltines before I even sat up in bed, chamimillo ( I hope I spelled that right, lol) tea and if none of those work my doctor gave me a pill called phenergan, it worked wonders and does not harm the baby. I was sick through out my whole pregnancy until the end when I discorvered these few tricks. I hope this helps and God bless you.
