All Day, Not Morning Sickness!

I feel nauseated ALL the time. I have a 19 month old daughter and it was never like this the first time around. I've tried toast, limiting spices, etc. Nothing makes me feel any better. I'm interested to know if anyone else had similar issues, and if anything helped. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the great advice and support! I went out yesterday and stocked up on crackers, tea, sour candy, and ginger everything! =) I felt horrible yesterday, but today I feel great. I had been drinking 1 cup of coffee in the morning and taking my prenatal. I think that both were just too much for my stomach. I drank Ginger green tea this morning and completely forgot my vitamin. I haven't felt this good in weeks! =) I am only 9 weeks, so thanks for all the advice I am sure I will be using them throughout this one!

Another update for everyone: I had a miscarriage last week. My mother had 2 before my sister and 2 before me, 4! She says the sickness was always worse with the failed pregnancies. Not saying to scare mommas out there, but I think that is why mine was so horrible. I choose to leave this post up to help others if they're searching for some great tips. Thanks everyone for the great advice!

I have an almost 18 month old and I am also pregnant again. I haven't had any morning sickness yet (only 6 weeks), but my 1st pregnancy was horrible. The doctor told me to take Dramine and it worked a little, but still felt nauseous. I was sick for at least 6 months, but my doctor prescribed Zofron and I ended up taking it when needed and within 5 minutes I was fine for the rest of the day. The 1st 3 months I just suffered (nothing worked) and I lost about 6 lbs. Zofron is amazing. I also took it for the stomache flu and it instantly makes you feel better.

A., you got some great advices from other ladies on the forum. Another thing I did beside Ginger Ale and ginger candies was snacking on Sushi ginger, which you can get in Asian markets. Another thing that also work for me was to warm up a cup of water and put slices of fresh ginger. You can drink it like that, or you can add some sugar if you need more flavor. I also got pre-pack ginger drinks, and sugar is added already.

Hi A.,
Hopefully you're feeling a little better by now - I was the same as you and was surprised by the term "morning" sickness. Did you hear the old wives tale that the sicker you are the more likely you are to have a girl? Now, apparently there is some medical research to back that up, but who really knows. (wasn't the case for me and my little boy).

Have you tried Glow Mama? Its a drink especially for pregnant women with lots of vitamin B (meant to help with nausea). The little bit of sugar helps calm the tummy too (although it's still pretty low calorie). There is a Members' Perk for it in Mamasource too which is nice.

Good luck!

My co-worker and close friend was sick 24/7 for the first 5 months of her pregnancy. Not to scare you.... The good news is, she survived, and her daughter is beautiful.
I gave her my Sea Bands http://www.sea-band.com/seaband.htm and they seemed to at least take the edge off so she could function.
Good luck, and congrats on your pregnancy!

I was sick all day, everyday, with both of mine for the first 4 - 5 months. I think what helped the best was sucking on Jolly Ranchers, or keeping food in my stomach (hard to do I know). Eat a lot of small meals throughout the day (every 2 hours or so). Good luck!

Hi A.,

I went through this as well with both of my pregnancies. With the second one I ended up having hyperemisis. I know this may sound funny but I craved lemons all of the time. I found out from head of the high risk OB department that lemons are full of B vitamins which can help curb nausea. Ginger is also helpful in releiving some of the symptoms of Morning/All day sickness. You can purchase ginger pops at the Motherhood Maternity stores, Pea in a pod and probably online too.
One thing you have to remember is that this is only temporary and all pregnancies are different.

You might try chewing a bit of candied ginger and drinking water with a little peppermint oil (from the spice section of the store ... not essential oil) to calm your stomach. I also try to keep mints with me ... peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen ... just pop one in the mouth at the first signs of tummy upset and let dissolve slowly. Gingerale is another great one. Ginger is excellent for calming stomach upset and the bubbles in gingerale help to dispel any gas that builds up. I'm not big on sugary drinks (which can exacerbate the problem) so I usually dilute mine 2/3 with water.

Hope it helps!

I had regular morning sickness with my first child, but severe morning sickness with my second. I tried papaya enzeme, Vitamin B12, anything with ginger, and even motion sickness bracelets with pressure points. Unfortunately, none of these remedies worked for me. I thought I was just being a baby because I really couldn't function. I thought it would pass in time because I was comparing it to my previous pregnancy. I vomited almost hourly and of course had no desire to eat or drink. I ended up at my doctors office and she put me on an IV for eight days because I was so dehydrated. They gave me some IV medication which I hated to take, but I had to take something to at least slow down the vomiting. The IV meds slowed the vomiting to twice a day, but I still felt horrible. I lost 20 pound in 7 weeks. I eventually ended up on Zofram. Zofram is a quick dissolve tablet that is often used for chemotherapy patients. I gradually weaned myself off the Zofram around 5 months. The best advice I can give is to keep as hydrated as you can and force yourself to eat. Things seem to get worse if you don't. Thank goodness our daughter was born healthy and 8 pounds! She is still doing well at age 3. Good Luck!

snack on protein. i have heard the pregnant body mimics a diabetic, and although you may think breads and carbs help, a slice of cheese or turkey may help you feel better. i myself go for the real heavy proteins, like a greasy burger, but that may be too much if you are actually throwing up.

I just followed the instruction on the side of the box for antacid use. Good luck!

With both my boys I had morning sickness all day until I was about 20 weeks along. Then it just disappeared. Nothing really helped. I know the doctors will prescribe something for it. But it didn't help me. Try to stay hydrated. With my daughter I had all day sickness for the first 12-13 weeks and then it went away. I know the nurses always told me it was good to have morning sickness because it meant that the baby was developing and the pregnancy was progressing well. It wasn't alot of fun, mineral water helped a little. I have 3 beautiful kids now and the morning sickness is just a vague memory. Pamper yourself and know it will go away eventually.

Are you vomiting excessively as well? I had horrible nausea that never, ever, left me and on top of that was vomiting several times a day. I was diagnosed with hyperemesis and put on medication which controlled both nausea and vomiting. I would call your doctor and talk to him/her about it. But just so you know, the medication that worked for me (I tried several before I found one that works) was Unisom, an over the counter sleeping aid. Somehow, it works like magic on nausea.

Good Luck.

I had the same thing with my current pregnancy (I'm 7 month now). Unfortunately nothing took it away completely for me. The only thing I could do was make sure I never let myself get too hungry, and indentify and avoid problem foods. For me tomatos, garlic and most veggies were top offenders, as were minty teas. The foods that seemed to settle the easiest were plain pastas and cottage cheese (dairy in general helped soothe my system). I did try Red Raspberry Tea, which may have helped a bit, but not much. I also took Dramamine, which help lessened the nausuea. Make sure you rest when need to (I know not always easy with a toddler). If it gets really bad, your doctor can prescribe something, however, I tried Zofran and Phenergan, and while they do help, they did not make it magically go away and they both have mild side effects to consider. Congratulations and the new baby. I hope you will be feeling better soon.

I had that too, from weeks 5-16. Started getting better around week 12, but wasn't gone until around 16. It's brutal, and I'm sorry you're dealing with it too. I was worst in the afternoon and evening, but all day was hard.

If you are vomiting a lot, call your doctor so that he/she can monitor you for hyperemia. There are prescription anti-nausea meds that will help with vomiting (but for me did not help with the nausea.)

Nothing worked very well, but here's what helped:
-Cola syrup over crushed ice. This was the biggest help for me.
-Peppermint/mint gum and tea.
-Iced tea/fruit waters, etc - I had a period where I couldn't drink water.
-hard candy to suck on
-eating AT LEAST every hour, and as much protein as you can handle.
-Eating breakfast slowly in bed (my husband brought me something)

Hang in there.

I had that, too, through the 18th week. It was completely overwhelming and debilitating, to the point where I could barely get out of bed, and could not work. I actually felt like I was dying. None of the natural remedies worked. I tried everything. Finally, my ob prescribed Zofran, a med which is typically given to cancer patients to help cope with the nausea resulting from chemotherapy. That was the only thing that helped slightly. That experience was definitely a deterrent to keep me from wanting to go thru pregnancy again. Thankfully, it did not last the entire pregnancy, as I hear happens sometimes.

I feel for you! I have a 2 year old and I'm going through the same thing. The doctor said I was morning sick from the day I conceived and only now is it easing up into "morning sickness" and not "all day sickness" at 12 weeks.

I think it varies by individual, but here's what I've been doing. The sea bands (motion sickness wristbands) have worked wonders for me and also helped with my first pregnancy.

Eat often and eat small snacks. Don't let yourself get too hungry or too full. Similarly, eat only what you want and DON'T eat anything that puts you off whatsoever.

What has also really helped me is to eat small snacks with a carboydrate component and a protein component. For example, an apple and a handful of nuts. The protein makes the carb "last longer" and somehow this makes you feel less sick.

For this pregnancy it has really helped me to chew tiny bits of gum when I feel like I'm going to lose it or my gag reflex won't let up. That most definitely did not work the first time and had the opposite effect ;-) Also, I chew gum frequently so it doesn't lose its flavor. It makes me sick if the gum loses its flavor. Try to pick a flavor that won't make you sick. I'm currently working on bubble gum flavor and spearmint.

Speaking of which, mint flavor water settles my stomach.

Speaking of that, drink as much water as you can. My OB/GYN told me that dehydration causes morning sickness (you know you're dehydrated when your urine is cloudy). But don't drink lots at once or you'll feel sick. Don't drink with meals or you'll feel sick. Sip it throughout the day. I carry a water bottle.

My OB/GYN prescribed an anti-nausea medication to me called Ondansetron (generic for Zofran). It's medication for chaemotherapy and post-surgery patients. She swears it has no effects to the fetus, but I feel weird about taking meds when I'm pregant. I've used it twice on days where I just couldn't bear the sickness anymore and I couldn't work because of it.

Get plenty of rest and try to avoid stress! I notice that when I'm stressed from work and/or I'm not sleeping enough because I'm putting in extra work hours I end up getting even more sick. Avoid whatever makes you nervous and stressed.

Sometimes I just can't brush my teeth. Orange flavoured Listerine doesn't make me TOO sick so I use that to rinse my mouth when I can't brush.

I'm sorry this is long, but I hope my suggestions are helpful. It's so miserable to be so sick for so long :-( Chin up, it will pass :-)

I didn't get a chance to read all of the responses you received so I apologize if some of this sounds redundant. With both of my pregnancies I was sick all day everyday for about 3 months, so much so that I lost a lot of weight in the beginning of my pregnancies. It's usually the changes in your blood hormone levels and the nausea can be a sign of low blood sugar.

-Try the Seaband or use the pressure point for nausea on the inside of your wrist.

-An empty stomach can make you feel worse. But keep your foods simple.

-Try citrus, even smelling an orange or a lime made me feel better. In the mornings I would have a yogurt with an orange.

-Ginger helps with nausea. They have ginger tea and ginger candy, Preggy Pops that have ginger in them, and ginger ale of course.

-Herbs such as fennel or anise and peppermint. You can find teas that have these herbs, sip them slowly.

-Protein sources! Keep up your iron levels and make sure you have good sources of B vitamins.

Hope this helps!

Hi A. -

Morning sickness is your body's metabolic/endocrine system not being able to keep up with the extra demands on it - and you can have wild swings that make you feel nauseated -
The best thing I have found for easing morning sickness is to eat more protein and to completely cut out refined sugar and white flour products. This evens out the swings - you will probably also need to eat a little more often.
Cutting out refined sugars and white flour also will lead to fewer cravings in the long run and a healthier you -
Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and whole fruits, enough protein and whole grains - your body really needs top quality nutrition during this time-!! And also - make sure you are getting extra omega 3 fatty acids in your diet - supplement if necessary.

Good luck-!!

I am not sure how severe your paticular case is, however I had "morning sickness" 24-7. It was really bad and with my first pre-natal doctor he would try to brush it off with the whole "Have some cracker, no spices" thing to even after a few trips to the emergency room for dehyration.
I soon change doctors to Dr. Mary Margaret O'niell. Her and her Midwives are awesome and I was diagnosed with Hyperemesis gravidarum. You can Google it for in deep details. But anyway, I was perscribed a medication that helped with the nausea.
So if this at all sound familiar I would recommend to speek with your doctor and maybe even a second opinion. I was listening to my boyfriend's sister who recommended my first doctor and waited until I had a failed miscarrige. After that thankfully I found Dr.O'Niell(on my own) and have a beautiful, healthy son.
Good Luck and I will keep you, your unborn child and family in my prayers.

I was like this for both of my pregnancies and I tried everything. The sea bands worked for me the first time around, but not the second. Sour candies helped tremendously. I did not go anywhere without them. They sell special preggie pops that are basically sour candies, so it is cheaper just to buy your own. I had good luck with sour ice breakers. I ate so many of them when pregnant that the thought of eating them right now makes me want to gag. Also, ginger is supposed to help, but the smell was too overwhelming for me and I couldn't get it down, but I was told to try ginger snaps. I lost over 10 pounds the first 14 weeks of both pregnancies, but was able to make up for it during the rest of my pregnancies. Eating lots of small snacks instead of a big meal helps and also I usually had a small window (usually late afternoon) that I felt a little better. I would down as much stuff then as possible without stuffing myself to try to get some nutrients in me. Also potato chips seemed to help, I don't know if it was the useless carbs or the salt or the combo of them together, but I could get those down when I couldn't even look at another cracker. With my second, the dr prescribed some medicine to help (same stuff they give to chemo patients) but I was too freaked out to try it since there weren't enough studies on long term effects. My son was 19 months when I got pregnant too, and it is so much harder being sick when you have a little one to chase after. I found myself letting him watch videos when I felt the worse, it was the only way I could lay down for 30 minutes to regroup.

Whoever named it "morning sickness" obviously never had it! Probably a man! I found that if I kept something in my stomach at all times that helped a lot. I carried trail mix around with me everywhere. I hope this works for you or you find something that does.

With my first, I had morning sickness about a couple of hours a day in the evening and I was tired sometimes. WIth the second, it was constant.
Good luck. Congrats with the baby!

I feel you A.. My daughter who will be 3 next month, I started getting morning sickness when I was 8 weeks prego with her and it lasted my whole pregnancy. I was gagging/throwing up non stop the whole time, and what a HORRIBLE feeling. It got so bad I had to quit my job, and even started to get carsick when riding in the car. I tried every natural food remedy and nothing worked. The only thing that helped was Zofran. That was a lifesaver b/c I could not function. I have read some of your previous responses from other moms who have taken this too, and I agree that it was the only thing that kept my food down as well. I am petite to begin with and had went down to 92 lbs from being so sick all the time and being dehydrated constantly. With the help of Zofran I could keep my meals down and put on some weight and at the end, though I was still nauseous, I could function and had put on 30 lbs, and had a big 9 lb 2 oz girl. The Zofran had no negative effects on my daughter, and I would take it again in a heartbeat, but much sooner if my future pregnancy was the same way. Monitor yourself and if you are vomitting a lot make sure to try to stay hydrated, b/c dehydration can induce labor pains. If you do get dehydrated go to the hospital to get IV. I had to take quite a few trips there initially before the Zofran since I couldn't hold anything...not even water.
I wish you the best of luck and hope this doesn't continue your entire pregnancy. And the good news is that at least its not in vain you will have a beautiful baby to show for it at the end. And as soon as that baby comes out nausea/"morning sickness" is completely gone. Just like magic!

I personally didn't have the issues that you're having but i've seen other responses on here that would include using those sea sickness bands. I used Ginger tea if I got nauseated, but I iced it. You can also use peppermint tea.

Dear A.,
Congratulations on your pregnancy and I'm sorry to hear you are feeling so ill.
All pregnancies are different. I know that from first hand experience. I don't know why....but I know it to be true.
You didn't say how far along you are.
Sometimes it's worse in the very beginning and gets a little better. Sometimes the nausea can return toward the end of your pregnancy.
I was so sick with my first baby I didn't think I would be able to survive it. I couldn't keep anything down. Then I went through the craving phase.
My second pregnancy wasn't nearly as bad in that regard but certain smells would make me absolutely sick. Things like the smell of cooking chicken or eggs. Forget it. I just kept saltines with me at all times. They didn't always work, but I found that having something on my stomach actually helped a bit. It's hard to eat anything when you feel so sick but it does help.
I feel for you.
Just hang in there.
Best of wishes!

Oh my did I ever feel sick almost the whole pregnancy with all 3 boys I carried. The girl must not have produced the same hormones or something...cause it was manageable. I ended up eating lots of bread like foods that helped but only for a very short while. I would try the protein suggestion. And the ginger products helped a bit. There is a ginger soda in dark brown bottles you can find in health food stores. It was so rich in the ginger taste (me not liking strong ginger) sometimes just the tought of having to sip it was enough to make me feel better for a bit. Also, I heard of a drug that is given to people going through cemo. I dont know much about it but that I heard of someone taking it when she was pregnant.
Hnag in there. Once the baby comes...this will seem like such a small bump in the road.

I had all day sickness for 9 whole months with all three of my babies :( I would wake up and try and have sourdough toast. Anything sour would help me out. Sucking on lemons, sour green apples, and sourdough toast. Also, if you like these, Slurpies were a saving grace for me. The cold and the fizzy soda made me feel better. I hope these help you out. I know how hard this is, but it's worth it in the end!

Try fresh ginger with honey in boiled water. you can grate the ginger and squeeze the juice into a cup (about a tsp.) with honey or agave. and add water that has been boiled. hot for you cooled for kids. honey not good for kids but agave should be fine. Ginger is a traditional herbal remedy for nausea and has been used for centuries. IT REALLY Works!!!

I am just 8 weeks along with my second and have been super nauseated all day long too, My nausea actually gets worse in the afternoon, I think because I am tired at that time and it is warm outside. I try to keep my tummy filled with bagels or pretzels and I have begun using this natural product called Mommy's Bliss Morning Sickness Magic- they come in pills which I am taking now and also a powder that you mix with water, it is a mixture of ginger, Vtm B6, and red raspberry, and I have found that it works pretty well. I found them at local health food stores here in Santa Cruz, might be worth a try. I keep hoping that the 2nd trimester will prove to be better

I had the same thing with my pregnancy! The crackers and ginger and 7up did not work for me at all. I threw it all up! Peppermint would help push puking back for a couple of hours, but didn't make it go away. The different types of medicine the doctors gave me didn't work either. They called it hyperemesis. The ER doctor that saw me the second time I was admitted for dehydration suggested a treatment she used that is an A list medicine for pregnancy in Canada, but not used here in the U.S. I took half of a Soma sleeping pill and a small B12 vitamin 3 times a day. It was the only thing that worked. At one point in my 6th month I tried to stop taking it because I thought I was past the 'morning' sickness, but had to start taking it again after a few days. Baby Center has an article on it explaining why it works and exactally how much to take. Good luck! By the way - my son was a whopping 9lbs 1oz when he was born and is now a super healthy 13 month old.

Some people have this problem with their pregnancies. Chances are that you are carrying a boy this time and your hormones are clashing with his. If you are taking your prenatal vitamins in the morning, you may want to switch and take them in the evening just prior to bed. Eat a little protein in the morning before you get out of bed...peanut butter and crackers, nuts, boiled egg, etc. You can try ginger candies or gingerale, but usually there is not much you can do but live through it. It should subside after the first 8-12 weeks.

Hope you feel better soon!

Aw, I am SO sorry! I totally understand as I just got through that and I have a 2.5 year old boy...but I was sick with both pregnancies, ALL day, every day for the first trimester. Spices didn't really make any difference for me. The only things that helped were a daily cocoa-cola (just one) and being sure to eat small meals (made up of mostly carbs and proteins) every 2-3 hours. As long as I didn't get too hungry, I could deal with the constant nausea without needing to actually throw up. Also, my worst time was brushing my teeth (particularly my tongue...and I still have a hard time with that) so I got a tongue scraper and used cinnamon toothpaste and that seemed to make it easier. Good luck to you and hang in there!

I am 11 weeks pregnant with my third baby and, for me, this pregnancy seems like it is the worst. I am starting to feel a little better now but from 5 1/2 weeks to about a week ago, I felt sick ALL the time. What seemed to work for me is wintergreen or peppermint lifesavers. Vanilla milkshakes helped a bit for my first pregnancy. Hang in there. It won't last too long, although it feels like forever. I hope these things help.

I had horrible "morning" (all-day) sickness with both my pregnancies, and it lasted until month 8 with one and 7 with the other. In both cases, cutting out dairy and soy helped a lot (I just figured this out by the process of elimination, you might try noticing if any particular groups of food really seem to make it worse). Also, sea bands (wrist bands for sea sickness) helped a little, I think. You can get them at the drugstore. Sucking on candied ginger may help, and papaya (fresh or dried) may help, it has an enzyme that aides digestion. Best of luck to you, I hope you are able to get some relief!!!!!

Hi A.,congratulations for your second baby! I too had "all day sickness" when I was pregnant with my son. I even ended up losing a little weight, but luckily the nausea disappeared around 14 weeks. Anyway, the only thing that really worked for me was sour foods, especially lime popsicles and sour hard candies. After that I was so used to sour foods that I ended up eating whole lemons like oranges! Incidentally my one year old now loves lemons. Good luck A.! I hope your nausea goes away soon :)

I felt like this all day for my entire pregnancy with my son. I hope for you that this ends after your first trimester, but be prepared that it may not. However it's unlikely that it will last the entire time like mine did. My sister and a friend have also experienced similiar pregnancies, which were debilitating. My sister can not get out of bed without vomiting and has two other young hildren. All three of us went on the prescription Zofran and it helped. Phenergen didn't work for any of us, which is another Rx frequently prescribed. We would have preferred to not take any medications, but it was a matter of survival. It's one thing when you're are feeling like this with a first pregnancy - a completely different ball game when you have other children. Be prepared for people to offer laughable advice, like "Did your try saltines?". If you are posting this question, you are clearly beyond just the typical "morning" sickness and the typical quick fixes. In addition to Zofran, here are some other things that my sister, friend and I found helpful:
1. eat protein first thing in the morning and generally try to eat protein when you feel sick and throughout the day
2. never let your stomach go empty, eat many small meals throughout the day
3. eat whatever sounds good to you, even if it's fatty, your baby will be fine, your doctor will confirm this
4. your prenatal vitamin may be contributing to the nausea - try not taking it for a few days and see. If you feel a bit better, ask your doctor for a prescription prenatal vit.

I will post again if I think of anything else.

Hang in there and congratulations!
J.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I was sick the entire 7 months i was pregnant with my son. He was two months premature. I was sick to the point that I could keep nothing down and would end up in the hospital on multiple occassions for hydration. The only drug they gave me at that time was phenergen and it does work, but it would knock me out. I couldn't function. Then when i got pregnant with my second and the nausea started again I had a new doctor and they gave me zofran (sp?) It is a drug for chemo patients. Let me tell you it works wonders. I was still a little nauseated during the day, but it was far and away the best thing I could take. I didn't throw up every day, 4-5 times a day, they way I did with my son. And I was able to function and take care of my two year old they way I couldn't on the phenergen.

I know a lot of the responses you have tell you what types of foods to try and when to eat them in order to help with the nausea. I tried them all too with my first because the doctor just didn't believe my nausea was as bad as i claimed it was. She didn't want to even give me the phenergen until I passed the 14week mark and was still complaining about it.

I would reccommend trying the natural remedies first and if you find something that makes you feel better that is great. Anything is preferable to putting drugs in your body. But it is so bad that you can't do the things that need to be done, like taking care of you daughter, there is no shame in asking your doctor for something to help you out.

I hope you feel better and that this doesn't last your entire pregnancy.

Hi A.

With both kids I was fine first thing in the morning and then if I was feeling sick (pretty much from 6 to 16 wks) and from about 10 am to 12pm pm onward it hit me! Nausea with my first and then REALLY SICK with my second. After dropping 10 lbs in 2 wks my doc put me through a barrage of anti-nausea meds, the only one that worked was Zofran, it's a med used for Chemo patients. Expensive if you don't have prescription insurance, but I'm pretty sure that I would have paid for it if I hadn't had the coverage. It was a miracle drug, and allowed me to eat at least one decent meal a day, which helped tremendously.

Your doc may decide that you should try crackers, 7 up, eating specific types of foods and avoiding others, but truth be told this could last awhile so ask about potential solutions that can just get you through the day. Especially if you have an older child to care for, you're going to need all the energy you can get.

Best Wishes...
