It sounds like she would like Real Simple....it has a little bit of everything: decorating, financial advice, health, cooking, fashion(practical) etc.
I would like to give my sis-in-law a magazine subscription as a birthday gift. The only one I personally read is US weekly, so I have no clue what is good these days. She is really involved with her twin 10 year olds. She is a SAHM and she loves to cook and read. She used to be a graphics art designer and loves to decorate. Her family just bought a new summer home on a lake. If you know of any magazine that you just couldn't go without and would fit her description, please let me know. Thanks!

Cooking Light is awesome.
I don't get any magazines about decor, but I do get gifts of several magazines from my mom. I can recommend Cook's Illustrated and Midwest Living. The great thing about Cook's Illustrated is that it's small and non-glossy - not so much to recycle. And Midwest Living only comes 6x a year, but it's always packed with stuff I enjoy - lifestyle, regional travel with cool articles about vacation spots I didn't know about, and yummy recipes.
Family Fun is a good one for crafts and activities to do with kids.
Kiwi is another one with cooking and crafts geared toward spending time with kids, but with an organic or "green" focus.
A lot of magazines are going under in the rotten economy right now... but there are some cute cottage/beachy ones like Cottage Living (not sure if it's still around) that she might like to get ideas for her new lake house.
My husband loves to cook and he gets
Saveur
Rachel Ray
Bon Appetit
Maybe go to the bookstore and browse to see what looks like "her" ? I imagine there are some pretty good graphic design ones out there too.
:)
you could go to magazines.com and look at the offerings. they have descriptions of tons of magazines. you could also go to your local library and peruse a few to see for yourself if you think they would appeal to her.
"Living" I received for years and love the organizational, decorating and cooking suggestions - always timely. Real simple is a new favorite and, although I don't buy it, often, I love reading Oprah's "O" magazine. Many great articles in these two. Midwest living is a great one but a lot more travel, decorating, cooking - with a new summer home on the lake, could be a good one.
Redbook, Family Circle and Better Homes & Garden are always good choices.
Family fun is nice but the kids are getting older - very good magazine, I think, for a mom w/ younger kids.
Hi Z.-
What a thoughtful and practical gift. I subscribed to Better Homes and Gardens for a few years and loved it. They cover such things as decorating, home improvements, family issues, cooking, and more! When I read your description of your sister in law, I automatically thought of this magazine. I checked their website and they have a really good offer right now... buy one year and get a second year free and get a cookbook ... all for $22. Here's their website if you're interested in checking it out:
I agree with a previous poster that recommended going to a bookstore and browsing their magazine selection. Excellent suggestion!
I love Ladies Home Journal, Prevention, Woman's Day, Real Simple and Clean Living. I'm not so much into the parenting magazines, but maybe there is one about parenting multiples?
I agree with Family Fun. Lots of cute ideas for seasonal crafts, snacks, etc.
