I agree with Kirschbaum's Bakery. I grew up in Western Springs and ordered my son's first birthday cake from them. Very good!
I was wondering if anyone knew of a good bakery in the OakBrook/LaGrange area that could make a Super Mario Bros. cake for my son. He's a big fan of the MarioKart game but am having a hard time finding a place that will make a custom cake for him. I would appreciate any suggestions, thank you.

My neighbor is a cake decorator at a Chicago bakery and makes custom cakes on the side. I'll bet she would do a great job.

Cakes Plus in Naperville on Chicago Ave makes tasteful and pretty cakes. Don't know if the location works for you. I have used them for several years for my daughetrs birthday cakes-everything from Tweety Bird to Disney Princess. They also do wedding cakes. Hope this helps.
Pticek's in Harlem/Archer area. Choose a picture on-line of Mario, print it out and take it there and they will do a screen print on the cake. We've done that for several years and the cake is always good and people are impressed by the graphics. (Our son that is turning 7 has a Mario themed party this Saturday - too funny!)
Hello, For my daughters 11th birthday she asked for a "Alice in wonderland" themed cake,(the characters from the movie-more gothic) and I met this wonderful baker named Elizabeth! She did a wonderful job on my daughters birthday cak ( my daughter was in tears!) It was a red-velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, she delivered it to our home, she even assembled it for me! She is very reasonible too! If you would like her phone number I would be happy to give it to you! Or if you would like pictures of my daughters cake I will gladly send a pic to you!
Kirschbaum's Bakery in Western Springs is really good.
Try Oak Park Bakery, bring in a picture. The cake is excellent and my kid's themed cakes always come out looking great!
My neighbor has a cake and pastry business and you can find her at http://www.pastriessotasty.com/
She makes very good cakes and they are not ridiculously priced as other places are.
Try Oak Mill Bakery. They have a couple locations and are REALLY good.
I am not sure if anyone already suggest this, but call Bleeding Heart Bakery. They make fabulous custom cakes (they've competed in Food Network cake challenges) and they are 100% organic. For my daughter's 4th birthday last year, they made a custom Belle princess cake, which was a bust of Belle. It turned out amazing. My daughter loves strawberries so they baked them right into the batter. The cake was delicious.
They have a location in Oak Park, not too terribly far from Oak Brook. And they deliver! So you can have them drop your cake off the morning (or afternoon) of your party and not have to worry about where to store it in the meantime.
They are a little pricey but I felt so worth it, especially if they can custom create the exact cake your child wants.
Hope this helps!
Ditto on Webers Bakery. It's worth the drive to Chicago (near Harlem and Archer Ave--not too far).
You've got to try Webers Bakery. Awesome cakes and they taste just a great!
