Kindle Fire, Nexus, Nabi2, or Nook Color

Go with the Nook Tablet. It takes micro SD disks and I can fit 3-4 kid movies on it, depending on how long the movie. If you download movies, make sure you don't download all the extras (Bonus features, games, etc etc) and download J. the movie.

If you are choosing btwn the Kindle and Nook you basically have to decide btwn the world's larget bookseller vs the world's largest online retailer. Since I needed something to read books, I chose the Nook. but to M., the Nook and Kindle were almost exactly alike when it came to using it to read and play games. My Nook is actually pretty fast when I'm on the internet.

Plus, I can go into any Barne & Noble and have my Nook service by an actual person for free, rather that on the phone with a Kindle.

You can get games, books and other kinds of entertaining apps with the Nook, whereas a DVD player you can only watch movies. Some kids need more activity in the car than J. watching movies. And the Nook is portable, so she can take it in with her if she stops for a bite to eat, but you can't do that w/o alot of plugging/unplugging/adjustting/setting up etc etc for a DVD player.

My kids love my Kindle fire. They have a bunch of apps and books that you can download for free or $0.99. However, while in the car, there is no internet service so we can't do things like watch Youtube, check facebook, etc. There are certain games that can't be played because they need WiFi.

I would think the DVD would be good. You can find DVDs at the used bookstore and use trade credit. Walmart has some older ones for $5 or less.

My vote would be the DVD player. Also, a DVD player will play a CD, so you could burn music to a CD/DVD and she could use it in the car.

I would go with the Kindle fire. I am getting Genna one for Christmas. For the price you get a lot. I also have an Amazon Prime account so we get a lot of videos for free. :)

Nook Tablet.
Kindle for books you have to get them from amazon. Nook you can get them from anywhere that sells them in epub which is most places online. You can't stream to the nook or the kindle with out wifi , and you have to add a data device to your wireless plan if you went with a device that has 3G or 4G streaming available.
Now for converting DVDs to a format the devices can read , I'd recommend " DVD Catalyst 4" it's a program that can be found online.
Netflix I'm pretty sure makes it where you can't copy their dvds.
How old is the child in question?

I was wondering if you knew how to burn DVDs. In that case, get the Nook. It has an expansion slot (SD I believe). You'll run out of data space quick with movies on the thing.

And even with Netflix, you'll need WiFi or a data plan. I personally think with burning movies onto the device, I don't miss the internet (then again, I have my phone for that).

Honestly, it's going to be J. as expensive an investment to buy the apps, songs and videos for the Kindle. And if you get a tablet that's only WiFi, then you have to be hooked to WiFi to get internet. The 3G/WiFi versions are always more expensive, and then you have to buy an internet plan.

In the long run, I think it would be cheaper to keep the DVD player and check eBay for some cheaper videos. You could also try Salvation Army, Goodwill and garage/yard sales or borrow from friends and family and burn copies of CDs and DVDs.
