I would say if it's for you, and you can afford it, then splurge and get the iPad. There are a lot more apps available, it's bigger, has more features, and is just so much nicer. But you do pay for those. My husband and I don't really have a need for a tablet ourselves, but we did buy 2 Kindle Fires for our kids for several trips that we would be making. The apps are good enough for my preschoolers, and many of them are great for me too. We can get Netflix and Amazon movies at home. But as others have pointed out, it's only wi-fi which is not available as many places as you would think. We did purchase some movies and shows and downloaded them on the Kindles so we'd have those out and about, but it won't hold a ton (we have 4 movies and about 15 shows loaded, plus several songs and 20-25 apps). So far my kids have been super happy and so have I. They serve their purpose of being good entertainment when we are at the doctor's office or on an airplane or I need a moment's peace at home. They are extremely durable... my 2 year old has treated the Kindles terribly and they have held up well. She has dropped it from a grocery cart several times and there is not so much as a scratch on it. So, personally, I am super glad I didn't dish out $600 for an iPad only to have her throw it across the room. :-)
