I'm shopping for a way to read electronically. I've been considering Nook and Kindle. Have you compared them and which one did you decide on? And if you have either one, what do you like about them? And......I've recently thought that maybe a tablet would be the way to go. What do you think?

I do want to use it to read books but I also want to read magazines and to watch Netflix movies.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After doing some research on line and going to a class at the library and considering your posts I purchased a Nook Color. I bought a refurbished one and so it was only $99. So far, I'm very pleased with it.

Samsung Galaxy Tablet with Kindle App is my vote. I also have an older Kindle and I love it too, but I use the tablet more since I can do everything on it.

And you can get Kindle books from the library also, my local library offers them.

IPad Mini. I just preordered one today. My husband has an iPad 2 which we all use and love. I purchased the Kindle Fire HD but the operating system was not as nice as the iPad so I returned it. To me it is worth the little bit of extra money to enjoy my tablet vs wasting time trying to connect to different webpages. The apps for the Fire where not as nice as the iPads, I spend time on Pintrest, Netflix, Facebook. The Fire did not have apps for PBS and XFINITY which we use. There is a kindle app for the iPad which I use with my son.

I have a Kindle Fire and I don't love it. It's great to read on but navigating the web can be a pain. It just doesn't like to behave. I'm hoping to find an iPad under the tree.

If you are only interested in reading, the Kindle reader is amazing and very light. It's not color so you can read outside (hard to do with the Kindle Fire or Nook Color).

I have the Kindle Touch and wanted it just to read and I LOVE it. My 8 y/o likes my Kindle so much he is asking for his own for Christmas.
I love how easy it is to purchase and download books from Amazon. I am also finding about half of them I can loan to another Kindle user via our Amazon accts.

I have a kindle i loved it until i got my ipad. I downloaded the kindle app and that is what i use to read all my books, netflix, surf the web, and my kids have all their apps that they play. If you have any other form of apple I would do the ipad or ipad mini since they all can sync up together so you dont have to buy music or additional apps which is a nice feature. All my music can be used on all my apple products where my sisters droid wont share purchased apps with her husbands phone. I chose the kindle because I like amazon better than barnes and noble. If you do not have any apple products the new tablets coming out like the fire hd or the samsung tablet look pretty decent although ive only seen the samsung one (but didnt get to play with it)

I have a Nook Color and hubby has a Kindle Fire.

Reading magazine on the ereaders is a bit of nightmare. We have both tried it on both readers and with all the ads and "stuff", it was just too difficult and not very satisfying to muddle through.

We like my Nook for reading. The kindle is great for that too, but the Nook is easier to use in bright light. We often take ours outside to read while our kids play. So for us, that's an important fact.

The Kindle is proprietary. You have to get the books from Amazon.com. That's really your only choice. If you have a prime membership with Amazon you get one free book and month and you have access to movies as well. We like this feature, but I like that I can get stuff for my Nook all over the web. There seem to be more options available with the Nook.

Both have access to the internet, but my Nook is a little slower and not as easy to navigate. The Kindle is MUCH better for searching the web, but I still wouldn't call it outstanding. I have watched movies on both and they both do well with that, it's just navigating around the web that makes watching on the Nook a challenge.

The Nook is also a bit more organized. There is a separate pages to organize things. The books are in one section and I can organize how I want. On my Nook I have a shelf with my books, another with my husband's and another for our son and daughter. It's nice. The Kindle throws it all together - apps, games, books etc.

And the Kindle, thanks to Amazon, does have a feature we love. We can instantly send books to others with a Kindle if we have the correct email address. If we own the book, a few clicks later my MIL can turn on her Kindle and it's on the shelf immediately. With the Nook it's a whole downloading process. Which for the computer savy is no biggie, but it's too much for my MIL.

I don't know if this helps you decide at all. But maybe it's food for thought. If you want it to read mostly, the Nook is the way to go. If you are hoping for more of a tablet application, I think the Kindle may be the best bet. HTH!

Kindle Fire, a thousand times over. The Amazon interface is my reasoning, plus our public libary consortium supports the Kindle format.

If you're JUST wanting a reading instrument, definitely go with either the Nook or the Kindle over a tablet. I don't know about the latest version of Nook, but I know the most recent Kindle has kind of a backlight type function so you can read at night without disturbing others. Other than that and the fact that through Kindle you buy everything from Amazon, there's not much in the way of differences.

We have both the Nook and a Kindle. I like the Nook, mainly b/c I get a HUGE gift card to Barnes & Noble from the in-laws for Christmas every year. Husband like the Kindle.

To be honest, I do most of my reading the old fashioned way...but I am a HUGE reader and I have to say, in all honesty, I use the iPad for most my electronic reading around the house. When we are going on a trip, husband and I each load up the Nook and the Kindle and that is when we use them the most.

~I say go for an iPad...those things are just so neat!

Depends on what you're going to do.
Nook has better screen for straight reading and you can get books from the library.
Kindle and tablets are backlit, you'll have to pay for books, but you'll have better Internet.

My daughter likes her Nook. We picked Nook over Kindle largely because we were told that with Kindle you can only get books via Amazon, and we did not want to be locked into one provider like that. With Nook that's not the case. We went with the Nook Color -- larger screen and the ability to make the background darker or lighter. The black and white Nook had a very grayish screen background that I did not like, but the color version is fine. Reading outside is not an issue with us, so I dont' know about the whole "Kindle is better outdoors" idea, but my daughter uses the Nook in the car during the day with no issues. Again -- I just don't like being locked into one company as much as the Kindle locks you into Amazon. Barnes and Noble is behind the Nook but it seems less tied to just using their content.

If you want it to do all that other stuff then I'd get a tablet, or a Kindle Fire which is basically just a tablet. I have the old school Kindle that just reads and I LOVE it! I like just having a "book" and nothing else. If I want to play games or whatever then I get on my phone or computer (or iPad), but when I want to read I just want to focus and not be distracted by shiny colors and the opportunity to surf the web! ;)

We love our iPad a whole lot and you can get the Kindle app for it. It will also sync to your Kindle, your phone and your computer if you want it to so you can read the same books on all of your devices and never lose your place. It's awesome! I'm sure nook probably has a similar one but I've never used it.
