Hi Moms
I want to thank you again for helping me on my journey with trying to get PG!! I took your advice and got the HSG (Hysterosalpingogram). It was a painful and long 3 minutes. But I am glad I did it. The doctor said that my tubes are blocked or they could have spasm during the procedure. She also said that they saw something abnormal which is more than likely polyps or fibroids. Should I get these procedures? Are they any serious risks or side effects? Has anyone had these done on your journey to get PG or anything else?

What can I do next?

Hi T.,

I had both the procedures done last year (2008) due to having pain for several months on my left side. Due to the location, we did not know if it was OB related or GI related (I have IBS). My OB went in to check it out and found some scar tissue from my c-section in 2007 & some mild endometriois along my intestinal wall. Recovery was just a few days & not too bad. I am trying to get pregnant again too & hope that there is no problem due to any endometriosis. But too soon to tell - only TTC for 2 months.

I think having the procedure done will certainly help. You will be fine. Good luck to you & your pregnacy journey. It's not always easy, but always worth it!

I had a Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy after my first round of invetro did not take. They found I had stage 3 endometriosis, 30 polyps in my uterus, and cyst on both ovaries and I also had a T- shaped uterus. I feel if I did not have that done I would not have my 2 yr old twin boys. I do not regret it at all. If I was you would go thru with it. The recovery was not bad at all. I was back to work in three days.Good luck.

I had a laparoscopy done in 2001 when I was still a junior in high school. Its a pretty simple procedure and the healing time is quick.I was back to school in just a couple of days. Hope everything goes well for you.

Hi T., I had a laparoscopy due to chronic abdominal pain. I also was trying to get pregnant with no luck. The procedure is a piece of cake with little to no recovery time. I was a little sore that day, but that's all. I got pregnant later that month! Good luck!

Just a word of caution... some of these procedures require the uterus to be perforated. This may have implications for your mode of delivery (vaginal birth vs c-section). Having had both, a vaginal birth is vastly better and is safer for you and your baby. So if there is a good alternative to something that perforates the uterus, I would take it. Mostly, I would just ask your doctor about the implications of saying OK to this.

Are you seeing a reproductive endocrinologist? I hope you are?

Yes, I just had a hysteroscopy 1 month ago. My RE did it in an outpatient surgery center, so I was put to sleep for it. The hysteroscopy is to go in to the uterus only and remove any scar tissue, polyps, or fibroids. So the hysteroscopy will only fix the uterus, NOT your tubes. So if you're going to do IVF you can get away with just doing the hysteroscopy. But if your doctor wants to try to unblock your tubes then you would have to do a LAP. Remember, there is no guarantee they will be able to unblock your tubes with a lap). If they can't block your tubes then you'll probably have to do IVF because IVF bypasses the tubes.

The procedure wasn't bad at all and yes, it is safe because there are no incisions necessary. I had some cramps after the procedure but nothing that Tylenol couldn't take care of.

PM me if you have anymore questions. I'd be happy to answer them.

It is so hard to make all these decisions while trying to get pg. I have had both of these done through our 7 year of infertility and two miscarriages. We now have a 2 year old through IVF and an 8 week old that was a natural conception the drs are SHOCKED at.
My lap was very painful recovery for about 4 days and then I started to feel better at about a week. I had very extensive endo they called it stage 4plus and that most drs would have given me a hysterectomy. Do they think they can remove the blockage with a lap? Are you going to a fertility dr or just an OB? I had alot of conflicting opinions between the two and was so much happier with the fertility dr.
I hope that you feel peaceful with the decision you make and it can help you become pregnant soon.
