My husband and I looked at them but decided to go with a King Koil mattress with a 4 inch memory foam top. We absolutely love it. We have had it 4 years now and it is still as good as day one.

A friend of mine has it and absolutely loves it. I
have the pillow and feel the same way. With just the
pillow I sleep better than I have in a long while.
We just ordered a mattress at the Danbury Mall. It's a biodegradable, non-toxic mattress. We should get 30 yrs of use out of it! It's wonderful!
We bought a mattress 3 yrs ago and my husband won't sleep on it because it bothers his back too much. And I won't get a new mattress that is not earth-friendly.
There's a big write up on the mattress we bought in the Natural Awakenings Magazine --- current issue.
EssentiaMattress.com
When I found out that conventional mattress companies use pesticides, formaldehyde and PBDE's as flame retardants, I starting looking into other alternatives...Then, there's the polyurethane and the synthetic fibers and other highly toxic materials and glues in the mattress itself.
Tempur material is really cool and can be super comfortable but buying a mattress comprised exclusively of it ... well it's expensive, SUPER heavy, and almost too comfortable. Because it molds to your body, flipping from your left side to your right can be a formidable challenge- like crawling out of quicksand.
I've found that buying a less expensive mattress (perhaps something hypo-allergenic and free of harmful chemicals - especially if you co-sleep) and then getting a memory foam topper (3-4" is good) is a great compromise!

My husband and I's mattress is over thirty years old, and unfortunately we couldn't afford a new one, so last year one of our Christmas gifts to each other was a Tempur Pedic Memory Foam Mattress Topper for our bed. I picked it up at a local Big Lots, on sale around the holidays last year for $60, and it was the best investment we ever made. Our old mattress now feels like its brand new, and no more back aches!
If just a 3 inch thick Mattress Topper could make that much difference, then I would say that an entire Tempur Pedic Memory Foam Mattress would probably be one od the best investments you've ever made!

Dont like tempurpedic as it feels like it is trying to swallow me and its like rolling over in quicksand. As for the "sleep number" it workes with air bladders to adjust the firmness. I have heard horror stories about them losing pressure, A definite forget about it, The tempurpedic and this one never need turning but the tempurpedic weighs a ton and there is no way a kid good deflate that (or pet), Either one of thos is going to set you back about 3,500 dollars.
More than most cars I have had. We just have a regular mattress and its just fine, Try before you buy and remember any vdeo they send you will not be objective. Also if anything is spilled on the tempupedic without a cover it is absorbed in. (My mother found that out)
and THAT is my 2 cents
I own a Tempur Pedic and LOVE it. Many in my family find it uncomfortable. I recommend that you go to a store to try it out. My parents own a sleep number bed and love that. I tried the sleep number and found it uncomfortable. Marriot sells beds and my sister intends to buy one from them when she's ready. Another sister prefers the Westin Havenly Bed. They have extensive experience traveling and apparently these expensive hotels sell their beds/mattresses/sheets on line.
My brother wanted one of these for the longest time. When he got married and bought a house, he bought one, and I'm sure he didn't "cheap out" on it. ANYWAY, he hated it. They did tell him that it takes some people awhile to adjust to it, and he tried sticking it out longer, but ultimately he returned it. I don't remember if he ever said what the issue was, all I know is he was extremely dissappointed in the mattress.
We have the tempur-pedic and I can tell you it is definitely worth the investment. It is the best bed I've ever had. My husband has a chronically bad back and generally had a hard time sleeping until we got this mattress. One thing you should know, it gets VERY warm, especially in the summertime because your body heat warms up the spot you lay in and the mattress retains that heat. So, you won't need a blanket in the summer months, probably only sheets.
LOVE the tempur!!
If you are interested in organic stuff, I highly recommend looking into an organic latex mattress. Very pricey (but so is tempurpedic) and they don't let off fumes, have chemicals, etc. Since we spend so much time on our mattresses, it was worth the investment for us. We bought a Lifekind brand mattress, and love it. They have periodic deals/sales/free shipping, so you can save a bit, and they are guaranteed for something like 20 years, so we decided it is worth it. And we are very happy with the comfort and quality.
We have a Tempurpedic with a pillow top. Let me just say I no longer wake up cracking my back and my bac pains are gone. For us it was worth the investment. We purchased it from Sleepys and were able to get intrest free financing,
The Tempur-pedic mattresses and the like can be great, but they're not for everyone. They give off fumes which really bother some people. Get one of the pillows first to see if you're affected by it. Latex foam mattresses are similar (also expensive), but they don't give off same fumes.
If you can afford it, get it. It's wonderful!
Hi W.,
My husband and I purchased the king sized top of the line tempur-pedic. It was expensive, but Sleepy's had a payment plan and we are paying a little each month over a few years with NO INTEREST. I have had chronic back problems after a car accident several years ago. I have to say that this past year has been WONDERFUL! I would recommend this bed to any one. In fact I have recommended it to friends and I haven't heard one complaint from the ones who purchased it.
Of course this type of purchase is a very personal one and what works or doesn't work for one family.....well you know. If you have the energy, give it a shot. You can sleep on it for 90 days and if you don't like it, they will take it back. I know with Sleepy's they will waive the restocking fee if you select another one of their beds.
We went with the top model because there is a 20 year warrenty (instead of 10) and it really just felt that much better. I mean, we were making a 20 year committment here...I wasn't worried about saving a little now and paying a lot later.
FYI: we bought my son a bed at the same time, a full sized 'regular' mattress. Needless to say...he is ALWAYS in our bed now because it is so comfortable. Thank God we got the King Size LOL!
Best of Luck.

Hey W.! Just read your message! My husband sells mattresses. He has all kinds including the memory foam- my son sleeps on one and loves it! His warehouse is in the Raritan center in Edison. Its not a store but the prices are great- its like a clearance center. They are all brand new in the plastic with the manufactures guarantee. So funny...I sound just like him. Any way if you haven't bought already definately come and take a look! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the prices. His name is Mark and his number is ###-###-####. Tell him you found out about him from his wife on mamasource. He'll get a kick out of it...he knows I love this site. Good luck!!
I tried one at Sleepy's. It is like sleeping on a brick, and just as hard. I hated even sitting on the thing. We ended up buying a kingsdown (Sleepy's brand). They measure you and suggest a mattress by what the computer says. And then after waking up in pain, and barely able to move for about 6 mos, while sleeping on this brand new crappy mattress...we switched with my mom. She has a Sealy Posture Pedic. I am finally sleeping well. Honestly, stay away from Sleepy's. I will never buy another mattress from them. I felt ripped off afterwards. I hated the temper-pedic. If you like to move around while you sleep, you probably will hate it too.
Hi W.,
We have a Tempur-pedic and all I can tell you is that every night when we get in bed my husband and I say that buying our bed was the greatest purchase we made when we got married!! THE BEST!!! I truly love my bed. It does tend to get warm which can be annoying if you get hot easily. My husband does get hot easily so we bought a mattress cover and it helped. I think now they make one that is cooler though. But it is soooooo comfortable and really eases aches and pains. It totally eliminates pressure. So worth the money. I would buy one again in a heartbeat!

Hi W.,
My husband and I have had our Tempur-pedic mattress and pillows for about 7 years and we love love love it! Well worth the money!
My husband dreams of one day owning a TempurPedic, but in the meantime we have a mattress that is a cheaper version. It was at Wal Mart and it is a memory foam mattress about 9" deep. I can't remember the brand, but it was the only one. He bought it thinking it was a foam mattress topper. I find it incredibly comfortable and much better than the cheap mattress we had for years. If you want to try a less expensive version (since not everyone likes foam mattresses) you could try that one (I know it was less than $200). Otherwise, I'm sure the TempurPedic is infinitely more comfortable than ours!
My husband and I bought a tempur-pedic about 5 years ago. We really love it. I heard that they are now making them with box springs for more support. I find the bed is easy to make because I can squish that last corner of the fitted sheet without ripping off the opposite corner. I only have 2 drawbacks: The top cover has "pilled" and it is not attractive and it wasn't recommended to put a mattress cover on the bed. That makes me nervous because my kids like to crawl in bed sometimes and you never know what is going to happen!
I highly recommend the sleep number bed. My husband and I can each set our side to whatever we prefer with no arguments or anything. It was the best investment we ever made.
We love our Tempurpedic! It is extremely comfortable, and though it was expensive, we are happy we bought it. The downsides are: you cannot use an electric blanket or heating pad on it, it damages the memory foam. You have to be careful of spills because liquids damage the foam. It's very heavy. MOST IMPORTANTLY, you should be informed that it can take a while, for me it was about a month, to get used to the feel of the mattress. It is very different from a spring mattress, it doesn't "bounce" at all, and it takes more effort to move around in it. We stuck it out, and once you get used to it, it is wonderful. It responds to your body warmth, so it cushions and supports every part of you. Another advantage is there are no dust mites in foam. We put a mattress pad over the tempur-pedic cover, and it has protected it well. It does get very "pilly" when you take it off to wash it, that can be a pain. But having the pad over that means I don't have to do it too often. Did not notice any fumes. We have the thickest firm one they make, it's adjustable with massage vibration. Tricky to get sheets to fit that size, but I LOVE my bed. I sleep very well on it. Also the neck support pillow is great, I don't wake up sore anymore. Highly recommend this bed if you can afford it...Don't know if Bob-opedic compares, we didn't try that one.
we have had it for 3 years-love it.
We shopped and shopped and shopped...its confusing - or at least it was for me. We bought the sleep number bed first and originally loved it and enjoyed having two controls for our different preferences. But over time it seemed to lose its shape and we were sinking into the middle again. So we shopped AGAIN! We wanted a tempur one but they were so expensive and quite a few people we knew who had them complained that they sweat alot in them which was NOT going to work for my husband at all. We ended up buying a higher end mattress by Kings Down. It has been fabulous (its about 8 mos now)and so far I am very happy with the decision. So hopefully that gives you one more peice of feedback that hopefully helps. I do have a sister who LOVES her tempurpedic and swears it was the best thing she ever did for her back.
We LOVE ours. I was always sore getting out of bed (using a regular matress). But with the Tempur-Pedic, I am great. It took my back about a month to get used to, but it is a SUPER comfy bed. We got pillows and matress cover thrown in for free too!
I was nervous about the purchase due to the cost, but we really love it. I would get another today if I needed one.
Good luck with your decision.
My husband and I bought a Bob-O-Pedic 2 years ago. It's the same material as a Tempur-Pedic and it's sooooo comfortable! It's a king size and it was only $1,000 compared to like $3,000. We have a platform bed, no box spring, so I can't tell you how it would be with one. The Bob-O-Pedic can be tailored for both sides of the bed...firm or soft. I originally got firm, while my husband got soft. I ended up kicking him to the couch while I slept on his side, then we called and they exchanged the bed for one with soft on both sides. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Did I mention I love it? It's so comfortable and my kids love to jump on it, and now I don't have to sound like my mother saying, "Don't jump on the bed!"---even though I still do. We also bought the cover that protects the bed from stains b/c if it gets stained, the warranty is voided. I don't get any fumes like the some of the other posts mentioned. Good luck!
My husband and I have one and we love it. It has helped us both with reducing back aches. My baby sleeps with us sometimes, too and he seems to sleep more soundly and longer on it, as well! We have one of the firmer ones with a thicker mattress. U should really try them out in the store before you decide which to buy.
Some other people on this message board said they thought it was like "quicksand" but they probably had the softer models. I've never had trouble rolling over or changing positions. Ours was one of the more expensive ones, and like I said, firmer. It was TOTALLY worth the money and feels like an investment in our sleep. We also purchased on Sleepy's credit with three years no interest! Great way to do it. I'd recommend it over and over.
The Tempur-pedic is the biggest waiste of money I have ever made. After one week of using it, we were both fighting to sleep on the couch. It feels like you sank into a coufin, so everytime you try to move in the night you have to climb out of that hole, that effort wakes you up. It is actually bad for you to sleep in one position for too long. It was the biggest pain to get rid of it. I begged the Salvation Army to take it, but they would not because they had too many of them already! Too many other suckers had fallen for the stupid ad. So DONT get it! Save your money.
Now we sleep happily and comfortable on a Sealy hypoallergenic that cost us $250.
