Tempur Pedic or Sleep Number (Or Other?)

We'd like to invest in a new king sized bed. We'd bought a very nice "regular" mattress before and it's been about 10 years. Our backs are starting to hurt...a lot!

We are larger people and seem to like the same comfort level....on the softer side.

What do you recommend? How should we make our choice?

EDITED: Do any of these beds seem warmer or cooler than a regular mattress? (i.e TP warmer or SN cooler)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We ended up buying a memory foam mattress from Walmart.com. It is a 13" mattress and is HEAVENLY! It cost MUCH LESS than Tempur Pedic. Very happy!

Actually, I like a firm Talalay latex mattress (not memory foam) best.
I've been in a few hotels that had Sleep Number beds and I just couldn't find a comfortable setting.
I've tried memory foam, but it was too warm.
Talalay latex can be expensive, but it lasts 30 years and my back loves it.

My husband and I looked at both of these when we were shopping for a new bed. We laid on both to feel the differences. I personally found the tempurpedic very stiff and uncomfortable (it didn't matter what level it was with or without pillowtop features). We obviously went with the sleep number, but be careful with this if you and your partner are different sleep numbers (i.e., he wants it firm while you like it soft) it can cause there to be a "cliff" between the two of you that one or the other will keep falling in to. My husband and I don't have this problem because our numbers are very similar. I love my sleep number and am very happy with our decision to get one. BTW you won't find a store with both of these mattresses in the same store. You can only buy sleep number at their sleep number store locations (believe me we tried) :)

We purchased a memory foam mattress topper from Costco. We can't afford the TP right now, but due to my neck problems I wanted to try a foam mattress. I can't wait to get a TP someday, the memory foam mattress topper is so comfortable, I fall asleep as soon as I hit the mattress and feel so refreshed in the morning.

TEMPUR PEDIC - me and my husband are the same and since we have purchased this mattress we wake up 10 times more refreshed and its a lil firm and way different than a regular mattress but after your first night sleep you will wake up feeling GREAT! We love ours

We sleep on a sleep number bed at my inlaws house and we don't really like it. there's a big bump in the middle preventing you from cuddling with your significant other. Kind of a deal breaker for me! NEver tried the temper pedic.

We have had a tempurpedic for over three years now, and I can't say enough good things about it. We got one with the pillowtop because they say those are better for side sleepers. I have not had back pain since the night before it was delivered (the last time I slept on our old "cavey" mattress).
I haven't found it hotter than our old mattress either.

Love it.

My inlwas have a sleep number and while they say that it is nice, they wish they had gone with a tempurpedic instead.

TP's make you sweat....at least it did for me. The best mattress? A motionless waterbed.....aaahhhhh, the feel of sweet comfort after a night!!!! It doesnt matter what comfort level you choose....your body weight determines the firmness. You actually wake up feeling BETTER than when you went to bed!!!!

My husband and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE our tempurpedic mattress. We liked them so much, we bought some for our sons as well.

I recommend you find a mattress store with both and then just flop on each one for 20-30 minutes and see what you think. I know I complained the first three minutes I was on our tempurpedic because I thought it was too hard. I was asleep by the 5th minute and after 25 minutes I was signing the delivery papers.

The best part is not being jostled when your partner gets in or out of bed. I'm a fairly light sleeper and this always used to wake me up. Not anymore!

Enjoy!

it's so hard, because you really have to SLEEP on a mattress a few nights to get a good idea. just testing 'em in stores doesn't really help.
we held our noses and took the plunge on a sleep number. it has improved our sleep (although our numbers are now WAY different from when we tried it out in the store!) not miraculous as we had (somewhat naively) hoped, but worth the $.

The sleep number is great but for couples with different comfort levels should be careful. My husband likes a firm mattress, I like a soft one. For that reason, we went w/ the SN. He is a good bit heavier than me. He tends to gravitate towards the middle which puts pressure on my side and makes it seem harder than the number setting reflects. If I had it to do over again, we would go with something else. For singles it is great!
