I live in Houston, Tx. I was told that you can get with a down town attorney to help you with doing your own paper work. I'm not sure how that works. I paid a so called attorney and he is trying to rip me off. I paid him $400.00. He told me that if I didn't want anything that, I would just have to pay $500.00 total. Now he is asking me for another $465.00 to complete the process. I don't have it. I'm from New Orleans; due to Hurricane Katrina. I'm not asking my ex-husband for anything. I just want out. Can someone let me know about any resources that I can use or how to get my divorce done on my own on much cheaper.

I actually did my own divorce in 04. It's actually pretty easy if you have no bills/credit issues that need to be addressed. If it's a clean cut, all you have to do is obtain the divorce papers through the internet. I think he paid 17.95 for them, and then it has a step by step directions on what to put where.
That lawyer that you hired is a rip-off, so don't pay him ANYTHING else. If you do it by yourself it will be around $250 depending on what area you live in. If you cant afford that just fill out the paupers paper in the divorce papers you download!
You can do it all yourself. YOu will have to go downtown a couple of times to finalize everything and there are people there that can show you where to take the papers and what to file first!

I did this my self and it was a little difficult however it made me feel really good. The only thing is I did my custody agreement to which if this involves custody you should just go through the attorney general because they do it for free and you will have to go through them any way if your ex refuses to pay child support which mine did. But as far as the divorce part you can go to the legal library or go to www.divorce-forms.com and download them free. THis process will not actually be free though because even theough the forms are free you still have to pay to file them with the court and pay to have him served. My girlfriend did her own divorce through the court house. I think she bought the "kit" from the internet filled out all the papers and then filed them. It was as easy as that. Can't remember how much she paid but the $400 you already spent would have paid for it.
You might want to tell that man of your dreams to cough up some money to help you get divorced so ya'll can legally be together. I would also mention the lawyers name that tried to rip you off so no one else uses him.

Try going to http://www.ehvlp.org/home/default.aspx it is a web page for a group that does "pro bono" legal work. Pro Bono is free work. If you don't qualify for there services, they can probably direct you to other access to pro bono services.

You can do your own divorce in the state of Texas, as long as there would be no child support involved and you have split everything the way you want it. If this is the case you can go to your local library and check out a book (some have a cd in them) and you can download what papers you need to file and print them off on your own. Both of you sign them. I did this very thing just 3 years ago. And yes it is legal to do it on your own. Good luck!! S.

In Harris County, I do not know of hardly any court that will let you do your divorce on your own. You do not get to choose which court you get either. I tried that, and was told by the Judge that they didn't have time to look at my case because I wasn't represented by an attorney. Once I got one, the Judge was more than willing to review my case.

You are a strong woman who knows that regardless of the process, however difficult it can be you are finding a way!!!
