Anyone Have Experience with Sambucus for Kids?

My 18 month old son has been getting sick with colds very frequently (he is in daycare). Someone recommended Sambucus to help with his immune system. I did some research and it looks like Sambucus is an excellent way to help support your immune system and fight colds and flu, which is exactly what he needs.

I started him on 5ml (1 tea spoon) once a day, of the kiddie syrup, which is the recommended dose. After 2-3 days, he began to have a little bit of diarrhea. I didn't think of the connection to Sambucus and continued giving it to him for a few more days but the diarrhea also continued. Then I thought it may be related and stopped the Sambucus for 1 day and no more diarrhea. I don't want to stop giving it to him altogether because he really needs help fighting viruses through the cold/flu season. Has anyone had this issue? If so, what if anything helped? I am thinking of starting it up again but at a smaller dose and gradually build it up to 5ml. Any suggestions? Thanks to all for reading my post!

Have you tried giving at least 1000 IU's of vitamin D3 daily? That is where I would start. Make sure it's D3 and not just vitamin D. They make a gummy one that you can get at Target and most other drugstores and at health food stores.
We do use Sambucus but only when we are in a crowded place for the day and it can be used at the first sign of sickness too. I never had a problem with soft stool on it. Could have something in it that causes diarrhea. An allergy perhaps.
Also suggest using two awesome products made by Boiron. Coldcalm and Oscillococcinum . Coldcalm is more for cold symptoms and Oscillococcinum is more for flu like symptoms. Both should be started at the first sign of illness. I know that the Oscillococcinum is suppose to be made by duck liver and I agree it sounds like snake oil but I really don't care, it works. I've tested it several times. Both of the products have saved us so many times and I highly recommend them.

I have had the same experience with my toddler. I only give it when she starts having symptoms and really, the problem hasn't been so bad that I felt we had to stop taking it. We also supplement with Vitamins D3 and C and I think that has helped speed up the recovery process.

Give it to him when cold symptoms start to show instead of giving it daily.

Also, be sure to lysol his items coming home from daycare, doorknobs... do lots of hand washing and try to avoid large crowds as much as possible. A flu shot would be most beneficial.

Hi M.---I don't have much experience with Sambucus but I have heard many people talk about it.

I DO know about a great whole food based supplement made of dehydrated fruits and vegetable juices. The powders are then put in capsules or soft chewable gummies for little ones. The capsules can be opened and some of the powders put in foods if your son doesn't have very many teeth. The gummies are easily cut so as to give him tiny pieces also.

There have been several independent studies to show that this supplement strengthens and balances the immune system. It also protects and repairs DNA, has great cardiovascular benefits and reduces inflammation in the body which is thought to cause all degenerative diseases. It really works and it's just fruits and veggies, 15 different ones! What a great idea. If you would like to learn more, feel free to contact me. I also have information on 'negative' foods and how those impact the immune system. It is my honor to help.

Good luck! D.

Honestly I would not give my child any supplement without his doctors okay. My suggestion would be to remove him from day care and get a private sitter. Day cares are dirty, there are not enough workers per child and the children are allowed to come there sick as long as they are not running a fever. After saying all that my daughter takes the Halls Vitamin C and it seems to help her to keep from getting sick and she is 23.
