Hi, my son is 4 and almost with no doubt will be diagnosed with autism at his next evaluation. I was wanting to talk to other mom's about it.

What can I do next?

Hi K.-

I have an 8 (almost 9) year old son with autism (Apserger's). I started intervention with his at about 18 months and had hi diagnosed at 2yrs old. He is doing great. He is in a private school making honor roll and he has taken piano for 5 years now. He was allowed to join band this year (a year earlier than the rest of the kids) and was going to take trumpet. He took to it so easily that they have also put him on tuba and trombone. He isn't cured. He will always have autism but we are learning to work through it. It seems that no sooner do we think that we have one issued solve and we are clear something new pops up. His school is very understanding of him and work very well with him accomidating him when needed and pushing his comfort zone at the same time. He sees a psychiatris and psycologist to work with his meds and what ever problems he is dealing with. If I can help you in anyway, please let me know. You can e-mail me at ____@____.com

I may not be able to answer your questions but I can try. I have a 10 year old that is probably going to be diagnosed as Aspergers which is in the autism spectrum. Do you have someone to help you? If not, I can give you referrals that are awesome for some things. You will probably need help when it comes time for school and don't go it alone, it is too hard. Believe me I know, I have been fighting the school for what seems like forever and now that I know more about what is going on with him the battles are just beginning. Feel free to email me if you want.
Good luck,
C.

Hi K.. My son was diagnosed with Autism when he was 5. In the years since, his specific diagnosis has evolved to Asperger's Syndrome (which is akin to high-functioning autism). I'd love to connect if you want and share with you. One thing we have learned along the way is to build yourself a circle of support and don't be afraid to ask for help from others if you need it! So, with that said, it's nice to meet you and I hope to hear from you soon!

K.,
I am an Occupational Therapist in the area. I work with many children with autism. I worked at the Southwest Autism Research Center (SARC) in Phoenix Arizona before moving back to northwest Arkansas. Autism is a very interesting and unique disorder that has very few answers for parents. I can relate to the confusion you must feel as a parent learning about your child. Please feel free to drop me an email with any questions you have concerning your son. ~L.
