Another Laundry Question: White Sweater Has Been Tinged Pink

I accidentally threw a bright red bib in with a load of light a couple weeks ago. I have a cotton sweater that is kind of an ivory color and it seemed to have soaked up some pink hue. Can i wash it by itself with some bleach? Will that get rid of the tinge or is there no turning back??? TIA

I did the same thing but with blue to a dozen of my white cotton tanks & shirts (became this dirty blue gray). If you did not dry the sweater yet throw it in, by it self, with bleach. I felt that there was nothing to lose because I would have to buy new white tanks & shirts anyway.

If it is going to be throw away if it doesn't turn back to the original color than what would it hurt to try all kinds of things.

You might start with trying a color remover that is in the dye area of most grocery stores. It is what they use to remove all dyes from garments before they do the dying process. If that doesn't work then wash it like normal to get all the other chemical out of it then do the warmer water and bleach. If it is still wearable I would put it on, at the very least you can wear it to ball games and other sport things for the kids.

If you have dried it already, i would NOT bleach it by itself - not knowing what it is made of....

I have used baking soda and lemon juice and let it soak in a tub by itself in the past and that has helped.

I've heard of using Pine Sol in hot water and letting it soak, but I personally haven't used or tried it. I only use Pine Sol to clean my floors, etc.

Maybe no turning back.
I'd try (since it might be toast anyway) to wash it by itself, in warm, with a Shout Color Catcher sheet.
Good luck! <crosses fingers>

I would NOT use bleach - sometimes bleach does funny things to clothes! Not sure how it might work at this point, but do you have Windex or Glass Plus on hand? SOAK the sweater in that and relaunder! It worked on a demin skirt ages ago for me - just not sure how much dye it might get out now!

ok this is going to sound weird but works miracles for me...I use pine sol I have never used bleach or clorox to wash my clothes. But sure do use the Pine Sol when ever I get stains or dyes in whites or bright colors clothes. I put hot water and some pine Sol in a seperate container, let it soak overnight and you will be happy with the results. It will not ruin or remove any original colors.

Edited- after the overnight- throw it in the washing machine as if you were doing regular laundry and done! :)
Good Luck!

Sunlight is also a natural bleach. Have you ever noticed when you take a picture down off the wall, the color of the wall where the picture was is darker than that of the wall surrounding it? That's because over time, light bleaches the colors out. Back in the "olden days" that's how women bleached their clothes...wash them, then lay them out on the grass to dry to let the sun bleach them. My mother-in-law threw a black sock in her whites once and she did that and it worked. I would suggest soaking it in Oxyclean or some such overnight first, then washing it regularly, then laying it out in the sun...though you may have to wait until spring for the sun to be stronger...not sure how it works in the winter.

When I was in high school, all of our white cheer uniforms with cardinal trim turned pink. The coach had the best luck with Rit color remover.
