Royally Messed up a Load of Laundry!!

I accidentally threw an orange tie-dyed outfit of my daughter's into the kids' load of colored clothes. Anything that had any white is now a hue of pinkish orange. Including my son's clothes. Some of my daughter's clothes can pass as partially pink, but not the boy's. I let them soak overnight in hot water with a few scoops of the oxy booster stuff, but I don't think it did any good. I even put in a tad of bleach. Does anyone have any tricks or ideas on how to make the white parts white again? I have not dried anything yet. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I'm not sure this load can be saved!
My years in retail gave me this item to share:

When ever you have a hand-dyed item or any item in question,
run item in washer with COLD water and 1c. vinegar. This will set the dye. Run through cycle again using detergent. Good Luck!

RITZ dye remover will remove any unset dye. Usually available at the grocery store with Ritz dyes.

You might try mixing Hydrogen Peroxide and stain remover - about 4 to 1/HP to stain remover. It will act as a mild bleach, so be careful on the non-white parts (although I have only had one shirt become "bleached" using this and that was on a blood stain, and I use it on all stains, all fabrics). I don't know if it will work to get the pink out, but it's worth a try.

My vote would be for the Clorox Bleach Pen. I've used the oxy-clean before and have had some luck, but the bleach pen has been the best so far!!!
Good Luck!

If it is specific areas of white you can try the bleach pen.....this works wonders for my need to spot bleach partially white items. It has 2 ends and it dispenses a bleach gel. I have not had any problems with the color getting bleached ect. I believe it is 3.00 or less at your local store. Good luck!!

There is a product call Red B Gone (www.redbgone.com). I was introduced to this product by the water department in Bartlesville when we had an issue with what seemed like rust in the water system after some pipes broke. I was so angry that I called the water department to see what they would do and they suggested the Red B Gone. She did warn me that if it was really strong (and man was she right). You can use it on your laundry, but it will strip ALL COLOR out of the cloths making everything white. Example, one of the items that had been ruined was a pink cotton blanket. But it was brand new, never used. So I washed it anyway and it is now a sparkeling white. It worked great to get the stains out. But like I said, just be sure that you are okay with everything you clean with that product becoming white after using it. Hope this helps.

I have always been told to soak it in Biz. It's safe and it has worked for me, may take a few days but it worked:)

If the white parts are small, you could try using the clorox pen to "color" the white back onto the white parts. I've used it before, but you have to wash each item individually (if you throw it in with a load, it will bleach the other clothes). It's time consuming, but might work :-)

I did something similar recently. I used lye soap. I rubbed it directly on the areas affected and them used an old toothbrush to scrub it really good.
I've also used oxyclean and clorox color safe bleach mixed together in really hot water and let it soak for a while.

I have read two things, one is to make a paste out of comet and water and scrub it onto the white parts to remove the staining then let sit and then wash later.

The other tip is an alternative to bleach, (because of smell, or it wears the white clothes out faster) you can use white vinegar, it whitens and brightens clothes without the bleach smell and gets other smells out of clothes like urine for example. Its also good if you have sensitive skin and cannot use bleach.

Take advantage of the sunshine today... and squeeze fresh lemon juice on all the stains... and lay them flat on a table or something outside.

This has worked for me in the past...

Good LUCK!

There's a color catching cloth you can buy. You wash the load like normal and put it in there. It will collect all the colors that are in the water. I'm not sure how it would work after the fact. It's meant to be used with every load just in case something does leak. I've used it. It really works nicely when you put it in at first.

OxyClean in hot hot hot hot water is the best thing I've found for ANY stain. I don't think it's ever failed me. Sometimes I have to soak items twice, and occasionally the stain doesn't come out until it actually goes through the washing machine again. This process has worked for everything from chocolate to ground-in dirt, even if it has sat for weeks before washing and even if it I missed the stain and it has gone through the dryer.

So my advice - try soaking in the Oxy again, use extra hot water, and run the clothes through the washer again before giving up.

Good luck,
K.

RIT dye also makes a product that you throw in with laundry that has suffered from a mess up like yours. I have never tried it, but it might worth a shot. It is in the laundry detergent aisle at wal mart. I threw a crayon in the dryer once with some white clothes and kids clothes, I feel your pain.

I don't know if this will help fix the white parts, but I got into the habit of adding about 1/4 cup of baking soda in with the laundry (and decreasing the amount of detergent by about half) while I was cloth diapering. The baking soda helps the fabrics become more stain-resistent, and it looks to me like my whites are brighter than they were without it. (I never use bleach because my husband and kids have very sensitive skin.)
