2Nd Year Molars

My daughter has been complaining on and off the last couple of weeks that her teeth hurt. They actually kept her up crying the other night. She finally let me put my finger in her mouth to check and I can definately feel the edges of one of her bottom molars. The problem is that she wants to chew on everything trying to get some relief back there & recently chewed the corners of a library book. YIKES!! I tried to give her a teething ring from when she was little but it's too big to get back there. Any suggestions on what I could give her to use for teething? Someone suggested letting her use her toothbrush but I'm a little concerned with letting her walk around with her toothbrush.

What can I do next?

The vibrating teeters are good. And I'd get her some freezer pops popsicles (the ones in the plastic and then she can get the cold back there. You could also freeze fruit.

The toothbrush idea sounds good...you could cut off half of it so it isn't so long or find a really short kids size one. Also, freezy pops work good too. That is what we used. And children's orajel works great too. Numbs it enough where it doesn't hurt so much and may prevent some of the chewing. Good luck and God Bless.

Have you tried the vibrating teethers? The are made by The First Years. Blue handle with a yellow star. When they bite down on it, it vibrates. I bought mine at Babies R Us for $7.99. They seem to work well and also work for toddlers who go thru the biting phase. You could also try a semi frozen terry cloth wash rag. Just get it wet and put in the freezer for 15-20 minutes and let her chew on it for a while.

Hi C.-
Try using Hyland's Teething Tablets. They are homeopathic little white tablets that dissolve instantly in the mouth. They taste sweet so she will like the taste. That is the only thing that I have ever used with my kids when they are teething (I have three). If you are not familiar with homeopathy it is really wonderful. The teething tablets have chamomile in them which helps relieve the pain and in turn helps them to sleep and calm down. They are totally natural and safe to use with other medicines. The rule with homeopathy is no food/drink 10 minutes before and after the medicine is given. You can find the teething tablets at Whole Foods and possibly HyVee and some pharmacies.
Hope she feels better!
J.

A toothbrush was the ONLY thing my daughter (2.5) would use. It saved out lives! :)

We have always given our girls the pop ice popcicles. The are long and skinny so she can get it back there if she wants to. I also have put an ice cube in a small washclother with a rubberband around it and let them bite on that. My girls never wanted a "teether" but they loved the washclothe with the ice.

I would be cautious of letting her chew on a toothbrush. I've heard about a child that developed a huge abscess on his gum because a bristle became lodged and infected.

I used frozen carrots with my son... just peel and cut into sticks, wash and put them in the frezer (while they are still a little wet). They worked great and he wasn't hyped up on sugar from all the popsicles!

Would a cool, wet washcloth work? It may also be too big to get back there, but I've known that to work with smaller kids...good luck, sounds awful!

I would recommend talking to your ped before using the Hyland's tablets. Our dr told us there are some ingredients that can be dangerous to little ones. For our 1 year old and her molars, we have those mesh bags you can put carrots, etc. in that will keep any piece that break off from choking her. Not sure if it's big enough to let the carrot far enough back for a 2 year old, but it might work. Good luck!
