Partial (Language) Immersion Kindergarten

My daughter has the opportunity to attend a partial immersion kindergarten class for Mandarin (Chinese) through our school district. Can any of you with experience in language immersion for young children give me some pointers as to the pros and cons of this? I have been told the school may or may not having a parents' night meeting to address such questions. As a former high school English teacher who also took 14 hours of Spanish in college, I see the advantages of learning a foreign language even if you will never use it. I know it...

Autism and the Army

I was wondering if any mothers out there who are military mommies can tell me anything about having a child with autism while being in the military. My DH is joining the army and I just want to have some things cleared up that I've been wondering about this past week. Okay so the recruiter told us that our son would receive a "check" or "payment" monthly because of his autism. Is this true?? And if so how much will this payment be? If this is not true...then can someone tell me if you know about being able to keep receiving an ssi...

Seeking Advice on Teaching Abc's, 123'S

My daughter turned 5 in May and we are going to start homeschooling her for kindergarten next week. I am a tad worried about how to start because she does not know her abc or how to count. She does not have a learning disibility but was speech impared until she was 3 1/2. She is very smart and I am sure she will pick up quickly once we are working on a "regular" basis but was wondering if anybody else has had this challenge and if so how do you start, do I just start with A and repeat it until it's learned and then move on?

Is My Toddler Stimulated Enough?

This might seem like an odd question, but I was listening to a radio program about how important it is to stimulate a child's mind in the first three years of life, and I suddenly had the thought, "Oh my gosh! My son is almost three! Have I done enough to stimulate his mind ?!? Is my window almost gone?!? AHHHH!" Now, I would like to say that my two-and-a-half year-old can reliably count to about 15 (though he has a little trouble over 10), can easily identify all the letters in the alphabet (in capital letters, though he can do most...

Wanting to Teach Sign Language

I have a friend who said that teaching her daughter sign language before she was able to talk was helpful. She and the daycare taught her things like: please, thank you, more, hungry, thirsty, etc. My child is at home with me everyday and I would also like to teach these things. He is 3 1/2 months old...what age is appropriate to start this and how do I go about doing this.
