Pink eye doesn't necessarily have to cause the eye to get pink. In most cases that I, myself have had it, the eye only got pink after waiting a while to be seen by the dr.
My son is almost 9months old, he woke up today and his eye was mattered. I cleaned it out and it started getting worse with this yellowish yucky stuff. I took him to the doctor and he never exactly said what it was. He hinted that it may be pink eye, the only thing is, is that his eye isnt actually pink nor red. It just has the discharge of yellowish stuff. He gave me eye drops that he has to have 4 times a day, 2drops in both eyes. If it doesnt get better by Wed. he is refering us to a specialist. Is there any one out there that can help me narrow down what it really is considering the doctor doesnt even know?

My little boy had a clogged tear duct and actually it was not fully developed. The eye Dr. had to put a tube in to help it fully develop and drain properly. Good luck I hope you can find out exactly what is going on soon.
Janet is right, the best cure is breast milk. My ped told me to put a drop in the corner of my sons eye at every feeding. It cleared up in no time. I used the same treatment when my second was a baby. It is amazing what all breast milk can cure!

i tought of pink eye right away/ did you know that it can spred like wil fire. be sure to wash you hand a lot. and anyone else that is around him just in case. good luck R.
Like the PP said , the eye tends to go pink if it is left for a few days before getting drops. The discharge you are describing sounds like the typical discharge you get with pink eye (also known as conjunctivitis).
it does sound like pink eye. My daughter had it and her eyes looked blood-shot, my son had it and it was a yellow/green discharge (much like what you describe) and real grotesque. Continue with the drops and it will clear up.
Hi A.,
Don't have any idea what it could be (pink eye is the obvious one), but just wanted to tell you that my son has had pink eye before with the symptoms you are describing. The antibiotic drops cleared it up so maybe it will be better by tomorrow!

Sounds like an infection, so I would stick with the antibiotic eye drops. I am going to guess your doc is trying to clear up the infection rather than focusing on exactly what it is to keep you and your son from enduring costly and invasive other medical tests.
It is probably pink eye. The other thing to do with clean hands take your pinkie finger and message his tear duct (in the very corner of his eye right up against his nose). My pedi says 50 strokes a day. This is to help keep the tear duct from becoming clogged. My oldest, who is now 7 had to have surgery to have his tear duct unclogged and had I known then that is all I needed to do. It wasn't a big deal having to have that done but it would have been nice to spend that money elsewhere. :)
Hi A.,
If you are breastfeeding, put a few drops of breastmilk in his eye throughout the day. You will notice improvements. My sister used breastmilk drops when she had pink eye and her eye was no longer itchy in the first day and cleared up by the second. I've used it when my daughter accidentally poked me in the eye with a corner of a picture frame. I thought for sure I would need to make a trip to the ER. I used some breast milk drops that night and by morning my eye was better. It's amazing!
Peace,
J.

My daughter has had pink eye twice. The very first time she only had the eye discharge and no redness. I am assuming the eye drops are an antibiotic eye drop. If so, and you use it for several day and his eyes do not clear up it could be allergies. However, if is extremely rare that a child with allergies will have discharge. Hope this has helped some.
Good Luck.
i had the same thing happen to my daughter about a month ago!! i freaked out and kept cleaning it..sometimes it got worse sometimes better..when i called her pediatrician they said it could be a clogged tear duct and to take ur pinky finger and gently massage the inner corner of the eye! it helped me and hers went right away! im sure you have hear this already but hope it helps :)
If hes sending you to a specialist its most likely for a clogged tear duck. they do surgery where they put a little stint in there so it can drain. my friends son had it done it was super easy hope this helps! I will say tho i would wait on the surgery some times they get clogged tear ducts and they clear up on their own (my daughter had this it lasted for about a week we just kept putting warm wash cloths on it for a few mins about 3-5 times a day
my daughter is 19 months and had yellowish crusty discharge for a while then developed a big bump under her eyelid on both eyes. I took her to the my eye doctor and they said that her meibomian glands were clogged under her eyelids. It is called chalazion. She got some eye drops and has to have warm compresses on her eyes twice a day. Good luck. Her eyes have been like that for about a month now and have not cleared up.
.
There is an eye virus that is going around down here in Tx. Its not pink eye, but is in the same family. I think you should call the doc and just ask if you have any questions. The virus we have where I am is matted eyes and yellowish nasty stuff, but the pink eye medicine doesnt help much. It goes away in a couple days and they used the drops just to make the eye look better, but again the drops didnt seem to help.
hello A.,
my now 8m.o. son had to be taken to an immediate care center when he was about three wks old for this same thing. we where told there that he had pink eye and since i have never had it i did not understand how a baby so young could get pink eye. the doctor there told me that its viral and b/c my older son was sick too then thats how he got it . A few wks later i took my younger son to his two month check up an my pediatric there told me that it most likely was not pink eye but rather that his tear duct in his eye was clogged and he told me the drops would not hurt him and may even clear the problem up. However in my case they didnt. so then he show me how to milk his tear duct twice a day to get the yellowish stuff out and he told me that if it did not clear up by the time he was one then they may look into surgical clearing it out for him. However my son's eye seems not to do the yucky discharge so much if i try to keep him inside so I belive it may also be a contributing factor of allergies.
to milk his duct just put you finger against his nose make sure you feel bone and as close to the tear duct where the yucky stuff is coming out and gently push down and out you should see more yellowish, white or even clear stuff come out and wipe it away with a damp towel. I see you live in ohio just watch it closely. H. this helps good luck
"Pinkeye" actually covers a range of problems, from viral infections to bacterial infections to allergies. It is not always contagious; it just means that the blood vessels in the eye are inflamed so the eye takes on a pinkish color instead of its normal white.
There may be something in the air (some sort of allergy to pollen? perhaps a reaction to crop-dusting? too much dirt in the air?) because my son had this last week. He's 4 y/o, and just out of the blue one day, he started getting that white gunk in his eyes, with his eyes looking slightly irritated, and an hour or two later, his eyes were definitely pink and there was a lot more matter. He also had a fever, although he had acted perfectly fine all day up until that point. He fell asleep and slept all night, waking up with perfectly clear eyes in the morning. Then as the day wore on, he got worse, but not as bad as the previous day. The next day he had a little gunk, and the next day he seemed fine.
I gave him extra vitamin C because I'd read somewhere that with pinkeye due to an allergy, vita-C can help. Who knows if it actually worked, or if it was just something that would have passed regardless.
The "pink" in pink eye (conjunctivitis) is usually caused by the irritation to the eye and the response of the microvasculature (veins) in the surrounding area to help heal the infection.
You definitely did the right thing by going to the pediatrician. I know it's hard right now, but put trust in your pediatrician that the drops (antibiotic) are in line with what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends as first line treatment. He'd have to culture to know for sure, and it's best to get started on the drops now. If the eye doesn't improve, you know it's not standard pink eye, and a trip to a specialist will be needed.
I have allergic reactions to my contacts that cause a pink eye like discharge. It's simply my eye's reacting to something they don't like and trying to protect them.
Here's what the American Academy of Pediatrics says about pink eye:
http://www.healthychildren.org/English/health-issues/cond...
If you choose to take the advice to massage the tear ducts, you will need to be really careful NOT to touch anything else and wash your hands immediately. Pink eye is highly contagious and is spread through direct contact.
It could also be blocked tear ducts. My newborn gets this all the time and if you notice that the eyes are really watery before the goop starts this is what it could be.
I need to massage the corner of the eye with my finger several times a day and this seems to keep the goop away. if I forget to do it for a week or so the goop comes back and I need the drops to help get rid of it.
