Goop in Baby's Eye

Hi there,
My neice is 9-weeks old. Just yesterday she started getting a little bit of goop coming from one of her eyes. She has not been exposed to pink eye and does not have a fever, but my Sister is concerned that it might be pink eye. Other ideas are just that she is congested and it's coming out at the tear duct (which my boys' pediatrician says can happen), or that it's just a normal occurence when a baby's tear ducts start working.
Has this happened to anyone else's baby or do you have any suggestions?
Thank you!!!
K.

See the doctor - there is a level of severity for clogged tear ducts in which the doctor would recommend breast milk, eye drops, eye cream etc. Plus, it could be something else.

This has happened to all three of my kids. It like a cold in the eye. The doctor gave us some drops that cleared it up in a few days.

My son had goop (greenish yellow) coming from one of his eyes for months.. till he was about 5mos. I used some erythromycin a couple of times, which clears it up.... but then it comes back. I believe he just had an immature clogged duct, like I did when I was a baby. (they did surgery on me 2x as a baby to open it, but nowadays they don't do surgery until later, and only if absolutely necessary).
I would massage the duct area, in the corner of the eye, every time you are feeding him... so you remember. It will keep it opening up a little and make it drain. (this is what we do in the NICU). If it still is goopy after a couple of days and is yellow/green, I would call you Dr and ask about some ointment (they usually use erythromycin... and she already had some at birth in her eyes-- perfectly safe and painless). Good luck!

Yes! My daughter had a clogged tear duct at that age. But, the pediatrician wanted to see her just to rule out infection.

Breast milk in the eye cleared it for my baby.

It can be pink eye or it may even be allergy related...the only real way to make sure would probably be to take him to his pediatrician:)

I bet it's just a clogged tear duct. It's pretty common in young babies. My second daughter had it in both eyes. they would water all the time and have a yellow goop coming out all the time. her doc. said it's pretty common and if it doesn't clear up by 6 months they will poke it to open it up. He said for me to just keep it clean and massage the duct in a circular motion every time i nursed her. I did this and by the time she was about 5 months they cleared up.

Also consider that gunk coming from the eye can be a sign of an ear infection. It was for my daughter. Hope not for this little one though!!

My daughter had the same thing. It was a clogged tear duct and I was advised to use a squirt of breast milk and massage the duct with a clean finger. It worked well.

My daughter had the same thing at about 2 months old also. I had called the doc and since no one in our house had had pink eye or other form, she wasn;t worried but said to keep an eye on it. Her eye was fine a week later at her next appt. The doc told me that it probably healed itself if it was in fact pink eye.

My first born had this and my doctor told me to squirt breast milk in her eye. Sounds a little gross but I swear it worked!

Sounds like a clogged tear duct. Use a warm rag and hold it on the eye then wipe from the outside corner into the center and down the side of the nose. Thats how the pedi said to do it. Its very common in babies! Dont worry about it unless her eyes become red or she starts to run fever.

If sister is breastfeeding, tell her she could put a couple drops of breast milk in her babies eye, a couple times a day. I know it sounds kind of weird...but it does wonders for diaper rash and eye infections. It's magic stuff.

edit: as to what it is, I don't know. I know my kids had some eye/skin stuff when they were newborns and my pediatrician said it was normal. I always call my pediatrician's nurse line when I'm not sure if I should bring one of my girls in.
