Your Best Tip for Potty Training a Boy

We are potty training my two year old son and I was wondering if you could share your best tip or the thing that was the most helpful to you during this process.

A little about what we are doing... we have him in training pants with vinyl pants over them and send him to potty several times each hour. He sits on the potty with his willie pointed down. Daddy goes with him most of the time. His sister has always been resistant to stop playing to potty (although she never has accidents) and he repeats what he hears her say: "I don't want to go potty."

What can I do next?

T., have patience. I have a 3 year-old son, who finally started pooping in the potty a few months back. I was at my wits end. He would do number 1, but would do number 2 in his underwear and pull-ups. He started going by himself right before he started Pre-K. I kept telling him that he needed to poop in the potty so he could go to school. My best tip would be to use something he enjoys to encourage him and praise him as he gets closer and closer to being fully trained. I don't think there's anything that can rush it along. The lightbulb will go off and poof...he's trained.

I was about the give up training my son (husband was at sea) but .... my father-in-law took him into the bathroom and showed him how to pee, standing up. I am of two minds about standing versus sitting -- standing is how most men go to the bathroom; however, sitting means you won't be cleaning the wall behind the toilet when they miss.

My son was super easy (which i know is unusual for boys) It literally happened overnight. Anytime daddy or bubba had to potty --we were right there watching and cheering them on (my husband maybe liked that a little too much) Also, we just went straight to big boy underwear.. and when he had an accident, he was WET. Any time I would put him in pullups --he'd pee in them as if they were a diaper. The actual cloth underwear is what did it for us. And when he was ready.. there was no turning back.

Good luck! And be patient! When he's ready, you will know!

We potty trained my 2 year old little boy over 4th of July weekend. He woke up that morning and I told him that he was going to be a big boy now and not wear BABY diapers anymore. He was so excited. I told him that it was his responsibility to tell me when he had to potty and if he had an accident HE had to clean it up. The first two hours he had 4 accidents. He thought it was fun cleaning it up the first 2 times, then it wasn't fun anymore. I never punished him or spanked him for wetting his pants, I just handed him a paper towel and we cleaned it up together. On day two, we went to town and he didnt have an accident. He had a few accidents over the next few weeks, when he was playing and not paying attention, but after that he did great. At night we did put him in a pull up/diaper...but we told him they were "night night underwear" and that you can't pee pee in those. He did have accidents in those for a while, but, that's to be expected.

Just remember to stick to your plan...it might take a few days, but eventually they get the hang of it and it's sooooooo nice! Just dont give up!

Now pottying in public restrooms...that's not too fun! ;) GOOD LUCK! :)

When I was trying to potty train I was having alot of trouble also. I got a bubble gum machine and filled it up with mm's, then sat it in the bathroom by the toilet. Everytime he went potty he got a penny to get some mm's. We only had to do this for about a month then he was potty trained.

Although it may not be what you want to hear, I would wait altogether. 2 is pretty young for a boy, unless he is very close to three.

Otherwise, I have heard that cheerios in the toilet are helpful. He can use them as target practice, but of course he would have to stand up for that.

My son potty trained at 3 sitting down. We gave him 2 M&M candies for pee pee and 5 for poo. Good Luck!

reward him for having dry pants. every ten minutes check his underwear, if they are dry give him an m & m candie. I read this in "Potty training in less than 24 hrs" by Foxx and Azrin. While it took longer than 24 hours, it worked in about a week.

Boys are harder to get to do most things....lol Potty training is one of those things. We started our son potty training when he was 2, and he turned 3 in November and is still not trained. He goes with daddy every time daddy is in the bathroom, and is wearing pull-ups. He had pooped and peed on the potty, but not consistently. One of our main problems is him not wanting to stop playing to go potty, and he has had a little trouble with constipation, which makes him apprehensive of the potty since it made it hurt when he used the potty. He is really proud of himself when he does use the potty and I am trying to reinforce those feeling for him. I am also trying to get him to realize it is ok to get his potty dirty...lol His dudin (grandma) has that poor boy so scared of making a mess it makes me sick, so I tell him to make as big a mess as he wants when he is home....lol I guess what I am trying to say is, if you find the magic key, let me know, cause as far as I have figured out, just stay patient and consistent and it will eventually happen.

The best piece of advice I ever had for potty training my son is to wait until he is dry through the night to start training him. Once he was consistently waking up with dry diapers through the night, we put him in big boy underwear and never looked back. One thing the helped was using character underwear in his favorite charcter, Thomas the Tank Engine, and talked to him about how Thomas doesn't like to get wet. I can count the number of accidents he's had on one hand and he's only wet the bed once.

T.,

I have a son that will be 6 in a two days. I too put him in the training pants with the vinyl pants over them when he was training. They worked well for me. I also had him face backwards on the toilet while pottying. This made an easier transition to standing up to go. I also put a Cheerio in the water and told him to sink them. That worked instantly. When he did go we sang a song and clapped. He seemed to like that part. Please continue to be a blessing to your family. God made you a mother for a reason; to bless your little ones lives constantly.
