Help: Potty Training Issues for 3 Year Old!

My son is 3 1/2 years and is still not potty trained. He does not show any interest in learning; in fact, he is actively resistant to it! Back in August, he started practicing, and things seemed to be going well. He was still having trouble knowing when he was going to urinate, but he was willing to try. But in September, he suddenly stopped wanting to try. He wouldn't even wear his underwear over his diaper. I didn't push him because I thought it was a temporary setback and that we would pick up again soon. Well, it is now mid-October, and no luck!!! When I ask him to use the potty, he panics and gets very stressed out. If I am insistent and place him on the potty he holds his urine and then jumps off and pees on the floor. I have tried various rewards--but even chocolate (his favorite) will not bring him around. He could care less that all of his friends already know how to use the potty.

Should I continue to wait for him to come around? I am afraid that if I push him too hard, I will just make things worse. I am especially worried because he is at an age when he must be potty-trained to attend various activities and preschool.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

My son didn't start trainging until 3 1/2... he went through the same type of things. Then he didn't want to try because he was afraid of the dark bathroom. So i placed the training potty in the kitchen. Just be calm and patient. You will need to just make a decision that you will do this!

I was told by his daycare to start bringing him in underwear because they had 10 kids in the class, no younger kids could move into the class until 1 of the 10 were fully trained and could move up....

I picked a long 3 day weekend, stocked up on food, M&Ms in a cute container as a reward and carpet cleaner and we just stayed home. He ran around in a t-shirt and undies. By the 3rd day he was peeing in the potty. It was a start and I felt okay sending him to daycare like that.

The thing that helped my daughter was a DVD called 'Potty Power' about a little girl princess who needed to learn. They may have one geared towards boys.

My son learned to pee standing up. Maybe try it that way. We put our kids in underwear when they were ready to be potty trained. No diapers or pull-ups. I would tell him you are going to the store to buy some big boy underwear, put him in the underwear and don't turn back. He's going to have a lot of accidents but he'll get it. Remind him every hour to go to the potty.

Going number two was the hardest part for my kids. My son would beg me to put him in a pull up when he had to poop. I would sit in the bathroom with him and hold his hand as he was trying to go. There's something about pooping that is much scarier than peeing when they are potty training. Maybe b/c they can feel it leave their body?

If things were going well at one point, it sounds like he knows what to do. He's just being lazy about it like my kids were. Sounds like he's ready to be a big boy.

Hello,
My son was potty trained at 3 1/2 years old. He was going to school in September and I wanted him to go on his own. I took away the pull-ups and I purchased toddler underwear of his favorite cartoon character. He loved Elmo, so I told him do not pee or poop on Elmo. I sent him to preschool and they said I thought you said he wasn't potty train? I was shocked that it worked! Also at his school, they had a schedule on potty breaks which helps also. He was determined not to mess up Elmo. Also he watched Elmo's potty-time dvd. Much success.

Take away the pull-ups and diapers. He will use the potty soon enough.

I highly recommend the e-book by Lora Jensen at www.3daypottytraining.com. My daughter was going consistently within 3 days. We still had the occasional accident for a while but they got less and less. It is a cold turkey, no diapers or pull ups ever again (even at night) method. I loved it! Good luck to you both.

I was lucky enough to have my son in Kindercare when he was just 3 - he was interested, but not yet trained. I was TOTALLY intimidated by the process. He saw me and his daddy potty, so he "got it" and he was interested, but I was at a loss as to if he was really ready and how to actually help him do it. He learned there! There were some accidents, but they told me when he was ready to wear pull-ups instead of diapers to learn how to pull his pants up/down by himself. Then when he was ready to wear underwear. There was also an aspect of positive "peer pressure" - seeing the little ones in their underware, and bigger kids pottying by themselves, etc. was helpful for him. It was GREAT and so helpful.

I don't know if you can do something like this, but you may want to check with a place like kindercare to see if they can help, or if they know someone who can. If I remember correctly, someone told me that some parents actually had them go to a daycare place like that so they could get potty trained cause they know how to get it done.

Good luck!

I started potty training my son at age 3, but standing up. Can you try that? Has he seen your hubs go pee? That’s what we did. I had hubs take him into the bathroom so he could watch Dad go and of course he wanted to be just like Daddy. Kids do great learning by example.

Also I bought him the book “Once Upon a Potty”. He really liked it. In fact it was because of that book that I was able to get my son to poo in the toilet as well. It’s illustrated in the book where poo comes out and I know it scared my son as to “where” it was coming from in his body. Once he read the book it clicked and he just said “Oh is THAT where my poo poo comes out”. Then he went.

Oh and we went cold turkey with the potty training. The day we started we never went back to diapers except at nite we still put him in pull ups. Within 2 months he was going all night waking up dry so away went the pull ups!

My son is turning 3 in November - and can go potty, but won't poop in toilet. He doesn't tell me he has to go, rather if I ask him, he'll go. I don't know how to get him into the habit of wanting to go. I like the other person's suggestion about the pull-up's - maybe if we make it their thing - they'll want to do it?? My Grandmother said, put him in underwear - and let him pee himself. keep him in the underwear for 10 minutes, long enough that he hates it - which will teach him how to start using the toilet. seems harsh - but I bet, in her day, it worked.

It's hard!!!

Basically, I have no solutions for you, just letting you know I feel for ya.

Hang in there!

I higly recommend potty power!!! Thumbs up... I was showing it to my daughter like twice a day every day..my son (older than her) memorized all the songs and was singing outside the bathroom as she was trying to go potty it worked wonderfully..she was almost there in a week..and by the second week she was out of diapers completely I didn't even need pull ups.
keep him diaper free for long hours. When he pees tell him how nasty it is..be a little strict about it that it shouldn't happen this way..
good luck!

If you are really desperate, you may want to try this: http://www.bootycampmom.com/

I haven't tried it myself, but I had it in my back pocket, in case my son resisted potty training. (At first my son wanted nothing to do with the potty, but I used the method described in Potty Training Boys the Easy Way -- Even if He's a Late Starter, and it worked. You can find it on Amazon.com.)
