If you want it done correctly and by a professional, then go to an upscale tattoo/piercing place.

The first time my daughter got her ears pierced was at Claire's. It was a disaster with non stop infections, etc. She was in 4th grade at the time. Then the 2nd time she tried it again, she was in 8th grade and went to Claire's and again.... bad experience.

After that, she went to a good tattoo/piercing place here in Dallas and has had ZERO issues.

Look into (reputable) tattoo/ piercing parlors.

They are held to much higher sanitation standards than commonly used piercing places. Plus, they use a needle that actually removes that teensy bit of "meat" in the hole, rather than just punching a hole through. Much less painful, less risk of infection, and faster healing.

Sometimes pediatric offices will do it for you. Maybe check with her doctor.

Places that use piercing guns aren't too horrible, but you never know what you are going to get... Often, the employees are just shown how to use the gun, given a quick lesson, and that's it. I have had good and bad experiences with them, but I like to err on get side of caution. :)

I took my daughter to Claire's. They draw a dot on each earlobe with a marker before piercing, so you can verify that the holes are matching. Then they have a girl on each side do them simultaneously. Make sure that happens, so you don't have the joy of them doing one, and then your dd not wanting them to do the other side!

Good luck!

Go to a piercer who does it with a needle. Stay away from the piercing guns at teh mall, or even your ped if that's what s/he uses.

Both my daughters got theirs done at Claires. It was just fine, no problems at all. Everything was sterilized, clean, they gave us cleaning solution and thorough instructions on how to use it. They were fast, efficient, and friendly. My younger daughter has a super high tolerance for pain so she had each ear done separately by one person. My older daughter is a total chicken, so they had two people do one ear each at the same time. Everything went very well.

I *have* heard stories of people who DID have problems with Claires (not at OUR Claires, but other ones in other areas of the country). So check into that...

Our pediatrician does it, does yours? Also Claires at the mall (if you have one there? I'm in California.)

I took my daughter to Piercing Panda in the mall. They sterilze their equipment, I watched them do it. She had hers pierced at 3 months and she is 7 years old now and her she hasn't had any problems with her ears. I had my ears pierced at a booth in the mall and I haven't had a problem with my ears either.
