Where to Find Other "Geeks"?

My roommates 13 year old daughter literally has no friends. I do mean 0. She is a tomboy and is not at all interested in the usual pre teen girl things. She loves Pokemon. She is very intelligent and loves animals. I want to find other girls like her, my Mom said she was the same way at this age. Does anyone know of clubs or activities where she would fit in?

What can I do next?

I wouldn't call her a geek, just reserved. My 12 year old nephew is still into pokemon and he has lots of friends. Maybe she just needs to get out more. Maybe she'd like to play softball. There is a softball league in Spring TX. just tell her to go to eteamz.com and look for NW45littleleague. They have a division just for girls! It's awesome. The games are packed full of parents that go see their games! It's a good way for her to make friends or maybe she'd like to try gymnastics. Also maybe your roommate could ask her if she'd like to take karate lessons. I took them when I was 14 myself and I loved it! I also made lots of friends in the Karate class. Or she could learn to play an instrument. There's lots of good options out there. Maybe theses will help her. Good luck!

My daughter went through something like that around the same age. I second the Youth Group thing. Also, she might want to join some clubs in school. Something she is interested in whether it be a sport or some other group. For instance, my daughter started playing tennis in her freshman year of H.S. and quickly made friends there. She also made friends in other classes and clubs. She made an effort, though which this young lady will need to do as well. As always, the absolute first thing she (and others who care about her) needs to do is pray. God cares about her and loves her very much. She should ask Him for a friend and He'll give her the best!!!!

How close to 14 is she? At 14 girls can join Venturing crews. Venture Scouting is a part of the BSA and I highly recommend it. The crews are run by the kids with adult advisors.

Hi D., how sweet of you to help your roommate. There are all kinds of 13 year old girls. Your roommate's daughter sounds a little like my daughter. She is a sporty-girl not really interested in girly girl things. I am letting her focus on sports, pets, reading anything she shows an interest in. One thing that might help is to help her find a church youth group. My daughter just joined the youth group at Northwoods Presbyterian Church (I see you are in Spring). There are girls and boys with lots of interests and just happens to have some "sporty-girls" (I prefer that to tom-boy description). Another suggestion is an after school computer club that plays to her interest in games and computers.
Best of luck!
