YAY I finally got a rental...and now I have to furnish an entire small cottage before 9/1 with little extra money...so what are your suggestions about finding furniture free or cheap? Ive been lookingg at craigslist and freecycle but nothing so far

correct I don't need to furnish it all but I would like to have some stuff in her room so she feels like she has a home...shes nervous on leaving her house which her dad will keep, and she will be at sat night-monday morning...when we got hit by a drunk driver all of her toys in the car were trashed so she thinks shes going to lose everything when we move...so I'd like to have her room somewhat done

What can I do next?

Love the answers so far.

Look at college towns right now. A lot of students are moving out and J. leave that stuff behind. It ends up in donation centers and for free on Craigslist. Also, people who live in these towns hold on to stuff to sell cheap this time of year for the in-bound kids.

Also put on Facebook that you are looking for specific items for free or cheap.

Do you have an Ikea near you???

Best of luck!!!

Congratulations! I hope you and your daughter are very happy there!

- Yard sales
- Estate sales
- Thrift stores
- Goodwill
- Target (dorm stuff is all on sale right now)

**You don't need to furnish the whole thing right now! You can get your "essentials" and then add to it as you live in the house. You may find that what you actually need in 2 months is very different than what you think you need!

Thrift stores. Take a drive on trash collection days--amazing what people toss.
You don't need to furnish the entire thing by 9/1, right? You J. need to get what you need first.

I agree with ALL the answers before M., but put the word out to your friends too. You never know who was J. about to get rid of something that you could use..... even if it is temporarily.

Check Craigslist and go to garage sales! Often buying older furniture is actually healthier. Newer furniture from factory can emit fumes for many months that are bad for you and your family.

You can also put your own ad on Craiglsist looking for free furniture. Dont give any details, as you dont want wierdos to know it will be J. you and daughter. J. bare baiscs - family starting over, looking for free or very cheap furnishings. ALso, call your local MADD chapter. I bet they would be sympathetic to your plight.

Salvation Army has a store and I know if you go apply for aid, they give you a voucher to go over to the store and get so many pair of jeans and so many toys, and etc. So, if you go apply for aid, they will give you some furniture and maybe even help with utilities and food.

Ikea's furniture is reasonably priced but you will need to put things together. As far as toys, their toys are also reasonably priced.

I would get some key pieces like a bed and bedding. As for toys, only get a few treasured favorites. Wrap them up in a huge box and present them to her.

You may also consider a housewarming party. Your friends and family could come and bring thing for both of you. You could register at your favorite stores or make it J. about her and register her favorite things or things you really J. don't have the funds for.

You may also check out some local churches. My church has anything anyone would need and we raise funds or get special items for those in need.

Think outside the box and make it fun. Kids don't always need everything sometimes J. one key thing is the main thing they need.

Go around before garbage day and see what people have set out to be collected. We have acquired a very nice end table and a chest of drawers that way. They were in excellent condition!

Check with your local churches. They can help with things like this.

Contact the Salvation Army. If your income meets the standard for low income you may be able to get a voucher for free bedroom furniture from a thrift store.

Be careful shopping at furniture stores that offer great prices and only a 1 yr warrenty. Often that furniture is put together with particle board frames and it simply doesn't hold up. You are better off going to consignment shops and thrift stores and buying a few quality pieces used than a cheap piece new.

Keep posting on freecycle, it sounds like you need a lot of stuff, don't be afraid to ask.
