What Time Does Your 5 Year Old Go to Bed?

My daughter is almost 5 and lately has been having trouble falling asleep at night. I usually put her to bed between 8-8:30 but sometimes it takes her almost an hour to go to sleep. She might still be taking a short nap in school, and when she's home she doesn't nap and falls asleep right away at night. What time do you guys put your 5 year olds to bed? Thanks

What can I do next?

At that age, my goal was to make sure they went to bed early enough to wake up on their own. Now, I did not always succeed. There were mornings that I had to wake them up. But if they did wake up on their own, I knew they got enough sleep.

It was probably between 8:30 and 9:00. There were definitely nights that it took them an hour to fall asleep, but I never worried about that.

Mine did not nap at that age (at school or at home) so it was a little earlier for my older kids, probably more like 730-8 pm but they got up very early because we had an early start to the day.

My younger ones went around your time but also didn't nap.

I would juggle it a bit. If you find she is having a hard time sleeping at night, you can try a bit earlier or a bit later. Sometimes you need to catch that sweet time - where it's just right.

I was like Gidget. So long as they woke up on their own at right time in morning, I knew they were getting enough sleep. If I had to wake groggy children, and they were grumpy, then they needed more.

Sometimes mine got to read in bed if they didn't just fall asleep quickly. That was always an option (still is) at our house. This time of year it's hard for them to fall asleep some nights - light out.

She probably does not need to nap anymore.

When my daughter was 5, she went to bed around 8:30pm, but it would take her a long time to fall asleep, too, because she took a 1.5 hour to 2 hour nap during the day -- she just wasn't tired enough. She's almost 6 now and she goes to bed between 8:30-9:00pm. She does not take naps during the week and she falls asleep almost immediately.

Is this like Kindergarten school or day care school? If it's K then the nap issue will be solved very soon I would imagine. If it's like a day care or something, is it possible to request that she not nap?

When my kids were 5 they were in bed and asleep no later than 8 and on particularly busy days, it was sometimes 7:30. I would continue to put her to bed at that time and let her read books in her bed until she falls asleep. Even if she's not overly tired it will do her well to sit quietly and entertain herself.

At 5, I put mine into bed at 8:30, and allowed them to read to themselves until 9:00. Lights out at 9.

at 5 mine were usually in bed no later than 8:30, but then i'd read to them for a good half hour or so.

My son very rarely naps and bedtime usually falls between 7:30 and 8:30. It's 7:30 on super active days when he has school, gymnastics AND t-ball practice with a visit to the park. And by then he's usually asking for bed lol. That being said, he typically wakes up on his own around 5:30 am (no matter what time he goes to bed). On the days he will take a rare nap (if we're in the car for a long ride, etc), he won't fall asleep until 10 or 11 even though bedtime is still at 8:30 (and he still wakes up at 5:30 am the next day!).
