Do You Wake Your Kids up from Their Nap, or Just Let Them Sleep on Through?

I'm considering tweaking my kid's sleep schedule by moving back bedtime and decreasing the length of their naps. My kids are just shy of 3 and 4. Looking to hear what works for you and your family...

Thanks in Advance!

--You guys crack me up and have a point!
Their naps are really quite long...today they slept from 1:30pm to 3:50pm (!!!). They woke up at 8:20-9:00am (we're not morning birds), and went to bed (falling asleep is not immediate) at 10:00pm. That doesn't leave very much time for me to wind down and seems late...on the other hand, I love sleeping in so late and they ARE getting enough sleep. So maybe, everything's just fine and I need to just be grateful for nap time and a slow morning! You're awesome!

What can I do next?

HUH??? Wake a sleeping kid??? LOL

I never did that unless it was getting too close to dinnertime. It was best for us if the nap wrapped up by 3-ish.

If my gal is sleepin waking her up is like messing with a bear den! He'll she scares me! I don't have set sleep times but give it a try. That mid morning nap is most important imo. Let us know how it goes!

Oh gosh I LET them sleep through!
Of course!

They still go to bed just fine at bedtime, still.

I NEVER interrupt, my kids sleep or naps for anything.

My son, at growth-spurts, has been known to sleep at least 14 hours straight! I do.not.wake.him.
Not even for dinner.
I just check on him.
He is fine.
Then he wakes the next day, and I swear, he grew during his nap!

My kids are 4 and 8.
They nap.
They go to bed just fine, later.

My 2.25 year old wakes at 6:30, naps from 12:30-3:30, and goes to sleep at 6:45. So, 12 hours at night and about 3 during the day. My 5.5 year old will sleep from 6:45 at night until 6:30 in the morning, and takes a 2 hour nap 1-2 time/week, depending on out schedule. I wouldn't wake a kid from a nap - if they are sleeping, they probably need the sleep!

I usually allowed a 2.5 hour nap after my daughter turned 2. No longer than that tho, because I felt it gave her enough energy to buck bedtime. She's almost 6 y/o and on the nights I don't work the graveyard shift, we will take a nap from 3:30-5:30 then bedtime at 9pm and wake up at 7am for school. The nights I work she gets no nap but we are asleep before 8pm.

Yeah girl! Their naps are too long. Try and cut it down to an hour. Then maybe they'll go to sleep and hour earlier. My son is only 15 months. He wakes up around 830am. He's down for a nap btw 1230 and 1pm. I ley him wake up on his own, which is normally not longer than an hour and a half. He only takes one nap now. If he falls asleep past 2pm, I'll wake him after an hour. So by 830 or so, he in bed and sleep by 9.

Shortly after my daughter turned 3 we noticed that she was staying up until about 9pm every night even if we put her down as early as 8pm. In the afternoon she was sleeping for about 2-2.5 hours. When we cut out the nap she now sleeps from 7pm to 7am and goes to sleep within seconds. We thought she would be grumpy in the afternoon, but she amazingly wasn't. You probably should just try out some different times and see what works best for your schedule/kids/family. Good luck!

my daughter gets a 2 hour nap, and I wake her up if she starts to go over. A bit of crankiness (usually solved by an afternoon snack) is worth it to avoid the bedtime problems if she sleeps too long.

I could not handle it if my kids were up until 10 but that is just me. :)
I cut out naps completely once they started going to bed later than 8. They are 5 and 3--we have no naps and they pretty much sleep 7 to 7. Occasionally they even fall asleep at 6:30. Sometimes the three year old falls asleep during the day but even a half hour nap often means she's up until 9 or so. Do you what works best for your family! There is no right answer to this stuff. Good luck! :)
P.S. I DO wake sleeping kids. But that's cause mine wake up cranky either way and then are off the wall all night. What works for one kid might not work for the rest.

I would say tweak it if it isn't working for you - like if you want them to go to bed earlier or something.

My daugther rarely naps anymore, which is fine because she goes to sleep around 830pm and wakes about 730-8a. If she naps, she is up until 10pm or 11pm and still up at 730am - that isn't ok for me, nor is it enough sleep for her. So, if she does fall asleep, I wake her after 1 hour.

But if what is going on works for you, then don't change it. But if it isn't working and you need more "you" time at night, then definitely limit their nap.

I'd wake them after an hour. For me to survive my kids had to be in bed by 7:30 pm. They woke at 7am and this made my day work out for me. I could get up at 6 in the morning and read for an hour.
