Taking a Poll-what Time Does Your Toddler Go to Bed?

Hi Moms!
I'm running through the whole, "Is my child normal?" rhetoric and am asking for your quick participation in this (very informal) poll regarding sleep for toddlers/preschoolers. I am really only interested in information for ages 2-3. [However, please feel free to include information about your child when they were that age. ]

What is the age of your child?
What time do they go to bed?
What time do they wake up?
How long do they nap?
How many total hours per day do they sleep (nighttime and naps)?
Do you feel they get enough sleep?

Thanks for your input!!

So What Happened?

Thanks Mamas! Wow, I got a good response. Some of you wanted to know why I was asking...My son has never been much of a sleeper and lately he's been having major tantrums (rages almost) and we are trying to get him to sleep more. We used to start the bedtime routine around 8 (bath, stories, pats on the buns, etc.) and he'd fall asleep around 9, and wake up around 6:30. He'd nap anywhere from 1-3 hours, but his total hours was only averaging about 10-11. I do think he needs more. Now we are gradually bumping up his bedtime earlier. The past few days, we've got him to sleep by 8:15. But, now he's waking up before 6 a.m. Too early for me!! Based on all the responses I got, seems like most of you get your kiddos to bed around 7:30-8 and they are getting about 12 hours. So, we're working on it. Thanks so much for participating! Keep em coming, if you like!

My 3.5-yr old goes to sleep at 8:00, wakes anywhere between 6:30 and 7:30 and no longer naps. This means between 10.5 and 11.5 hrs of sleep. He seems to function fine on this unless we have an especially active day, at the end of which he tends to completely fall apart! Sometimes he naps in the car, but these are the exceptions. Good Luck!

My sons are 10, 3 and 21 months.
My youngest two go to bed at 7pm
The 3 year old wakes up around 7am unless someone (daycare children) wake him up and my 1 year old wakes up around 7:30am.
My 3 year old does not nap anymore in order to get him to go to sleep at night and my 1 year old naps for about an hour and a half.
3 year old sleeps almost 12 hours and 1 year old about 14 hours total
I feel like they are well rested when I stick to their routine and no one else wakes them up.

I have a 2 year old girl and a 3 year old girl. Both go to bed between 8 and 8:30 each night. The 3 year old wakes up at 7am and the 2 year old shortly thereafter. The 2 year old always takes a 2 1/2 to 3 hour nap a day from 12:30 to 3pm approx. The 3 year old will also nap, but for usually no more than 2 hours. She is to the point where won't always nap every day either.

My son is 2 and 4 months. He goes to bed at 10pm and wakes up at 8-8:30am. He naps just once during the day for 2-2.5 hours. So he gets about 12-12.5 hours of sleep a day. I definitely think he gets enough sleep because he is well-adjusted and a very bright and happy boy.
I know my son's time schedule is different from a lot of others (but I do know some others around the same schedule) but he does not go to daycare so there's no need for him to be up really early. And my husband and I love it for the weekends. ;)
I will probably in the future have to adjust it for school but for now it works perfect. Hope this helps! :)

29 months old
We start bedtime routine at 8:15...in bed by 9:00...asleep by 9:30 - 10:00
Will wake during the night...goes to our bed....sleeps 'til 9:00 (I wake with her until baby #2 comes in a matter of two weeks...then I'm back to no sleep.)
If she naps (about every other day) will go down between 2:00 - 3:00, will sleep for 2 - 2.5 hours.
Total time with nap: 13.5 hours Without nap: 11 hours
She gets the sleep she needs. I'd prefer her to nap every day. Maybe she will once we get outside to play each day. That has made a huge difference.

And, yes we look like the crazy parents out for dinner on late nights, too. This has also taught me to not overly judge other parents (like I used to). :)

You have to let us know why you asked the question. :)

My son will be 2 in May.
His schedule slightly changes during weekdays when he goes to daycare versus weekends, when he is at home. He naps longer at home, and I usually need to wake him up after 2- 2.5 hours, otherwise he has trouble falling asleep at night.
He goes to bed some time around 8.30-9 pm
Wakes up around 7 am (plus minus 1/2 hour)
Naps at 12.30-1 pm for 1.5-2 hours
He gets about 12 hours of sleep in total.
I think he is getting enough sleep. If he hasn't napped well at daycare (only 1 hour, for example) he goes to bed early (8 pm-ish) to make for the difference. If he had a long nap, he sometimes sleeps after 9 pm.

My daughter is 2.5, she goes to bed at 7:30, wakes up at 6:15-6:30, or 7am if we are lucky! She naps for on average 1.5 hours, she gets about 11.5-12 hours of sleep per day. I think she does get enough sleep. She gets grumpy like another other child in the evening, starting around 5:30, but she is also hungry and overstimulated by that time in the day.

My children are 4,6,and 1. My 4 and 6 year old, (as when they were 2-3), still go to bed at 7:30 (we start night routine at 7). They get time with books in bed until 8, and then are usually asleep by 8:30. Currently they wake up around 7:20 (for school), but they used to sleep until some time between 7:30 and 8.
They don't nap now, but used to sleep from about 2-3:30ish. I find that they fall asleep much quicker in the summers when they get more outside time (yet they also wake earlier due to the sun). I suggest good curtains and plently of outside time!
Total sleep at toddler age: about 12 . . . now : about 11. Yes I think they get enough sleep, though when we were giving up the nap, it took quite a while for them to not be grouchy in the evening followed by being too tired to fall asleep.

J is 40 months old yesterday. He stopped taking a nap at Thanksgiving, sucks big time for me, we try really hard to get him to go to sleep starting around 8:30 but he usually stays up until around 11pm. He sleeps on those late nights until about 9:30am. Somewtimes when we actually get him in bed and asleep at 8:30pm he is up and running around at 2am and stays up until 5-6 then back to bed. His mother did a lot of drugs while she was pregnant and we think this behavior may be a result of that. But we are retired so whatever schedule he needs is pretty much okay. Not that I think being up during the night is okay, that's not what I mean, but not going to bed by 8:30pm and getting up by 8:30am...he doesn't have to be on a "carved in stone" schedule that he would have to be on if we worked and he had to go to child care. We can be somewhat flexible.

And no I don't...uh...I mean, "he" doesn't get enough sleep...LOL.

Wakes up at 6:30-7am
Naps for around 2 hours (this varies depending on if he is at school or home)
Total sleep is around 13-14 hours
On the days he gets a shorter nap, he's generally tired earlier, but overall I think he gets plenty of sleep. He naps longer on the weekends to make up for lost time.

My daughter just turned 4
She goes to bed at 8pm
Wakes up around 7
Only naps about 3 days per week, but will sleep for 1.5-2 hours
Total sleep is 11-13 hours, depending on the day
I can tell when she is getting overtired and so can she...she will ask for a nap on those days. So, yes, she gets enough sleep

She sleeps about 14 hours a day
She only gets enough sleep when she sleeps AT LEAST 13 hours a day, preferably 14 or a bit more, but I know kids that don't get that much and are totally fine. She needs a lot of sleep or she doesn't feel well - I was the same way as a kid.

So on a "normal" day here are my answers:
What is the age of your child? 2 (just turned 2)

What time do they go to bed? 8:00 pm

What time do they wake up? Just recently it has become 6:30 or 7 but for a long time it was 7:30 or 8 - I am hoping we move back that direction but with it getting light out earlier that might be what wakes him up. I don't know.

How long do they nap? Naps are a wild card - he goes down from 1:30 to about 4:30. Often he sleeps for about 2.5 hours in there but not all days. He naps great if we have been out and active in the morning so he is tired. If he is not tired he can happily play in his bed for 3 hours and never fall asleep or not fall asleep until like 3:45 and then I have to wake him up at 4:30 so he will go to sleep at night.

How many total hours per day do they sleep (nighttime and naps)? 12 ish

Do you feel they get enough sleep? Unless he doesn't take a nap at all. otherwise yes.

My daughter will be 2 in one month.

She hits the crib anywhere between 7:30pm and 8pm.

She typically wakes at 8:47am (I swear, I could set an alarm by her morning waking).

She naps 1-2 hours, depending. I put her down for her nap from 1pm-3pm, typically.

I would say she pro'ly gets about 13-14 hours of sleep a day (she's growing like a WEED).

Enough sleep? OH YEAH. :)

Hi there,

My daughter is 2 1/2
She goes to bed by 7 most nights (rarely she will stay up late but it does happen every once in a while without a problem)
She wakes up between 7 :15 and 8:30
She goes down for a nap around 1 and usually sleeps for about an hour and forty five minutes, give or take.
She usually gets about 14 to 15 hours of sleep in a day
For the most part, she seems well rested. My kids act completely different when they are overtired! There are times when I wish she would take a bit longer nap but overall, I'm happy with her sleep.

I hope you get enough answers to help! Good luck! :)

My son sleeps ALOT.
He just turned 2 years old, and he goes to bed between 7:30 & 8pm. Sometimes it takes him a 1/2hr to settle down in the crib. (We are keeping him in the crib as long as possible/until it becomes unsafe so that he continues to have good sleep.) He wakes around 7am, and has a 3hr nap each afternoon. So, he gets a total of 13-14hrs of sleep each day. He has always been a great sleeper, and I think he gets enough - except for when his baby brother wakes him up at night. (It's rare, but they share a room, and my older son sleeps through it most of the time.)

My daughter sounds a lot like your son.

She's 2 (December birthday)
She goes to bed around 8, sometimes later but because she refuses to go to sleep, she often is up until 9 or 10. Fun, hey?
She wakes up at 7:30, almost like clockwork.
If she naps, which only happens about half the time, usually 2-3 hours.
Usually 10-13 hours. She's definitely best when she gets 11-12 hours total.

Yes and no, on the good sleep days, it's awesome. But it's a vicious circle and crappy sleep days often result in too much sleep days, which end up in a late bedtime (she'll be in her room but not going to sleep, not my fault people. :P )

My daughter is 2.5yrs and she goes to bed usually between 8-8:30pm with bedtime routine beginning with a bath at 7pm, then snack, then stories and bedtime. About 90% of the time she sleeps though the night and wakes at between 8-8:30am. She naps between 1-3 hours depending on the day, whether it's a car nap or a regular bed nap and how active she's been that day/week. Usually 1 or 2 days a week she does not take a nap for various reasons, on those days she goes to bed closer to 7:30 but still wakes around 8am. So I'd say averaged for a week she sleeps about 13-14 hours a day. Most nights she does wake a few times, whines for a few minutes then goes back to sleep, but that's normal for pretty much everyone. Overall I do feel like she gets enough sleep. Some days when she doesn't nap she gets strung out and cranky in the late afternoon and evening, but that's to be expected and the next morning she is her perky active self.

My daughter is 3.
She goes to bed somewhere between 8 and 9 pm.
She wakes usually between 7am and 730am.
She doesn't nap everyday anymore (boo hoo), but when she does, about 2 1/2 hours.
She gets about 11 to 13 hours of sleep a day.
I feel like she sleeps enough. With no nap, we are dealing with some issues on those days, but we are learning to get her to bed earlier, which is nice for us. I find that on the days where she has no nap, she sleeps much better at night - less waking up, etc.

My son just turned 4, but when he was 2 and 3 he:

went to bed at 7:30pm
Woke up at 6:00am
napped from 12:30-3:00pm

Total sleep 13 hours

In general I think that was enough sleep. Sometimes in the summer with very active physical days, he would fall asleep earlier or sleep in later which I thought was fine because clearly he needed a bit more on those days.

My son is 30 months old. He goes to bed around 10:30 or 11:00pm--he goes to bed late because his dad doesn't get home from work until 8:00pm or so. He gets up at 8:00-8:30am. He takes a nap around 2:30 to 5:00. So in total he gets maybe 11 or 12 hours of sleep. He seems fine. I did read that a toddler should get at least 11 straight hours of sleep at bed time but if we put my son to bed early--he would never see his daddy. So this works for us.

Well, I'll answer the questions for my younger SD (who is now four) and for my sister (much younger and lived with me until she was 3 and a half) who is now five.

At three, my sister went to bed at 7:30 and woke up at 6am. She napped for an hour and a half to two hours. So about twelve hours... At four, she started staying up later and now at five she only sleeps about ten hours total.

At three, my younger SD went to bed between 7pm and 8pm (depending on her attitude, how the day had gone etc) and woke up at 6 or 6:30am. She took at least a one hour nap, but sometimes would sleep for two hours. I never let her sleep longer than that at naptime.

Usually she falls asleep with in 10 mintues but soemtimes she chats to herself for up to an hour. she usually wakes up at 7, but sometimes at 6:30 which just makes my routine go south. If she isn't up by 7:15 we get her up. If she doesn't have daycare, she naps from 1-4ish give or take 30 minutes on either end. She definitly gets enough sleep :) If you are having a tough time, I recommend the book, healthy sleep habits, happy baby.

Haha. I just posted a question about this a couple weeks ago. My two and a half year old was going down for bed between 8-9pm, which I didn’t think was that late. SEVERAL mamas suggested we try an earlier bedtime, so we now start night time routine around 645-7pm and put both girls to bed by 730pm. This has made a dramatic improvement in our toddler’s alertness, activity during the day, crabbiness, etc. Now that she’s sleeping 10-11 hours at night plus a 1-2 hour afternoon nap, she is in a much better mood throughout the day!

my son is two and he has never been much of a sleeper. His bedtime is 7 which means he's usually asleep by 7:15 or 7:30. He has ALWAYS been an early riser. He get's up now around 5:30 on a rare occasion he'll sleep later (the latest it has ever been is 6:45). He was never much of a napper either. From 3 months up to a year I could only get him to take two twenty minute naps. I tried EVERYTHING and the only thing that worked was me napping with him every day for months before his nap finally extended to an hour. Which of course by this time he had dropped nap number two and was down to just 1 one hour nap a day. So he gets about 11 to 12 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period. Currently he only takes one half hour nap and when he wakes up he is like the excorist, nothing makes him happy and I know it's because he's still tired but trying to get him back to sleep just brings on the tanturms. Is it enough sleep overall? Some days it is and other days it's not (meaning he's cranky or fussy) but I've exhaused all tactics so I accept that some days are going to be more work than others.

What I have found with my daughter is that when she goes to bed later, she is up earlier and doesn't nap as well. She sleeps much better and functions better with an earlier bedtime.

I recently read an article in Parenting magazine about sleep. I hope I have remembered it accurately, but the author stated that if a child is tired, but continues to be awake, the brain secretes cortisol (I think) to keep the body going. Because the cortisol is still in their system during the night, the child will awaken earlier in the morning. It's a vicious cycle. Hope this helps!

kids at that age need about 14 hours of sleep for their growth and development.

My almost 24 month old goes to bed at 7 and wakes up around 8 and will nap at around 2pm for at least 2 hours.

It is very important that young children go to bed at a good time, between 6:30 and 7:30.

He did start having temper tantrums with nap time but he will remain in his bed (still in a crib for 2 more weeks) for the full two hours. He has now learned to entertain himself during that time and I take him out very happy.

Yes, most of the time.

My daughter started skipping naps around 2, going thru different phases, sometimes naps, then skipping naps, etc. What I found was if we stick to other routine times and have plenty of activity, then naps will be more consistent - both time going down and hrs of sleep.

My teenage stepson and husband get up really early and would wake up the little ones if I don't have some sort of white noise going on in their rooms.

How many total hours per day do they sleep (nighttime and naps)? 12 1/2 apx
Do you feel they get enough sleep? yes

I wish to add about my 5 year old as she is unique:
What is the age of your child? 5
What time do they go to bed? 8:00pm (but sometimes stays awake in bed till after 9:30!)
What time do they wake up? between 6-6:30 (maybe has slept past seven 5 or 6 times in her life)
How long do they nap? during the week about 1.5 at the most, weekends we dont make her nap, only rest (this has only been in the last 6 months though).
How many total hours per day do they sleep (nighttime and naps)? 9-11 apx
Do you feel they get enough sleep? She doesnt get enough by normal standards, but I think she just needs less sleep than others. All the genius people need very little sleep, so there is hope, right?! :)

However my now 5 yr old daughter has always required much less sleep than my son. She has never been a big sleeper. When she was 2-3 she was sleeping an average of 9 to 11 hours a day and seemed just fine most days. We tried the same routines with her, tried moving bedtime up and she did just the same as your little one... earlier to bed = earlier to wake. She fought naps at times. Some times she would lie awake in her bed for an hour or two after being put in bed singing or talking to herself. On days that she seemed cranky or would break down & have tantrums.... she got "quiet time" in her room, whether she slept or not. When she was 3 she tried to tell me she didn't need naps. The very next day she had a bad day & threw a good tantrum. She's a very smart girl so I "negotiated" with her. Told her that she didn't have to nap, but she had to have quiet time in her room for atleast an hour.... AND that it couldn't be renegotiated again until she was 4! It worked, some days she napped, some days she lays in her room and reads, or signs, etc. She still does this and turned 5 a couple months ago. I truly believe some kids just don't require the "normal" amount of sleep, but a little quiet time helps them relax, as well as gives mommy a little time too! :)
